Pricing for PS3 games announced

Pricing for PS3 games announced
Japanese site Impress Watch has reported that PlayStation 3 games will cost up to £52 ($100), gathering information from "multiple information sources." Most of the upcoming PS3 games will drop in the £39-52 ($75-100) range while even the most popular PS2 releases barely exceed £39.

It seems like Sony is going to be taking back money lost in the console creating process by selling over-expensive games. This already traditional business strategy has been also performed by Microsoft, yet you can get Xbox 360 games almost £20 ($38) cheaper. The cost of the PS3 unit, whether it is the dropped $410 in Japan or the more costly in the US or Europe, with these expensive games, it will lighten consumers' wallet quite a bit.

PlayStation 3 will launches November 17 in the US, November 11 in Japan and March 2007 in Europe.

UPDATE: According to SlashGear Sony is taking preorders of PlayStation 3 games for "only" $59,99, which is comparable to Xbox 360 game prices. All the seven games available in Sony Style USA have the price of $59,99 and include Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Call of Duty 3, Full Auto 2: Battlelines, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tony Hawk's Project 8, and Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom.

They could have at least brought the console price cut to the US.

Anyway, I don't need this thing.

This has got to be false. $75 and up for a game???

    That's just...CRAZY!!!

That just makes up my mind for me. Next generation gaming is not for me, I'll keep dusting my Xbox and PS2. The Wii is looking very interesting though...

this is what you get when a company invests too much on technology that could potentially not delivery, so in order to save themselves, the price of games suffer.

This just goes to show how piracy is still fueled in one way by the ever climbing prices of software.

Ok my bit on the whole PS3 situation; the biggest cock up in console history LOL

No one is going to pay $100 for a game...and (for me) £450 is v pricy for a console - (i live in UK)

It's such a joke and sony have rly missed this one - They are going to suffer v big losses with this one...

First of all, remember that the pres. of sony said that PS3 was going to very expensive, and that thier goal was that the PS3 is supposed to be an entertainment center, not a video game. That is thier excuse for making this system so pricey... first of all I dont give a rats ass what it is, I know all of us just want this system to play video games on, not to watch Barney in High Def. So now we have to chalk up $600 for the High-End version plus 70-100 bux per game, with the final amount I could be spending on launch i would rather buy a decent used car and pick up chicks then waste my valuble hard earned cash buying this crappy system, and if you say "OHH IT HAS A Blu-ray PLAYER!" I'd rather spend $1000 on that cause this the Blu-ray player on this system is going to be watered down just like the dvd player on the ps2.

  • Pop_Smith

Well, I think its crazy to price games that high. According to the update it says "$60" but thats still higher then most XBox 360 games (most are $50 with some at $60).

I am sure though, that their are enough Sony Fanboys out there to keep the console at least a float for a while until price cuts can be initiated.

While I agree this is expensive and will wait it out until prices drop, come on guys. The USA always had it easy on prices!

I also won't buy until the Hi-def TV's are up to par and prices reduce on them also.

The UK prices for PS2 games is still £39.99 for new release top titles, though most stores manage to put them out at £29.99 on special offer or 'Sale' terms.

We are the one's who are going to get hit the most, I would love to be able to buy at US pricing.

Sony will HAVE to bring prices down quickly as most people will not spend that much on the machine or the games. Sony also said they expect this in the outset and are aiming for really hardened gamers.

    26.9.2006 09:48 #10

  • Gosurf101

They know we will have no choice to buy them at what ever the price is. I mean there is no chance of piracy for at least a couple years with burners being well of a grand and $20 buck a pop for the media.

    26.9.2006 10:09 #11

  • Chris1000

I have to agree with limelight. $75 for ONE game! Who the hell are they JOKING WITH!

They are REALLY going to have to lower that price drastically if they are going to get their usual customers, the impulse buyers who buy a game on a whim.

$75 is way too much for one game, even if it's the next Final Fantasy or other popular RPG game.

Nintendo must have a grin from ear to ear after hearing about this. You could have a Wii and like 6 games for the price of a PS3. Pretty rediculous.

  • JaguarGod

Quote:I would love to be able to buy at US pricingProbably why lots of people from the UK buy from US on eBay. The price difference more than makes up for the shipping. For instance, I am sure a PS3 game will sell for $55 on the high end + $12 shipping to the UK, you are looking at $67 or approx £36. Then you save the 19% VAT on top of that unless the seller is an ox...

Anyways, if you take minimum wage into account, then it is cheaper in the UK than the US. US has a minimum wage of $5.15 while the UK is £5.05. This converts to $9.58 or 1.86 times the US rate. Divide the prices by 1.86 and you get:

    £39 => $40.30 => 19% cheaper than US
    £52 => $53.72 => 10.45% cheaper than US

As for figuring out how they come up with the prices, I am not sure. It almost seems like they take the US price and then convert this to Euros and use that figure for their currency:

    $49.99 = 39.29 Euros or £39
    $59.99 = 47.16 Euros or £47

This might make no sense, but I am sure a lot of other things will work out like this.

For instance, I am sure Double Devon Creme is around £4.71 in UK for the small jar and a bottle of Coca cola (the bottles usually found in coolers by the checkout) is around £1.

Also, keep this in mind when comparing prices. Someone who graduates from a University in the US can only expect to make around $12 to $18 (if they're lucky) per hour with the short end being most probable and barely more than the minimum wage in the UK. It sort of evens out in the end, becuase no one can really buy anything and be happy...

Wow, thats ALOT of money. I hope this is a cruel joke because if it isn't, there not gonna make that much money if the games are so expensive....

