Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on headed for Oz
With the PlayStation 3 (PS3) console set for Australia in March, Microsoft has decided to set a date to make its HD DVD add-on drive for the Xbox 360 console available in the region. It will be available one week after the launch of the PS3 console, on March 29th. At last report, Microsoft had sold 92,000 HD DVD add-ons for the Xbox 360 console since its launch in November.

In Australia, the add-on drive will cost A$249. The package will include a remote control and an HD DVD copy of Peter Jackson's King Kong. A Microsoft spokesperson said that by the time the drive for the Xbox 360 launches in Australia, there will be 40 HD DVD titles available there for it.

without HDMI is this thing even worth buying.

HDMI is a handy extra connection, nothing more.

Component and VGA can give just as good an image.

that thing has a usb doesn't plug it into your media center pc for a cheep HD DVD player, isn't that what Muslix64 did?

without HDMI its a crippled piece of crap. Dunno if its what muslix64 did but yes you can plug it into your pC making it a bloody cheap PC drive.

Actually jarrod couldn't be more wrong =)

    currently...
    1.00 Aust Dollars = 0.773100 US Dollars

But of course the rate changes all the time. Try http://www.xe.com/ucc/ instead of making wild guesses.

If it's all too hard, some find it easier to remember that the Australian and Canadian dollar are usually around the same exchange rate (close enough for guesstimates anyway).

Quote:without HDMI its a crippled piece of crap. - Well let's hear it then, why? Exactly.

I'm dying to find out what is supposedly so vital about HDMI so that I can go and tell all the regulars at the avs & avforums how their eyes are deceiving them and that their component and vga connections are useless.

Have you got a HDMI receiver?

    Which version of HDMI?

(cos funnily enough 1.3 is not 'future proof' - what a ludicrous & childishly naive concept - 1.3a has just appeared and v2 is coming soon).

This whole 'HDMI is so vital' line is pure garbage.

'HDMI is so vital' for the DRM so they tell us that it is

Thats not good 92,000 compared to over 10 million console sold is horrible.

who cares at least these were all sold to watch HD0DVD as the ps3 not all were sold to watch blueray most for gaming..

Nonews yet on how many are headed to Aus but the last numbers I could see were 150,000 sold as of the 8th of Jan 2007.

(Still no sign of any PS3 sales numbers from Sony.)

There's also the small matter of the fact that blue lasers have a limited lifespan.

It's getting better (see thread the shills want to see buried here ' UCSB researchers claim breakthrough in blue laser diodes '

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/460300 )

but as of right now every blu laser unit sold has a 'normal' life of approx 3 years.

So perhaps combining a games platform and a movie player into an 'all-in'one' unit isn't such a great idea afterall.

We'll be hearing about it soon enough, but people can't say they weren't warned
(although naturally not by Sony or any of their 'viral marketing' shills).

HDMI is important not for its ability to send high def signal, I know Component and VGA are just as good. But in 2009 or whenever HDCP happens I dont think people are gunna be happy about having to buy a new HD-DVD addon just to get high def movies out of their high def discs.

You can get FUll HD 1080p with this. Just buy VGA cable.

    @wiiclone
Great article and all, but the fact that you've put on several unrelated news topics would define it as spamming which is against this sites rules, so stop.

Yes most people know you can get full 1080p using this (with VGA or component) but when HDCP kicks in 1080p will only be displayed through HDMI using a TV that is HDCP compatible, if the movie requires HDCP then people without HDMI and an HDCP supported TV then they will receive a downconverted signal. Making it a waste of time to have a HD-DVD player that only outputs at standard DVD quality.

    - You've got to be kidding.

It's an obvious attempt to exploit people who aren't really thinking this through.

There's no such thing as 'free'. Wake up.

Quote:Yes most people know you can get full 1080p using this (with VGA or component) - Right.

Glad we've cleared up the technical capability question.

Quote: but when HDCP kicks in - There is no indication of when HDCP is going to "kick in".

It might happen but then again it might very well not.

In view of the huge already installed user base out there that don't have suitably equipped displays, nevermind such things as the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on, it's quite possible it will never happen.

It's worth remembering that the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on itself is fast becoming a significant segment of the HD-DVD market in its own right.

The movie studios aren't likely to cut themselves off from those profits any time soon.

You have no proof that HDCP is going to be coming along anytime other than a very vague indication that it might come at some point, most likely several years into the future.

.....and having spent only $200US/£130/$249AUS those of us that have bought into the XBox 360 HD-DVD add-on will have plenty of HD-DVD movie discs already available
(it has been announced that a total of 600 HD-DVD movies will be out by the end of this year, not one of them with HDCP switched on).

That''s not a lot of money to 'risk' when, no matter what happens, there will always be an excellent HD-DVD movie library out for them.
