According to ZDNet, RIAA's website, RIAA.org, was disabled by a massive DoS (Denial Of Service) attack for four days. Attacks started on Friday last week and ended yesterday.
Attacks started shortly after RIAA encodersed a bill written by House representative Berman on Thursday, that would allow copyright owners to use force to distrupt file swapping in P2P networks. The RIAA said it would not speculate about the reason for the attack.
In DoS attacks, attackers normally "capture" hundreds or thousands of computers and use those computers simultaneously to attack specific site by sending bogus data and requests for the server.

Just an additional comment: maybe now RIAA gets a slight idea how it can feel when you get DoS'd (as they're hoping to get the rights to do the same to P2P users).

At least from London, the connection to RIAA.org doesn't work. So, my guess is that other h4x0rs read the news and were encouraged to jump the bandwagon and started their own attacks against RIAA.org :-)

It's refreshing to see the business end of the enema bag inserted where it really needs to be, the asshole (read RIAA).
Of course the BSA and the movie producers should be next, the more these assholes get cleaned, the better off we'll all be.
Maybe a rethinking of their pricing schemes could put an end to the need for "backup copies".a double-tap for the BSA, RIAA, Hollywood, etc.
