Harrison says Blu-ray will boost PS3 success

Harrison says Blu-ray will boost PS3 success
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony executive Phil Harrison has revealed he expects that Sony will keep its position as leader in the video games market, and that the Blu-ray format will give the console the boost it needs to get there. "I think we have everything that we need to compete, not just relative to the other players in the market but also to grow the market. This is something that is part of our corporate culture," he said.

He pointed out the forthcoming games and network services for the console as factors that will ensure strong sales as well as the Blu-ray player. However, Harrison banks more on the growth of Blu-ray to move PS3s off the shelf. "That is a positive factor which will play more into the consumer psyche as the year goes on, as more consumer electronics firms launch standalone disc players, as more Blu-ray disc movies become available, and as more shelf space is dedicated to the category at retail," he said.

He believes that the Blu-ray disc format will become the mnost popular format in a very short space of time. "In America, where PS3 is already out, Blu-ray disc is surging ahead as the next-generation movie format of choice. It's absolutely trouncing any other formats, and I think we'll see the same in Europe and the UK," Harrison said.

Funny that his interview in March's EGM, he said that the PS3 would not push the Blu-ray format, and was not meant to push it, rather it complement it... This guy needs his head examined

Hate to say it BR is a bit slower for gaming, but offers no swaping,I guess it evens out with DVD9 in the end..

BR is outselling HDVD in "current" sales in some areas but has a long way to go to get anywhere.

I dont care what all these people say about there equipment. I wanna see results. Dont brag about something you haven't accomplished yet. Thats like a little girl wishing for a pony. " I know I am gonna get a pony, mommy said so and its gonna be the fastest pony ever." Its pretty bad when I go to the store and look at all the ps3 games and go "thats it?" I remember the ps2 days when you could go to the store and see so many games you wanted you had to put some of them back because you couldnt spend all that money at once. I love to play video games where you could set down and play for hours and not know that you have. I'd never thought i would turn to my computer to play some games because I always loved the consoles, more convenient. Every gaming designer forgets who they make video games for. I was a little kid when i first played them. I continue to enjoy games today but not as much. The fun factor is gone mostly because games suck and consoles and games are never in stock on release day. Never was that a problem before all these next generation systems came out. All Im saying is remember who bought your systems, stop selling us crap or as a matter of fact make it avaliable on release day so when can determine if its crap or not. Anticipation is way over the line and nobody should have to wait 4 days in line just to get a new system.

anyway you look at it for BR/HDVD their messuering their edcks and its pointless, neither are getting that much ahead of each other and tis going to take 2 or 3 more years in order for anythign to get to a point where one can really claim anythign over the other.

as for the consoles publishers are draining FUN from gaming in order to push sales because in order to make a game FUN you have to put some effort into it and theres no time to but effort into most rushed POS games, nay interactive media, thats what video games have become stale interactive media,I give nintendo props for trying to do something fun but they have not turned up the polish on what they got so I am lurking and waiting,I don't see gaming improving much in trems of fun because the industry can not focus on it tis a corporate setting like Hollywood good and greatness is few and far between...

Also thats a pretty funny comment u said about measuring. You know even if you have the biggest d#$k, it doesnt really matter if you dont know how to use it. Might beable to slap someone in the face a little farther then most people or have them swoop in the urinal everytime you use the bathroom, but if you cant keep your ladies pleased, then why even bother having the it that big?

currently though, that statement couldn't be any farther from the truth...

Quote:The PS3 version of Oblivion isn't a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version. There is a plan to completely eradicate these issues as the game nears release, as well as fixing a number of bugs that were present in the other builds. Kiss the item duplication glitch goodbye.

assuming that is what you were referring to.

Is the hardware (about the above ps3 articles) they are talking about a HDD that caches the textures?

Oblivion load times are a result of redundant data on the disc. Only possible, I might add, because of the large storage capicity of the disc.
Take that however you would like to.

See Zippy this is what i was trying to say that if someone that own a PS3 would know as of now PS3 load times are not a issue I wasn't trying to be a smart ass when i was telling you this.People be quote spec all day but really they be just guess on paper the PS3 is a very uniqe machine.PS3 put some game data on you harddrive(which ever game you playing)this is how it gets to data faster than that 2x BD drive it has.

Some titles, such as Genji: Days of the Blade and Ridge Racer 7, allow users to install 4–5 GB of game data to the hard drive, which dramatically improves load times. In Genji, for example, the cached data apparently reduces load times from 15 seconds to 4 seconds.
