Cirrus Logic adds DivX support for its DVD chips
Cirrus Logic has licensed the DivX technology from DivXNetworks to use the MPEG-4 codec in its low-end DVD decoding chips.

Cirrus Logic hopes to capitalize by the move which would allow DVD-Video discs to be made with MPEG-4 instead of MPEG-2 that's used in DVD-Video standard. MPEG-4 would allow more content to be squeezed on same space as MPEG-2 with same quality.

Company also has plans to add Windows Media 9 support to its decoding chips soon. First DVD players using the new DivX-capable chip are expected by early 2003.

Cirrus Logic tried to fight against chip manufacturing giant, MediaTek, who currently holds appx. 50 percent of the DVD player chip markets. Cirrus Logic has a market share of appx. 5 percent of global DVD decoding chip markets.
