MSI to launch CD-ROM and CD-RW products

A well known motherboard manufacturer MSI (Micro-Star International) is about to take a very late entry to the optical storage market.

In addition, MSI plans initial production of CD-ROM and CD-RW drives to start in May at its Baoan, Shenzhen (Guangdong Province, China) factory. This is not MSI’s first attempt to enter the optical storage drive business. In 2001, the company invested NT$208 million for a 59.93% stake in Taiwanese optical storage drive maker Accesstek.

Even though MSI is a well recognized brand in the PC industry, it seems very unlikely that they would be able to capture any significant share of the CD-ROM/RW market. The market already has very tough competition going on, after all the Compact Disc technology is coming to it's dawn since the DVD recordable drives are getting more and more appealing to the consumers.
