Apple unveils new iPod with video playback capabilities

Apple unveils new iPod with video playback capabilities
Apple Computers Inc. unveiled on Wednesday another addition to the iPod family of products, this time with the ability to play back video. Speculation that Apple was to unveil an "iPod Video" was rampant on the Internet after Apple had invited journalists to a special event held today. The new iPod, which is again smaller and thinner than the normal iPod models comes with either 30GB storage or 60GB storage, priced at $299 and $399 respectively.

The company has sold 28 million has often added new editions and improvements to the models. The new iPod features a 2.5-inch screen to playback video or to view photos. The new iPod features a longer lasting battery, advertised with battery life of up to 20 hours, five more than before. It's about half an inch thin, with the 30GB iPod taking up 45% less space than the original iPod model.

The company also revealed it will begin selling some music videos through it's iTunes music store for $1.99 each, some short animations from Pixar Studios Inc. and also some popular TV shows from ABC for the same price a day after they air. The iPod is advertised a holding 15,000 songs (based on AAC 128/kbps), 25,000 photos (based on iPod compatible photos imported from iTunes) and up to 150 hours of video (Video capacity is based on 4 minutes per H.264 750-kbps video combined with 128-kbps audio.)

iPod Video Specs:

  • Holds up to 15,000 songs and full-color album art
  • 30GB model is 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.43 inches; 60GB model is 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.55 inches
  • Bright 2.5-inch, 320 x 240 pixel TFT display
  • Up to 20 hours of battery life
  • Holds up to 25,000 photos
  • Holds up to 150 hours of video
  • Plays video or photo slideshows on TV via the optional Dock
  • Apple Click Wheel
  • Accessory-compatible Dock connector
  • Dock works with the new Apple Remote
  • Charges and syncs via USB
  • Works with Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP
  • Syncs contacts, calendars and to-do lists

So all in all it sounds like a pretty nice device but we will all have to sit back to see if there are similar complints made about this model as there has been about the last iPod Apple introduced, the iPod Nano.

I just was watchin the news here... and they said that they unvelied it and so on... An i just read the article the Ipod seems to b really good.

But again i will wait for the price to drom cause for that price i can either get one of 2 things either upgrade something on mp PC or get a new game console... And I feel i have enough music playback and video capabilities with my PC and PS2 at the moment...

But I gotta say it is a great new development...

I like the idea of having video on the iPod but it means you can only watch it when your sitting down. It's not ideal when your walking about or in the gym. It is a nice featute to watch music videos when your sitting down on a bus or train. The price is no doubt expensive.

wow that is one sexy mother phukker!

damn im getting one of those. though i think ill still hang on to my 60 gig pod because then i can dedicate it to video and pictures.

      :)

by the way, can you add video's other than apples videos....because considering they charge £60 for a harry potter audiobook, i dont even want to know what they'd charge for a decent tv episode...

This is amazing. Better then PSP. It can view photos, moives, and listen to music and it even have games. WHo would buy PSP when you have this. It comes with 30g or 60g hardrive. Does PSP comes with any memory. Also the batterie life is so cool. 20hours. compare to 5hours PSP.
How did afterdawn knew that they are getting video ipod on 10/12/05? When are they comeing up with next one?

      i found this
Quote:The video iPod will play music videos, video podcasts and movie trailers downloaded form the updated iTunes Music Store, but will not play movies ripped from DVD, which are typically copy-protected.

However, it will play unprotected movies converted to Apple's QuickTime format, even if the movies are downloaded illegally from file-sharing services, said an Apple representative after Jobs' presentation. It will also display home movies, which can be exported to the iPod via a new function in Apple's iMovie software.
wow, he really knows how to reel in the customers. so now, i can blame arnold schwarznegger when i get in a bit of a fight and i can blame steven jobs when the RIAA come knocking! lol

      but anyway, nice to know.

and this also means the amount of videos circualting bittorrent will increase dramatically..

