MPAA: No screeners for other than Academy members

MPAA: No screeners for other than Academy members
MPAA announced today that its plan to ban screener (meaning DVD or VHS copies of movies that haven't been released on DVD/VHS yet and are sent out to movie industry people, critics, etc) tapes and DVDs stands. Only exception will be the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, i.e. the institution that hands out annual Academy Awards a.k.a. Oscars.

MPAA came under pressure to relax its screener ban decision it made in September after it negotiated a separate deal with Academy in October that granted Academy members an access to screeners. Many independent production houses wanted to include Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which hands out Golden Globe awards) and other institutions that have movie industry awards to the same deal MPAA made with the Academy. But now MPAA announced that it has made up its mind -- the only people who can get their hands on movie screeners are the Academy members.

"The HFPA is extremely disappointed that the MPAA has unfairly decided to continue the screener ban on organizations outside of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said.

MPAA claims that the screener ban is implemented because of movie piracy. Many smaller production companies claim that the real purpose is to get the award voters to see only the big budget movies that are running in their local movie theatres and to get rid of small-scale productions in awards shows.

Basically critics and various movie industry associations object the ban because by associating the screener ban with fight against the movie piracy, MPAA is pretty clearly stating that critics, actors, etc who get the screeners are possible movie pirates that shouldn't be given something as valuable as a good-quality DVD copy of the movie thats going to hit the small screen only after two to three month wait.

This smells like the RIAA move of killing any online sites that promote indie artists under the guise of eliminating piracy. I know that there are other reasons as well the RIAA is doing this, the root of this movement of course is to make more money for its members (hence itself). Greedy is the term that comes to mind.

I find it hilarious that they are scrambling the way they are. There has always been piracy and always will be. There will always be leaked copies. I hope they figure that out and quit wasting their time (and money)on trying to stop it.

Welcome to the digital revolution! I likee.

This fight against piracy is going a bit too far, this being a good example.

Maybe they should stop making movies. THAT would really stop movie piracy.

These are the same companies that are selling things like DVDs of "Gone with the Wind" for $20 ($70 for the "limited" edition boxed set!) SIXTY-FOUR YEARS after it was released. And I'm supposed to feel sorry for them 'cuz they are SUPPOSEDLY (very debatable) loosing a few bucks on pirated copies of "The Hulk". Cry me a friggin' river.

Help me out here. Take a look at these numbers and see if YOU can figure out what these A-holes (MPAA) are whining about. I can't.

The fight against piracy is almost as successful as the war on drugs...

From what I read they made money, roughly a 15% increase in theater sales, also a reduction in movies being produced, a reduction (like the rest of American Businesses) in head count and the other info provided really looks at what the consumer IS spending their money on, newer TV's, more DVD players (Prices are coming down) and DVD sales are up and are expected to climb.

THe other item I saw as intersting is the fact that OTA (i.e. regular TV stations) are losing viewers to cable/sat/and VOD services. I wonder if this is why the TV stations are shooting for the BF in order to increase viewership?

Anyway, it seems that the MPAA is looking to lock up the DVD market since this is the growing segment, the Broadband market (i.e. cable modems and such) are increasing, but not at the rate they are saying, look at their stats.

So what all this means is that the MPAA is trying to control the public since they are now turning to the cable and satellite services for their entertainment options if not DVD's (rental or purchase)instead of going to the movie theaters. In some cases they have seen 50% growth in DVD sales over the past year or so. So whats their biatch? They are still making $$ just not where they want it.

Substantially increased DVD (and box-office) sales in a slumping economy (2002 numbers) when many businesses were experiencing losses, lay-offs, or just closing their doors for good. That's what I got from it. It's GOT to be the piracy.

u know what, screw the mpaa man. according to the statistics provided by grayarea, they have improved. so i dont see what the problem is. oh wait a minute, yes i do. they think that if they could rid of piracy then they could make more money. well if they would closer at thier own statistics and see that since piracy has gone up so has their income. free movie downloads is not a fight against them, we just dont want to waist oneyu on a film that is not worth our time. if i like what i see after downlaoding the film then ill go watch it at the theaters or buyt the thing. so they just need to shut the hell up already. this is gettting to be very annoying. dumb ass one sided minded money grabing sobs are starting to piss me off, im tired of hearing their bitching.
