This is so far the best approach I've seen to get people back to buying CDs. Even if a user downloads the complete album off the web, they will at least know what the artist's music is like and may encourage the user to purchase the ablum to access these web resources and competitions as well as obtaining CD quality tracks.
So far, every other approach I've seen such as Suing, copy protection, blocking sites, etc. is simply encouraging users find a different source of entertainment. I.e. who wants to buy a CD that's crippled with copy protection and they don't know what most of the tracks sound like?

Gorillaz album had a similar implementation, with the CD you got access to closed content on their site.

Well it is about time that the record companies got smart. I would buy a good CD once and awhile especially if I had exclusive access to a web site ware I can listen or watch unreleased videos or hear unrealeased tracks.
If I Download a new CD and like it, I would be impulsed to buy the actual CD so I can get the extras.
I think the mainstream tech world is teaching both the RIAA and record labels that we aren't going to stand for such bulley tactics in the first place.
