Sony updates PSP firmware to v2.01

Sony updates PSP firmware to v2.01
Sony has released a firmware update for the PSP in Japan (a few days ago) and now in North America. However, there isn't really much of a system update in PSP 2.01 from Sony. In fact, the only thing that 2.01 firmware does is fixes a "security flaw". That security flaw is the same one that is used to run several small homebrew applications and loaders on PSP 2.00.

As most of you should be aware, the PSP 2.00 flaw that was discovered eventually led to the release of a downgrader that allowed PSP users to rollback firmware to PSP 1.50, allowing them to run homebrew code. Sony disapproves of running "unauthorized software" on PSPs and that is the only reason this PSP 2.01 update has come along.

So to put it simply, if you want to run homebrew on your PSP, do not update to 2.01. You can't run homebrew on anything newer than 1.50. However, if you have 2.00 firmware you can downgrade to 1.50. Read how to do that using this guide.

What does this mean for those of us who have not yet bought a PSP?

Do we have a chance to downgrade firmware if the newly shipped PSPs already have firmware 2.1 installed?

If you bought a PSP anytime soon I'd highly doubt that it would alkready have 2.01 firmware... but basically the answer is no. Currently there is no downgrader for PSP 2.01!

hate to rain on anybody's parade, but my mate just got three PSP's for the family as christmas presents (wife wouldn't let him get one if he didn't get one each for the kids too),so he's bought 2 for the kids and one for himself. all of them are UK machines and all of them are 2.51 firmware. just out of interest, has anybody ever noticed that SONY always seem to leave the door open to play 'backup software' on their machines when they are first released, only to make life harder once the machines are established? disc swaps on the original psx, and not to forget the first ps2 machines that could play all regions of DVD with no macrovision.
