Toshiba wants to sell 3 million HD DVD players in fiscal 2007?
According to a report by the Nikkei financial daily, Toshiba Corp. hopes to sell around 3 million players that are compatible with the HD DVD optical disc format in the current year to March 2008. Compare that target with 250,000 units in the last fiscal year. The report didn't cite any sources for the target. The global market for next-generation DVD players is seen at 4 million - 5 million units, with Toshiba hoping to take 60%-70% share.

According to the newspaper, Toshiba plans to continue to lower prices of HD DVD hardware, always keeping it lower than Blu-ray Disc. Toshiba would need to keep shipping lower-priced players to the United States, the largest market. Earlier this month, Toshiba slashed $100 off the price of its entry-level stand-alone players, bringing their price tags down to $399 and $499.

Well if Toshiba continue the way they are going i don't see why they will not hit those numbers and even more.

^^^^ NO if it was sony they would have claimed that they have sold 5 million units. There is a difference between setting a goal and claiming you've already hit it.

Well, Toshiba has sold what... 250,000 units? I guess that's 250,000 down and 2.65 million to go! HAHAHAHA

Neither BR or HD-DVD will come close to that in the next year.

if they would make a player that would play both formats plus upconvert reg. DVDs and sell it for 300.00 to 400.00 dollars they would fly off the shelves

People have to have the TVs first. They'd also need to be part of a package deal with some really cheap PDP or LCD TV sets.

With Toshiba now selling HD DVD players for $310 and $250 possible by mid summer (they were being discounted down to $349.99 before the recent $100 price cut) and $200 by X-mas I'm not surprised they look forward to growing sales.

I see the XBox 360 HD DVD add-on is down to $72/$100 in the USA now - a total bargain (especially as it works so well as a HD DVD ROM, it's a seriously cheap way into high def for so little money - you just need a reasonable spec PC & a HDCP graphics card & monitor).

Then the 3 very inexpensive Chinese brands arrive at the years end (and this is in addition to any Walmart deal).

If by the end of the year HD DVD is selling @ $200 for a big Japanese brand name & $125 - $175 for supermarket Chinese brands then the sales projections don't look so surprising or even that ambitious.

We also know other well known brands are coming (Samsung, LG, Kenwood, Onkyo, Meridian, Lite-on) and we may well see other until now 'BD exclusive' hardware manufacturers following LG & Samsung's lead and abandoning the 'BD exclusive' stance to go neutral/dual format.
I fully expect at least 2 other known Japanese brands to follow suit this year.
Samsung make the Philips stand-alone so one has to wonder about Philips.

We've also yet to see the HD DVD PC drives arrive (at a price " significantly lower than the BD competition").
They should also boost numbers notably.

......and the real issue here is not PS3 numbers verses the number of HD DVD capable machines.
It's movie disc sales and those 3 million PS3s, er I mean BD players, simply aren't shifting BD movies in significant enough numbers.
Nielsen has them with a 60:40 lead this month.

    Wow. Not.

Probably not so far beyond the bounds of possibility cashman91.

Walmart were reported as negotiating a $50 unit cost price for their HD DVD deal so it looks like the HD DVD side of the equation is already about to hit extremely attractive & consumer friendly pricing levels.

The rest I imagine will be down to BD licencing.
The BD Assoc have specifiaclly said they would not licence BD to Chinese companies as Toshiba did in 2005.
This is how come the implication that the Walmart deal might be for a BD player is so laughable.
It doesn't mean that chinese suppliers aren't already supplying BD parts (look under the covers of a PS3 or BD players and you'll see what I mean.....which is a hilarious irony when BD fans try to slam HD DVD for going 'cheapo Chinese').

But then again LG & Samsung have already broken ranks and abandoned their 'BD Exclusive' status
(and I expect at least 2 other well known names to follow them this year).

    Never say never.

BTW I've just seen a comment today that reminded me, 'fiscal year 2007' means until april 2008.

In which case 3 million players does not seem like such a big ask at all.

They're gonna have to find a way to work around the format war. I'm not buying into either format until that happens. I really don't give a crap if I'm watching true HD DVD or a upconverted regular DVD. Either way, I'm watching primo video and audio so there's no pressure to commit to either format.

They had better wake up and start making combo format players AND burners. Either that, or those that know will sit out the format war and only the suckers will be seperated from their hard earned dollars.

They aren't selling. They max out at 1080i output. They can't even output digital video (or audio, if memory serves). They're only worth about $75. Even with the new 360 Elite model, the HDMI doesn't pass through the xbox unit, so you are still stuck with the component video output on the HD add-on unit. Then again, you'd better hope the unit works at all:

Quote:They aren't selling. - OK go ahead, back that one up then.

    - It's video and it that only applies when it's connected to the XBox 360.

When the XBox 360 HD DVD add-on is connected to a PC they can do whatever the graphics card and sound card of the PC can do.
That's the beauty of it's 'software solution'.

ie 1080p and 8.1 Dolby HD (providing that sound quality is on the original disc).

For someone who loves to shout the odds about this stuff you really don't know that much about it, do you?

Quote:Even with the new 360 Elite model, the HDMI doesn't pass through the xbox unit, so you are still stuck with the component video output on the HD add-on unit. - Oh dear. How embarrassing.
You really don't have a clue do you?

Try thinking that comment through properly and then I suggest you sneak back in and edit that ridiculous nonsense out before too many people notice, eh?

Go back to your little fanzine sites and try reading their little bash points properly next time.

Quote: Then again, you'd better hope the unit works at all - So a couple of discs have had problems (which are being addressed by a firmware upgrade or a new disc from Universal) when the unit is connected to the XBox 360 base unit.

    Big deal.

Quote:They max out at 1080i output. You can get 1080p from the 360 console and the HD-DVD add-on if you have an HDTV that accepts 1080p thru VGA (like the 1080p Samsung HL-S**87W models). So they don't max out at 1080i if you have the right display and connection.

    4.5.2007 06:26 #15

  • hughjars

Ah yeah, how right you are eatsushi, I'd forgotten VGA (that's what you get with a PC-centric system.

Now that they have sorted out the 'pastel colours' issue (which revolved around software handling the different colour standards used in TVs and PCs, not a flaw in the 'system' at all) it's a very nice handy additonal connection option for those who have VGA on their TV.

They're an excellent versitile little unit and great value......we'll have 600 HD DVD movies by the end of this year and more to be announced for next too.