I was checking something on apple.com and I thought they were still advertsing the nano, take a closer look and I see this! I knew Apple would realease something better after the nano! If I do get it (and most likely will!), it's a MUST in black! + video capabilities!!!

btw, if you look at the Apple store, you would see the new G5...looks cool!

I'm wondering, but does anybody know what the battery life is for playing video (playing video obviously requires substantially more power resources)? Do u have to convert all your video files to Quicktime format in order to view them?

Also, i wonder what kind of effect this would have on companies like archos and creative who already have portable video players and portable media centers... (will people ditch these previous products?)

I think the question now is: how easy and practical would it be to transfer a DVD into MPEG4 and then onto your iPod? That's the only reason I'd get this thing, if iTunes would easily and seemlessly incorporate video encoding capabilities...

It cant play DivX, so its phuckin useless to me, i hate quicktime so much, even though this new ipod looks great ill wait till either the firmware is hacked and allows DivX, or hopefuly the 6th generation allows DivX, or at least avis

why are people acting like this is such a new idea? IRiver players have been able to do this for a while as well as others. I sware people just drool over Ipods like they are the greatest for no real reason.

I don't get why people are saying they are ditching their psp's for this or not getting a psp instead of this. If you want to watch video's the PSP's screen is a hell of a lot better then the ipod's.

These will sell like hot cakes at their enormous price but if the 30gb was 200 and the 60gb was 300, they would sell twice the amount of them. I could get one at 200 but 300, come on damnit.

      Why get Ipod then PSP
1.Way better battery life on music.
2.It comes with 60g hardrive (Memory stick for 1g is like $100)
3.Way thinner, smaller and weight less then PSP
4.Last longer then PSP. (Sony products break easily)

30GB: Up to 14 hours of music playback; up to 3 hours of slideshows with music; up to 2 hours of video playback
60GB: Up to 20 hours of music playback; up to 4 hours of slideshows with music; up to 3 hours of video playback

quote ''and 2-3 hours for video ''

Whoa, buddy. For your information, the PSP can play videos off thje memory stick for like 5 hours. And if your going to listen to music on the PSP, all you simply have to do is turn the screen off ( hold he screen button for a few seconds) so the battery life will greatly increase, then put it on hold, and listen to music.

In response to the PSp's short life -while- playing games...
you wana know what you do people??? You play them off your memory stick. This means you wont be using the umd laser. 5-7 hours right there, morons.

And really, how the freak are you going to be able to watch movies on the screen? Tiny isnt always better.

Plus, off topic though, another reason to buy a PSP is so you can use it as a remote control and when your at high school turn the TV's on and off...lol

( which i do, alot by the way, heh)

As long as you're in college you can get the $30 off. You just go to the website, and there is a special student section. Select your school, and get the money off.

    • rihgt682

      @PANIC567
Even with memory card the most you can get out of it's 4hours with the lowest screen setting. If you turn off the screen of PSP while listen to music it's 10hours. Ipod is 20. I have PSP myself. Let's just say i have 2,000 songs and want to watch 3movies. Let's see that would cost me 6 memory card and that would mean $600. Why carry all those junk when you can carry couple of movies and thousands of music with you.

    • thenewxxx

Think of the bright side. You can use this as the reason to have the copyright office break the encryption for you.

And as far as the discount goes, yeah it is for everything I guess. I always thought it was just college, but now they even have options for homeschool.

No ones trying to start a flame war about wich video format it uses, but the fact is that the megalomaniacs at apple only impose one format and one alone, theres, not because its superiror, or popular, but because it will put people in a position were they have to buy more apple products to maximize the video option. Either way, for the rest of the world who doesnt use quicktime, and isnt willing to switch ( wich are the same people, myself included, who dont see the need to switch from mp3 to mp4 ) to quicktime makes the video features pretty null and void. Downloading music videos off itunes is jsut like haveing album art, or stupid photos on your ipod, and i promise i NEVER look at any of the couple dozen photos i have on mine, wich makes one realzie apple only ontroduced ipod photo as a way to finaly get people off there backs about haveing a color screen like other player like iriver.

but you are right. there are many other (better) players out there which support many video types and have large bright and better screens. but....(and there is no other explanation for it) they are not ipods...

