Sony sold 1 million VR headsets
Sony has sold more than one million PlayStation VR headsets, according to an executive.

Atsushi Morita, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, admitted that the sales figures so far have exceeded the firm's expectations.

PlayStation V4 can rely on a base of 50 million PS4 consoles sold so far, and also a much lower price point than its main competitors in the virtual reality space.

Sony's VR headset sells for $399, compared to Oculus Rift at $599 and HTC's Vive at $799.

"I believe that VR technology is the greatest innovation since the birth of television," said Morita. "VR allows you to travel to World Heritage Sites or to space while staying at home. It's like a time machine or a door to anywhere."

And that's a million disappointed people that wasted 400 bucks.

VR is not going to take off as touted a couple years ago IMO.

It's already lost its luster. The notion of companies making "affordable 300 dollars VR HMDs" is not gonna sway a great majority of consumers. Oculus has failed with it's non-HD in each eye, way expensive device with few practical applications.

Vive is even worse and a significant increase in price and the same defunct functionality with few practical apps.

SOny probably sold a boat load to those that thought it was great but then put the headsets down and haven't used since. I'm guessing mom and dad often bought these at the kid's request for Xmas or birthdays, etc.

I love VR.......would love to use it but not at the expense of quality.

Yeah man, totally agree. especially about the lack of HD. And this is why I had not jumped the gun to get one. I have confidence that someone will perfect this. Let's hope soon.

In spite of the lack of resolution and games, the biggest issue with the Sony unit is being tied to the PS4. Even the pro is nowhere close to being capable of doing a good job with VR.

I do think that VR will come of age soon...we nearly have GPUs capable of it, and if someone actually wanted to make a good headset they could. Then maybe 2-3 years after that it would be close enough to mainstream to have decent software support. Of course by then the only people who will want one of these units will be those creating collections that also feature the virtual boy.
