Angry mom hacks school's system, changes kid's grade
Catherine Venusto of Pennsylvania has been charged with hacking into the computer system of the Northwestern Lehigh School District and changing the grades of her two children.

Venusto formerly worked as an administrative office secretary from 2008 through April, 2011 and was familiar with the system.

Before quitting, she was accused of changing one of her daughter's failing grades to a "medical exception." In 2012, the woman was accused of changing her son's grade of 98 to 99.

Venusto has now been charged with 6 felonies, three counts of unlawful use of a computer and three counts of computer trespassing and altering data.

Although there is little chance it will get that far, Venusto is facing 42 years in prison and a $90,000 fine.

think its completely rediculous that she facing 42 years in prison.

I blame the movie industry for giving her the idea to do this.
Wargames - you have a lot to answer for. Tut tut
She should sue the MPAA for contributing to the crime.

There is a source. Don't be so edited by ddp lazy next time Andre Yoskowitz.

That's extremely rude. You can do a simple Google search to find the source, you really don't need him to link to every single off-site news article.

You'll find that Afterdawn rarely includes sources, as anyone with an IQ over 50 can find the same stories on other news sites by Googling the context of the article.

The word hacking has been degraded. example... If I take a file from my job's computer to offer it to someone else, thats called hacking? Since I did not do any special coding, script, etc. I think it should just be called stilling.

This lady just had access to it. She did not hack it. She "was familiar with the system".

I agree with most of it, except the part where we could/should call it stilling...in this case, why not call it "freezing"?:)

This lady is a pure moron in any sense of the term. Why bother to change one grade from a 98 to a 99? Was there that much of a flat line on the bell curve that the little turd fetcher was going to fail? Seems to me the kid was doing fine.

What this mom needs is a diesel powered vibrator & a dose of life other than her kids. Go sip wine & gossip with the other twats at a book club or boil/baste at a hot tub at the local spa, but let the kids be. Be a parent, by all means, but this ling vicariously through them like they're a second skin is so creepy we're going to hear that she pulled a Buffalo Bob next.

42 years just for hacking a school computer ? that's insane. Murderers here in Ireland only get 8 to 12 years in prison and if she done that hacking here she would only have got a fine. The justice system in america is insane imo.

I wonder what the charge for farting in public is ? 1-2 years in prison ?.

people commonly comfuse hacking with accessing.
apparently the number of prison immates in america is rediculous.based on what ive seen on the internet america likes imprisoning people.

as for the poster of the article from what ive seen most the info comes from internet articles they dont personally go out and do research.

A man can kill somebody and get less time than this woman who changed a damn grade on a computer. Now I'm not defending this woman by any means, and I understand that parents will do anything for their kids, but to hack a computer system is extreme, but the amount of jail time is completely useless and unecessary IMO. Maybe 5 years but not 42 years.

Yeah I do think the sentence is insane though I'd think they would plea it down to a few counts in the end. Sad thing is the school probably never removed her account or had a generic account they all used they couldn't be bothered to change the password on. Hate to call that hacking cause frankly she doesn't sound that smart...

    Just my $0.02,

Because Jail will do what other than rob this woman of 5 years of her life and put her kid at a greater risk of becoming a serial killer..? Why are people so stupid?
