Nokia releases N91 music phone

The world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, Finnish Nokia, announced yesterday its latest phone, Nokia N91 which takes its aim at Apple's iPod and other portable audio players.

The phone features a 4GB harddrive and a standard stereo headset jack. Additionally the phone includes an integrated wireless LAN adapter, which allows the phone to access Internet via WLAN networks, and allows easy-to-use wireless transfer of audio tracks from desktop computers. The phone can be also synchronized by connecting it to a regular USB 2.0 port.



N91's audio player supports MP3, M4A, AAC and WMA formats and the 4GB HDD is capable of storing upto 12.5 hours of music using the latest audio codecs. Th device is a so-called 3G phone and should be available worldwide by the end of the year. Pricing details were not announced yet.

Nokia's idea is clear -- people are now carrying tons of gadgets with them, typically a PDA, a phone and a portable digital music player. By combining all of these into one unit might prove to be a successful concept.

  There idea is in the right place, but because it is the first of its kind, its going to cost a ton.

  hope nokia have more sucess with this than they did with the ngage. that was good in theory, but totally sucked in practice (sadly i own one)

  well. i think its alrite havin all in one but it just aint going to beat IPOD! People can run linux in their ipod for gods sake! But overall its cool.

  The concept goes a bit further than that. For the first time, with the exception of N-gage, Nokia has derived a product line, which differs from the mainstream in features but also the product naming is different.
  
  According to Jorma Ollina (CEO), and Anssi Vanjoki (EVP), the NSeries stands for products with uncompromised multimedia features. First models announced were the N91 music phone, N90 video camera phone, while the N70 is the smallest 3G enabled phone with a 2Mpix camera.

  Certainly not an ipod killer but it's what I've been waiting for. I can't justify just buying an mp3 player with the little amount I will use it but combined with a phone it will be something I will want to purchase.
  
  Just comes down to price I suspect. As someone said being the first of it's kind is going to make it pricey, but if they can effectively price this there will be a massmarket for it.
