Go retro with Verbatim "movie reel" DVD-R/+R

They already have the Vinyl CD-R in their product line and now Verbatim introduces recordable DVD media with the looks of a movie reel. Powered by high quality Mitsubishi azo dye and backed by a lifetime warranty, these make an attractive offer for a movie collector. But unfortunately the design, as always, comes with a price tag.

Verbatim DigitalMovie 4x DVD+R and DVD-R discs are based on MKM's Metal Azo recording dye technology which produces recordings with greater power margin and better sensitivity than earlier-generation 2x DVD recordable discs, ensuring the same accuracy achieved by other discs at 1-2.4x recording speeds. DigitalMovie DVD media are manufactured utilizing Ultra-Precise Molding(TM) (UPM(TM)) technology which produces very flat discs, guaranteeing stable, high-speed rotation during the reading and writing processes.

Pricing, Availability

Well, Verbatim do make good products, but yeah, this is just a case of using pretty eye-candy to squeeze out a little (lot) of extra profit from a medium which is currently experiencing huge price drops everywhere. If/when dual-layer dvd and/or blue laser become the norm, they'll almost be giving (reg'lar) dvds away.

But the Verbatims are very pretty aren't they? I bet stuff like this gets the MPAA all in a stink-fit.

When you put a disc into your player, do you really care what the label looks like as you watch the movie, or are you just happy to have a good quality disc that only cost you a buck?

BTW, that Verbatim promo pic I just viewed is probably the biggest one I ever looked at over my slow lil' dial-up modem (2,030,552 bytes; 1505x2101 pixels <7-1/2"x10-1/2">; 200 dpi). WoW! No wonder the discs look neat!

(Think I'll stick to my cheap yet perfectly-functional 50-unit bulk packs though).

BTW, the supplied BusinessWire link (above) doesn't seem to work, Lasse. I get a "Forbidden - You do not have permission to access ..." error message. (???)
