MP3 pirate pleads guilty

MP3 pirate pleads guilty
The leader of MP3 piracy group Apocalypse Production Crew (APC), Mark Shumaker, 21, has pleaded guilty to violating copyright laws. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and US$250,000 fine.

This is the first time an online-focudes piracy group is being charged in federal criminal prosecution. The final sentence is to be decided November 7th in Easrtern District of Virginia.

The plea was, obviously, welcomed by Recording Industry Association of America who has long urged the Justice Department to focus on online music piracy, just like they focus on software piracy.

Copyright holders and anti-piracy groups claim MP3 groups, who release bootleg copies of yet un-released music, do so to for money, when in fact many groups just compete to be the first one to release a particular album. It doesn't, of course, make it any less illegal.

    hey ash STFU...the movie and music indusry has raked consumers over the financial coals for years, so I dont feel one ounce of sadness for the artist/record companies/labels who loose thousands over pirated music.

    ok for you ashlvsya i bet you have a burner on your computer or have burned something before. think about it....maybe instead of going after the groups of people with the illegal music and movies they should stop companys from making burners. no burners equals no piracy! wtf is up with that?? im not saying that i want this to happen but i believe the makers of the cd burners should be targeted as well

    ashlvsya, your little one sided view of piracy is disturbing, You've got to look at the whole picture. first off Why the piracy??!! second, what is the music industry doing to help it instead of provoke it? what this proves is that the music industry (and the music you hold so dear) needs a reform. They are behined in the times and the people prefer a new format, and new way to get thier music. At first people paid hourly for internet, now it's a subscription basis. same with music. This reminds me about the Microsoft monopoly complaints. I mean, people back in the early 90s wanted somthing that was compadible, so that all thier computers could work with the same software. So microsoft dishes out an easy to use operating system that ends up on more than half of all computers (compadability) and then people complain. HOrse shit to me.

    hey how about the fact they relieased music that wasnt even out for the public yet maybe they should learn to look at themselves for an inside leak... and all those movies that get copied in the theathers or pre releases hey their the guilty parties not the peps who end up with it... the music and movie industry in this country have let all of us down for years .... lets just mention Milly Vanilly and watch them cring... or the fact that the Kazza virus was released in Germany under the file name of Metalica Black while they were on tour in Germany .... how about we boycot the lables supporting the crack down...

    Thanks for the support.

    If you tranfere over P2P a least some has bought it and the ripped it, maybe a few people hav bought it. Take my brother for instance he never buys copies only the real McCoy, he shares it on the net still but a least the record company hav sum money to produce the next thing.

    If piracy increases then arstist an record labels will go to the next level, which might invole a abolishment of cds (i'm talkin a bit it to the future) an might produce all their music on those discs that the PSP is bringin out etc.

    @mystic

    Yeah go on boycott the labels if you can get enough support then mayb it'll work the record labels will stop couter striken at ppl, Metallica mite even lose their contract no more Mettalica music, then fans will realise what they have done.

    The only solution to piracy is to lower the prices of Cds,DVDs and videos, until the record and dvd label ppl get this into their thick skulls then they are goin to go under.

    no more Mettalica music If there future CDs are going to be anything like their latest St. Anger then I don't care if there ever is anymore Metalica music because St. Anger SUCKS compared to what they are capable of.

    ashlvsya, you are a moron. I was being sarcastic. What do you think you're doing on the P2P network. Same thing that people who put the music out. Ever heard of theft by receiving? Piracy will never put an end to any band not even whiny ass metallica because there will always be money to be made so there will always be jerk offs who have no other way to make money than by being creative. Besides the ones who make the bulk of the money are the recording companies (sony, bmi, arista, etc) because they front the money to make the records. If you're going to respond make sure it is well thought out, don't type the first stupid thing that comes to your head....