  • munx

That does not seem credible at all. NO ONE would pay that much for a game. UNLESS they really want piracy to take over...

Im going to take my 600 instead of a ps3 im going to buy a sweet computer upgrade. New mobo, and processor, and graphics card. 100 dollars a game, suck it sony!

it could just be a price holder for the time being, meaning that the price could go up. right now the SonyStyle website is listing games for $59.99 they are 3rd party games, and it is yet to be officially confirmed. here is the link

I don't think I would want to drop $100 on a game. It's kind of like gambling away your money. Sometimes you end up with a game that doesn't meet your expectations.

    27.9.2006 03:35 #22

  • ZippyDSM

This is the worst move yet...mainly because they simply don't make 100$ games anymore I can name 2 games in my life I paid nearly 100 each for.....Phantasy Star 4 and Final Fantasy 3....
Wel it seems the PS3 will sadly be A number one moded, chiped console yet...... at the rate they update and change game detection abilities your better off saving 750-900 for a pre mod system with a flashable/upgradeable chip..

I don't care if a burner is 500$ look at these unreasonable prices..........I would rather pay 200 more on the system than pay 30-50 more on a game ><

One can easily copy a BD-ROM game even right now, before the release of the PS3. Blank BD-Rom's are already available (Blu-ray-Recordable/dp/B000F7LKOI/sr=8-4/qid=1159373847/ref=sr_1_4/102-1953941-8479361?ie=UTF8&s=hi" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BNR25AHE-Bd-r-Blu-ray-Recordable/dp/B000F7LKOI/sr=8-4/qid=1159373847/ref=sr_1_4/102-1953941-8479361?ie=UTF8&s=hi). The BD-ROM drive is too.(http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-BDR-101ABK-drive-BD-RE-internal/dp/B000HJBE54/sr=8-1/qid=1159373907/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-1953941-8479361?ie=UTF8&s=electronics)
Come late november, early december, these prices will go down, allowing the people to make efficient copies of PS3 games. Piracy is priceless, wouldn't you agree.

And if I purcahse the PS3 (still deciding lol), you can bet your ass I'm going to make copies of the games, $75.00 for a single game is insane.

    27.9.2006 08:20 #24

  • Pop_Smith

SovMish: I am not knocking you but, did you know that the games are encrypted with an encryption that is not broken yet as it is pretty new.
Without something to get past this encryption you cannot backup your games.

Its kind of like CSS for DVDs only more complex. Plus even if you could copy your games the PS3 doesn't yet, and probably won't for six months at least, have a modchip so the PS3 can't read the unsigned code thus making it impossible to play the backed up games.

    27.9.2006 08:32 #25

  • ZippyDSM

    Pop_Smith
thats why if anyone is half interested in the PS3 to squeral away your pennies now and get one when a mod chip is made....its time we bring the front to sony >>

    27.9.2006 09:11 #26

  • DarkJello

I would much rather pay an extra few hundred on the console [$600-$700] and have games that are $50, then have what Sony is suggesting now.

    27.9.2006 11:18 #27

  • LadieNite

Oh man...that is way too expensive for my pockets. I think I would stick with the PS2 and hope that prices will drop for the PS3.

    27.9.2006 12:23 #28

  • SovMish

Pop_Smith: While what you say is true, the copy protection will be broken very very quickly, possibly even weeks after the release of the PS3.

And regarding the PS3 not reading the games, ofcourse it will read it. You can now copy DVD games from the X-Box and it will read them, same principle here. New format, so what?

The trouble starts with the PS4. It will COMPLETELY eliminate piracy. With no physical drive to take games, there is no way to pirate them. That will be Sony's decision however.

    27.9.2006 19:17 #29

  • Pop_Smith

ZIppyDSM - Your probably right. :)

Quote:the copy protection will be broken very very quickly, possibly even weeks after the release of the PS3Well I am sure hackers will work on it I think it will be more like a few months before the first modchip is released. It will probably be crude too, with lots of soldering points like the first XBox chips were.

Quote:You can now copy DVD games from the X-Box and it will read them, same principle here. New format, so what?Wow, I know I am being sarcastic but you can now trick a regular XBox without any mods (soft ones included) into thinking your burned ones are pressed and signed by MS? THats the first I have heard of this.

On the "So what its only a new format" comment, the format is not the problem (although the average consumer probably won't drop an extra $1,000+ for a Blu-ray burner, plus their are no reliable media companies making blank Blu-ray media.) Its the encryption, DVD Jon says he will try to release a tool that will crack AACS around March 2007.
But, we will have to wait and see it might be more complex then the hackers are thinking it is.

Quote:The trouble starts with the PS4. It will COMPLETELY eliminate piracy. With no physical drive to take games, there is no way to pirate them. That will be Sony's decision however.Source? I don't think they will ever make it possible to completely eliminate piracy, only slow it. If the games aren't on a disk or other physical media how will it run? Off a hard drive and you get the games by connecting to a $ony online store? If thats the case someone will find a way to hook it up to your PC and transfer downloaded games to the HDD. If you disconnect the ethernet cord, it can't connect to the internet, if its wireless I am sure someone will find a way to disable it.

One good thing, its used in BOTH Blu-ray and HD-DVD (I personally support HD-DVD, although I don't want to spark a debate right here) so when its cracked it will help consumers who support either party.

the PS3 is a monster with the limits tooken off DVD size meaning larger textures (better graphics) and its power it should be a jump is graphics simalur to the Xbox to the 360,you will see a diffrance but in the end its just "paint" covering gameplay and thats my gripe for the past 5 years

Armored Core 4 and this Train simulation game. the rest havent been announced yet.
