Police officers under investigation for MPAA payoffs

Police officers under investigation for MPAA payoffs
Two NYPD cops are being investigated by Internal Affairs for allegedly accepting cash payoffs from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to bust DVD pirates. One officer, a sergeant on the force since 1992, has been transferred from the Staten Island Task Force to the 122nd Precinct pending the internal investigation. The officers ages 36 and 32, would arrest he pirates and then confiscate the pirated goods. They would be acting on information from MPAA investigators, many of whom are actually former cops.

"There is nothing improper about that practice. But on at least four occasions in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island, the task force officers arrested the vendors, confiscated the illegal movies and then allegedly received gratuities of several hundred dollars from the MPAA itself or its investigators" a source told the New York Post. The Motion Picture Association of America has strongly denied the allegations.

"We don't give cash to police officers," said Bill Shannon, an MPAA anti-piracy official. "We work with law-enforcement organizations by providing information and logistical support, and the police make the arrests." The Staten Island Task Force made headlines in 2003 after one of its officers, Bryan Conroy, shot and killed an innocent bystander at a Manhattan storage warehouse where they had went to bust pirates. Ousmane Zongo, an African immigrant, was unarmed. Conroy's trial earlier this year ended in a hung jury. He will be retried this summer.

New York cops are crooked as hell. There was a couple of them who were supposed to "infiltrate the mob" to bust mobsters. They ended up being for real mobsters. This doesn't surprise me.

oooooo the MPAA is looking bad!!! Good, serves em right, doing illegal searches, using cops to get to "pirates"

Probably more than some. We've only found about a few of them. Look how long the MAFIA cops were doing business, including "hits" according to NYC newspapers, before the public became aware of them.

well if you have corrupt cops maybe they should start looking higher up the chain and see how many judges the MPAA has infected with there so called crusade on file sharers

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but I have a very bad opinion of police. From my personal experience, they have done me not one bit of good but they don't hesitate to harass me. But like every other rule, there are exceptions.

andmerr, are you just that ignorant to think that 100% of all new york city officers are corrupt? I''m a police officer and I agree, there are some that make poor judgement dicissions. However the majority of officers have families, go to church, and try to live a ethicly sound life.

  • andmerr

@ zombieman: let me rephrase that, you are correct some are corrupt and some make poor judgement and its not only in your neck of the woods either. No i''m not ignorant, just a realist in this day and age.Good on you having such an ethical background, but maybe you should open your eyes a bit wider and see the truth thats staring you in the eyes.

@ squizzle: freedom of speech . i like you have had a bad experience with the cops .

ok, ok, whatever you say. I''m in lawenforcement and im the blind on to what goes on out there. We could argue about this all day. But in the end you''ll still have your opinion, and I respect that.

  • jacsac

@zombieman- I hope you don''t have any backed up movies because that would make you a law breaker. Regardless of what anyone says "all" cops break laws here or there but they hold the billy club at the end of the day. No cop has ever done one good thing for me. Although I rather enjoyed having a gun jammed in my back or the head busting.

    25.4.2005 21:37 #13

  • squizzle

now now jacsac, I''m sure zombieman wasn''t the one that did it. I don''t think it''s right to patronize him here.

They should be fired and never be able to participate in law enforcement again.. ANYONE who takes an oath to uphold the law and then uses it to their advantage has no buisness walking around with a badge. As far as I am concerned they should get fired. It makes me sick.. When I see " They got transfered " A dirty cop is far worse than any criminal in my book..

OMG, now I see. So you think if a police officer breaks the speed limit while in his personal vehicle that makes him a corrupt cops. LMAO, dude you need to get out more. And you say "no cop has ever did one good thing for me". What do you want us to do for you, give you a cookie or something? Have you ever had a report filed by a police officer, or needed one filed and him refuse? Do police not get drunk drivers off the road when they see them? Do they not arrest dealers for selling drugs to your kids? What about the rapest out there that might have raped your mother or your wife as she walked around the next corner. What about the 16 year old kid that decided he was going to test out his new car and run 100mph through the middle of town. However the kid didnt quite make it to the intersection your sister was crossing because a police officer stopped him before he made it that far..... If you want a police officer to do something specifically for you, then I dont know what you want. I think your the one that needs to open your eyes to reality and realize what good police officers do, either directly or indirectly. And if you got a gun shoved in the back of your head then you more than likely did something to prevoke it, such as being stupid a shoving your hand in your pocket while being frisked. Belive me, I hear this five mornings a week of my life, every week. Someone, thinks they were mistreated and wants to complain about it. Then 95% percent of the time when I hear the full story the officer acted resonable. The general public doesnt understand the jobs, and what police officers are confronted with daily. On one occasion I had a 19 yoa kid that was under arrest for domestic violence. He decided to run out the back door and into his pitbull pin. I finally sprayed the guy and all his dogs with pepper spay, and he finally came out. Then his mom comes out and starts hitting me telling me I shouldnt have sprayed him. Total ignorance.. But owell, thats a different topic.

I'm not going to get into my own personal stories, but I will say that I've been the criminal and victim before, and the officers I had to deal with when I was the victim were treating me as if I deserved it, which is not right. It's not their job to judge, that's why we have judges. I have run into a few honestly good-hearted police officers who are cops because they want to do some good in the world, but I've also run into some very crooked ones who get involved in organized crime and stuff like that.

I must say that I see alot of stupidity here. Next time somethings wrong, dont call the police. Remember, they are corrupt and you dont need them. Or you can get a check on reality. If you dont like the police, its probably because you have a guilty conscience about something. If you have a bad experience, do you quit dealing with something?, no. If you have ever been in a car wreck, do you quit driving?, no. So heres the deal, hide your ignorance and bite your toungue, not everyone is what you say thaey are. And to all the honest police officers reading this...thanks for what you do!

Too much of anything is a bad thing. In this case, it's ignorance! No one in there "RIGHT MIND" really beleives all cops are corrupt. 1 bad cop will help the notion that all are bad, but we know better. Do we say that because on waiter in New York is bad that all New York waiters are bad. Come on give me a break. It's better to let people think you're stupid than to open your mouth and prove it!

I think the attitude comes with the uniform. Kinda like a clown--no matter if a clown is pissed off, happy, sad, depressed, if You're getting paid to act happy, then that's Your job. Just like a cop, if You're pissed off, happy, sad, or depressed, when it comes time to put on the uniform, then You're job is to act like a d1ckhead. Just my 2 cents...

Classic case of the minority making the majority look bad!!!

    Sound familiar to anyone?
