Jury awards Apple $120 million in Samsung patent infringement case

Jury awards Apple $120 million in Samsung patent infringement case
Earlier this week, a federal jury ruled in favor of Apple in its ongoing patent war against rival Samsung.

Samsung infringed on two patents, ruled the jury, and Apple was awarded almost $120 million in damages, a fraction of the total $2.2 billion it had demanded.

On the other side, Apple was also found to have infringed on a Samsung patent, and Samsung was awarded $158,400.

The ruling follows Apple's victory in 2012 where it was awarded $1 billion in damages from a few more serious patent violations.

"Today's ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: that Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products," Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said at the time. Among the software, code and patents that Samsung allegedly stole were related to word correction, slide to unlock, quick links, background syncing and universal search.

And it's this bs reward system that makes has the world laugh at US courts. Seriously it's not okay to infringe either way, but 120 million for 2 Apple infringements and $158,000+ to Samsung for 1. Yeah... okay... cause that makes sense...

I get protecting your own country's business, but that is honestly full of... It's no wonder Samsung products continue to be over-priced over here in the West.

Why doesn't Samsung put some hurt into Apple by not selling them components like the processors used in their products?

If you don't want an iThing then don't buy an iThing. But I don't think that samsung or any of the other phone makers are any better. Do I wish that my iPhone had an SD slot for added storage.... Of course I do.... But I knew this going in and still chose this phone. I don't need a phone that is "unlockable" or " hackable" to be happy with my purchase. I use my phone for email, text, phone(duh), looking up scores, and a few other functions.... And I haven't for anything that I wish I could do and couldn't so if I'm a "sheeple" then I'm happy to be one.

After reading so many of these kind of articles for so many years, I'd venture to say (I by no means am claiming to know law) that refusing to sell / license a specific item to one company yet offer it to their direct competitors could be grounds for a law suit.

Someone speak up if you know this to be true or not.

i think samsung should sue the courts for discrimination, an american company gets millions in damages does same thing to asian company and they get $158000, racist much.

I think the whole lawsuits/patent war is rediculous but if apple does infringe on a samsung patent and samsung infringes on an apple patent and it goes to court they should get the same amount of money from each other.

Not trying to defend either company or the courts, but you can't call this discrimination. The fine is based on the level/value of infringement, not on the number of times.

It's like you get caught for assault twice, and I get caught for shoplifting once. My fine is not going to be just half of yours.

But like I said, not trying to defend anyone here, I think the whole patent infringement law is a mess in general.

Yes. Additionally, I believe it was in Britain that crApple thumbed their noses at the British courts when they posted their court ordered (non)apology on a page you could only get to by jumping through hoops (read links).
