TiVo have apparently doubled their number of subscribers to
2 million over the past year. Most of their income now comes from subscriptions and not from
PVR sales as they are selling less to general public as they once did. TiVo's long term viability with their apparent business model has been questioned by many now that it seems they may lose their exclusive deal to supply
DirecTV with PVR's. The company has set aside
$50 million to reach their target of
3 million subscribers by January 2005.
It has been speculated that TiVo may be involved in a joint deal with
Netflix to offer legal movie downloads. Netflix have announced plans to launch a legal movie download service and TiVo have revealed technology that would support it. Netflix are now apparently testing the service using content provided by
Warner Bros. but have not yet reached any major deals with them.