Video Format is very important for many reasons:

      1. Many people would want to take dvd's they own and cut them to xvid's or avi's or mpeg4's so they can watch them on the ipod. That isn't going to happen.
      2. No one uses quick time. No one.
      3. Many people (and i know someone is going to get mad me for saying this) were hoping to load all those movies they download load illegally and play them on here. Not so obviously.
      4. I am out of points lol

hey guys, how does this compare to the iaudio x5, i have been wondering whether i should buy this, the iaudio x5, or the archos gmini 402. I am interested in portobility, because im going to be carrying it in my pocket all day, a voice record feature (like the ipod has the addons) for recording teachers leactures, and mabye some video feature to watch while the teachers bore me with their lectures which if i need i can have recorded. Radio would also be nice, and if it must have video, i really want a video out to watch on my big tv. I was wondering how the quality of video out will be on this, if it is like XviD on the tv, it is good. I also wonder if i can put my XviD movies onto this thing, and whether i should buy this ipod, or wait until somehting better, perhaps during christmas comes out. Or should i just wait till this becomes more glitchless, like waiting for the next firmware update. When will it be avaliable in black? alright thx guys. Also how will voice recoring quility be, and wat will be the best voice recorder for this? alright- does the warrenty cover all batteries? k thx.

Is there anyway I can exchange my old ipod for one of the new ones? That pisses me off that they just replace the old one with this one. That screws everyone who bought the old one, and can't afford to just double their price to get this new one.

Converting any video type to other types is not as hard as you all think. I own a RCA Lyra RD2780 and will probably be upgrading to this in the near future and connecting the Lyra to my car stereo input as more of a hardwire device due to its lack of battery power (only 3-4hours). I noticed however that it takes relatively few video formats itself. After a lot of research I found a slew of resources out there and used a bunch of free programs to decrypt all many video files (including DVDs) and strip them down for use on it. I have no doubt that you could do the same to this. I have heard many say "it cant be done." These people just arent determined enough to do what they are legally allowed to with their own DVDs. Ill own one and Ill do it the first day.

Dont let them get you down, itll be easy to do once you learn the process.

There are many programs out right now that let you convert video into .mp4 or .mov so they will compatable with the new ipod. Someone also mentioned that upgrades will be available on the firmware allowing playback of more video formats. Also, the new 30gb ipod plays video and its the same price as the 20gb at $299 retail so you really cant go wrong!

I record all my TV shows on my computers TV Tuner then edit and compress them in VirtualDub to XviD. I would actually consider buying the iPod video over a ZEN. But with no XivD, DivX or other MPEG-4 .AVI support its no better than the iPod photo!!!!!!!

      What a wast!

The ZEN VISION is still 20X better than this piece of crap.

movies are getting smaller and smaller... first for the psp... who wants to watch a tiny ass screen? (UMD) and now its going to be on a smaller screen (ipod)... my opinion id rather stick to DVDs

How are you going to fit a Portable DVD player in your pocket.

Well regular batteries wouldn't be able to last 20 hours. But it would be nice to have their batteries in removable form. So after like two years when their battery dies we could just buy a new one and don't have to send it in to them to replace it.

hows the recording quality for all of these devices (iaudio x5, video ipod, gmini 402) - and which has the best audio playback, im interested in recording lecutres so i want a good voice recorder, the ipods would be the addons. Also, is 10 hours really enough battery life for the gmini 402? that is a real setback for me, is it really that short of a time? Im really having a hard time deciding between these two

I'm waiting for the iPod that will take pictures and capture video, thats gotta be the next step. Its really not just a portable music device anymore. They might as well just add an Apple Palm/CE like software to it.

I am very curious if the iPod will play videos greater than just 320x240, if it is supposed to ouput to a tv... it would be rather bad to only play at that resolution. I've been trying to find out from apple about it, but no one is able to tell me anything yet. Any ideas?

If it does output to Tv's, it will probably be able to play at higher resolutions. That resolution would look bad on even a small 13" TV.
