AACS LA confirms AACS bypass

The Advanced Access Content System (AACS) Licensing Authority has confirmed to the media that the AACS copy protection used to protect the contents of HD DVD and Blu-ray titles has been bypassed. However, the group wanted to make it clear that it was only a "limited" breach and that it does not represent a weakness in AACS, but displays a problem in software players instead.

The companies behind the AACS system have been investigating the claims from hacker muslix64 since the release of BackupHDDVD and the original YouTube video (which was removed) showing BaclkupHDDVD decrypting and extracting from Full Metal Jacket. Since then, HD DVD-rips have appeared on BitTorrent trackers and Usenet and Blu-ray got its own decryption tool, BackupBluray.



AACS spokesman Michael Ayers said that the hacker managed to get keys needed to decrypt the titles from "one or more pieces of software" but did not confirm whether the licensing for AACS would be revoked from the company(ies) who market the software. "We certainly have not ruled out any particular response and we will take whatever action is appropriate," Mr Ayers said.

  LOL...You guys are dreaming to think your not going to be hacked..And called it limited breach sound like your chokeing when you say this AACS.I should have the right to backup something i own.

  this is what you get for the hdmi only trick you pulled to try to force everyone to buy ANOTHER HDTV. untill you stop fucking with tv standards and make shit cheap ill pirate till te sun comes up. i dont think i have paid for music, premium tv, or movies for like 4 years (ever since consumer dvd burners hit the market:-))

  Please keep on alienating your customers and refusing the obvious answer (ie sane and reasonable pricing).
  Please keep on wasting vast efforts and huge resources creating these supposedly 'security systems' (none of which has ever proved uncrackable, ever) and which cost the customer so much when loaded onto the prices you charge.

  I realize we have NO control over the words used by these big companies that are trying to stifle our rights, but can't WE (at least here on AD.c) stop using such derogatory terms??? Instead of saying "...hacker muslix64...", how about something more like "...consumer software advocate & developer muslix64..."?

  LOL. Funny to hear that they are dying this break down in their encryption down. You guys keep thinking that. Sooner or later the hacker will break it completley and it will become like any other normal DVD encryption out here already.

Of course they'll blame everybody but themselves. They know damn well that the costs they incured were totally unnecessary. I guess they can use the costs of development as part of thier complaint, while pointing thier finger at some 12 year old minor who made a copy of his own (bought and paid for) DVD! Yet they still manage to make money! I guess they think that proscecuting minors for piracy is good business! LOL!
