iPod continues to dominate

iPod continues to dominate
Apple Computer Inc. can rest assured that its iPod music player will dominate the market for some time yet, but why is it that these very expensive, small (or tiny in Nano's case) devices are so popular? Is it because they reign over everything else in audio or video quality? Not really. Most of the success just comes from very good timing on Apple's part. Take iTunes for example; the recording industry was complaining about file sharing piracy when it offered no alternative. Apple was smart to get there and offer that vital legal alternative.

The iPod, which made its debut in 2001, isn't really just a digital music player either. It has become a fashion accessory also. The advertisements for iPods also have a great effect on consumers, especially when you consider they feature the most popular music at the time and some of the world's biggest stars such as Eminem. That alone is enough to draw the attention from millions of kids all over the world who then continue to add iPods to their wish list for Christmas or birthdays etc. And boy, they sure did that in 2005.

During the holiday quarter, more than 14 million iPods were sold. That figure could have even been much higher as many interested consumers couldn't find stores with any left. "Absolutely there were times when we would find ourselves out of stock," says Lori DeCou, spokesperson at Best Buy Canada Ltd. Indigo reported iPods sold out as fast as they came in. Since the iPod is so popular, some consumers have even begun to incorrectly refer to all MP3 players as iPods, regardless of the real make.

This is also seen in some MP3 player related things such as "podcasting" which basically refers to making recordings that are designed to be listened to on MP3 players. This wasn't particular created by Apple at all, and works with other players than iPods, yet the name podcasting is a combination of iPod and broadcasting. Another example is "iPod ear". This refers to the contribution all MP3 players make in contributing to hearing loss. It doesn't have to be an iPod, yet it is still called iPod ear.

This is frustrating to Apple haters and rivals who often complain that terms such as podcasting give credit to Apple for nothing, and suggest words such as "blogcasting" instead. Apple's iTunes/iPod tie also contributes to the success of both the iPod and the iTunes store. iTunes customers seek iPods to store their music, and iPod owners seek iTunes to buy their music. This is a main reason why iTunes has now sold over 850 million tracks.

Eventually though, iPod's success will slip and more space will be created for the rest of the players in the market, including Sony, Samsung, SanDisk and Creative Technologies Inc. Perhaps mobile devices with MP3 support with large storage capacities will take a chunk out of the iPod, as the iTunes phone was not as popular as expected. All we can all do is sit back and see what happens, and you can count on us at AfterDawn to do our very best to cover the markets as they change.

I love it. Apple is great. Good for them after Gates stole the Idea for windows from Jobs. I dont believe there are any indications that Ipod is slowing down and making room, if anything they are eating up more of the space. Ipod is still in the growth stage and wont hit maturity for years although they wont if ever hit the decline unless something terrible happens like muslims installing bombs in them and using them for terror devices...

Someday someone will make the cell phone to end all mp3 players anyhow and my money is on Samsung. Must be all the Kim-chee!

I could not imagine my life without my Pod

What significant audio qualities does an ipo dpossess that makes it mor edesireable. My take on it - American Pop culture breathes, feeds, and is run off of fads. Somethign must separate those desperate for belonging from those who abide by nonconformity and dissent.

Honestly though, until Ipod, MP3 players were for geeks and "fags" (Eyes of those who wrestle each other in spandex suits). Now everyone has to have one as a status symbol.

I do use an Ipod mini 6GB, I got it for free mind you. Right now I prefer using my PSP due to superior audio processing (Using said company proprietary codec of course, better is better whether blonde or brunnette though).

I don't think the price will drop soon.
Ipod would be best if they fix couple of features.
    1.removiable battiers.
    2.Better audio quilty.
    3.No itunes needed.
4.able to transfer songs to different computer.
Those are the only reasons that i'm not getting an ipod yet.

Yes, advertising boosts it up, while other mp3 player's such as the iRiver are not properly advertised. I would never get an iPod, even if hell froze over, but I feel other players should be made more represented.

Apple have done well to market the iPod. But that doesn't mean the iPod is the best. IMO it's just a fashion accessory.

I think the article left out one major reason why the iPod is so popular...because of the layout of the software integrated in the iPod. It's so easy to switch from song to song. It was something not seen previous to the iPod. Other mp3 players' integrated layout of songs in the actual player were slow and problematic, and difficult to navigate.

Other than that, celebs using the iPod(exposure) = people(kids especially) want to buy it to be "in"

Boot him and pull that massive list out of here, it makes th epage a mile long.

When you have eminem advertising the ipod, you need to run. They will focus and are focusing too much on advertising and have crap product. My ipod and my friends nano and 60GB all sound like sh*t.

I brought my g/f the apple iPod video only yesterday, But imo i HATE! that right HATE! apple. i would never in 1000000 years own anything that is even related to apple, i have use the powerbooks and the G5 and imo they are shite, i hate them, the only thing going for them is they look better than most other PCs or Laptops, except, imo, the new Sony Viao PCs, they look way better than the apple PCs. When i brougt my g/f the apple video i put a film onto it for her, and i was actually kind of impressed for a bit, but then i noticed that the iPods video quality was not good, it made the picture very grainy. It was nothing to make you want to take it back to the store, but if you are intending to use the iPod video for veiwing videos alot i think you would soon get annoyed. Another thing that annoyed me was that Apple dont supply and software for you to convert you Films into the proper format.

But yeah in my opinion Apple make good products in the Mp3 market, probably the best you can get. But for the prices they charge, the video and sound quality should be better. In the PC and Laptop market Apple make some of the worst products i have ever used imo. And they charge crazy amounts for a substandard product. And to top it all off they have some of the WORST customer service i have ever come accross.

There is nothing else as good as the iPod video out there yet, even the new Zen Vision suxx, it looks rubbish and is too big.

People have bee saying the new Samsung and Sandisk Mp3s will challenge Apple but imo i dont think they will, the sandisk is 6GB max and plays videos, but it has a smaller screen, smaller space, and not as good looking as the apple video and the same goes for the samsung, i dont think Samsung or Sandisk will even scratch Apple Video. No one will until someone like sony or samsung bring out the ultimate Mobile/Mp3 player. Which is a shame!

    Damn you Apple :'(((((

I hate those people who think that the ipod is the best thing in the world. edited by ddp! There are plenty of other MP3 players that are cheaper and have a larger storage compacity. It pisses me off when people think that all MP3 players are ipods. I have a Dell Pocket DJ and I got it for the same price as an ipod mini at the time and it holds hundreds more songs. I wish people would just buy an MP3 player for what it does and not that it is popular. edited by ddp
