PlayStation Network reaches 1.3 million users
Today, Sony released the first usage statistics for the PlayStation 3's online service, the PlayStation Network.

According to Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of public relations, the Network now boasts more than 1.3 million users worldwide and of that number, about 600,000 come from North America. In total, about 3.7 million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Network since launch but Sony did not reveal how many of those "pieces" were games.

Of course, the PlayStation Network cannot compete with Xbox Live yet, but this strong start implies that perhaps the free Sony Network will be able to compete in the future with the pay-for service from Microsoft. To date, Xbox Live has 6 million users who have downloaded 25 million Xbox Live Arcade games from Xbox Live Marketplace.

i dont think the playstation network will get better than live because it is free you get what you pay for .nothing from nothing leaves nothing.

For the PS2 the online aspect was more of an after thought and no doubt they did'nt think it would be as big as it is,this time round with the PS3 things have to change regardless if it's free or they decide to have a paid live service,it would be better if EA,Sony and others pool their resources into centralised servers, spreading the cost will benefit them and us.

Totally agree with you. I hope it's reasonably priced.

Some people are so unfair. I myself have not had a problem with the PS3 network yet and free is great. I also pay for XBLive so I know how expensive it is. It's not cheap. Live had its share of problems when first introduced. I believe it has more than a year head start right? I think Sony deserves a chance to get the bugs out. They actually have no choice but to make everything right if they plan on making this "home" thing work.

MS had to charge for live becuse they were building something different than most and they have made a great online community however its time to make it free MS of all people can afford that.

I think we agree on this one. Even if MS doesn't make it free at least offer more for the free account. I've actually let my Gold membership run out on Xbox Live at the moment because I'm not really playing on line right now. The thing I think pisses me off more than anything is not being able to get the newest DEMOS with the silver membership. Why do they do this? I think DEMOS should be free. They are just demos and if it sucks and I had to pay for it now I'm really pissed. DEMOS for as long as I can remember have always been free. You could download them online or you would get a CD in a Magazine. Something like that.
I think all will be good after Sony works out the bugs and gets this “home” thing off and running. But they need to worry about games as well. They sure do have a lot on their plate right now.

ISPs and "pay accounts" have the amazing ability to log how much bandwidth you use, even if they say otherwise, I think live was built so well a minor update to create a limited free version of the premium could be put in place, hell limiting people to 5 demos a month or 1-2GB worth of MP bandwidth would be great hell I even think MS could make it free and then add 10-25% to everythign sold on live to balance the cost.

I think MS can put off making live free for a year or so by that time PSN and the PS3 libary will be a bit better and MS will face a decent ravil for online and power they will have little choice but to do it for free.

Yeah. The good news for everyone is that home console online gaming will be getting cheaper (XBL) very soon or is already free (PNP, possibly Ninty's WiFi if they weren't so slow to get the ball rolling).

people is 50.00usd really that much money. when xboxlive comes up in the forum that is the first thing people attack.the fact that you gotta pay 50.00 dollars for a whole year of service.gimme a break most of you spend crazy money on your cell phone bills each month.so please if you can spend 600.00 for console you afford 50.00 a year for xboxlive.its really not that much money.its really not

I really don't see how MS will maintain the price when competition is much more robust than last generation.

My experaince with free is a ton of dumbass kiddies and a stack of morons (you know what i'm talk'n about),nah paid much better, as for expensive 100 per year for live (i think it's cheaper now and 'm quoting in NZ Dollars) is nothing to someone who works compared to other weekly expenditure,it's why when live first started way back they sold 50,000.00 live subscriptons in it's first week and that was only in the states, the only thing that i dislike about live is there's no pay per play, kinda like prepay cell phones so you only get charged for what you use now that would be bitch'n

Quote:1.3 million users worldwidewell since the the service is free, u have to then suggest that nearly everyone that bought a ps3 has connected it to the network, giving u at least1.3 million ps3's sold world wide so far :P Not a bad effort at all imo. I have a 360, but dont think im some ps3 hater, i just dont need both.

    27.4.2007 13:49 #15

  • scorpNZ

what do you mean you don't need both,of course you do :p
