PlayStation 3 hits million sold in Europe

PlayStation 3 hits million sold in Europe
Sony confirmed today their PlayStation 3 console had reached the 1 million units sold milestone for Europe and Australia.

According to Sony Europe, the milestone was hit in just under 10 weeks, a timeframe quicker than its predecessors the PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

The PS3 was released in Japan in November 2006 but sales have been sluggish in the region. According to the data collector Media Create, only 910,000 units have been sold since then.

Data from NPD in North America showed that 1.3 million units had been sold so far in the region since its release late last year.

I hope Sony not going to hang there heads on this because they still behind with a high priced console.BD prices are dropping & Sony got to drop the price on this system,Like right now.Rumor is that M$ going to drop the 360 down to 199 for the holiday season if so that would kill Sony.

if the PS3 is 500 to the 360s 200 game over the PS3 with linger and die like the DC ...or at least I hope it would 500+ for a console is assinie I don't care what it is at that price its doom to failure.

US sadly watching sheeple lap up what the corps poo out and watching them steal dog poo as horse manure outside the US I have a distaste for corporate profiteering, nothing wrong with making a profit but a X5 profit earns you a boycott.

I hear the last lot of figures show them down to 15,000 PS3 sales a week in the USA now.

Like I have said all along and as has happened everywhere, there was a short fanboy rush bolstered by the boost of the a/v fans getting their cheapest & best spec'd BD player and then sales fell off of a cliff.

Perhaps the only real surprise is that PS3 sales numbers have not yet bottomed out to bump along at a much reduced rate but keep on declining month on month.

This is going disasterously wrong for them and spin with comparisons about PS2 ancient and irrelevant history is really absurdly and utterly besides the point right now.

The real issues here relate to the financial and sales projections they have made and by how much they will miss them.....that's what the serious people who help fund this will be looking at
(ie the bankers, financiers & shareholders = the people they can't spin & BS).

They're in real trouble, no doubt about it and after the last lot of financial results they (as they publicly said) simply can't afford the deep price cuts they so obviously need (they already lose on each PS3/BD unit).....

.....and on the other side of the street (as their financial results to the same 31st march 2007 period show) Microsoft can afford vast subsidy if they choose (Microsoft's results for the quarter to 31st March 2007 could have paid for everything they have so far spent on the XBox mk1 & XBox 360 alone).

That's a vast disparity in wealth and it doesn't put Sony on a very secure foundation to try and go toe to toe with Microsoft in a furure price war.

Sony as a whole only made $600/£300 million in the year to march 31st?!

That is extremely low for a company of that size (in comparison Microsoft made almost $5/£2.5 billion net in the last quarter to 31st march alone).

Quote:Sony today reported widening losses for Q4, blaming reduced sales of its last-generation PS2 games console and costs associated with the launch of the PS3.

The electronics and games industry giant booked operating losses of 113.4 billion yen ($950/£475 million) for January-March, compared with a loss of 51.9 billion yen ($430/£217 million) for the previous Q4.

The annual operating profit for the year ending 31 March was 71.75 billion yen ($600/£300m)

since sony can dump money into it I dont think they are in "trouble" yet they have till Xmas of next year to change things if they do not and consumers snub them then they will be in trouble.

Sony can still make a comeback but if they keep on this path the PS3 will go the way of the DC and sony might follow sega into the rim of the abyss.

I doubt Sony will make the same mistake Sega made (IMO of fighting a lost cause so long it almost killed the company outright).

They'll quietly kill off the PS3......or in Sony-speak 'upgrade' the PS3 into being something much cheaper to make, before they let that happen.

But I do agree with you that their gaming people probably have about 12mths left before it's taken out of their hands and changes are forced.

.....and yes, I call that 'trouble' and I do think that is what they are in right now.
None of this is going anything like according to their initial projections.

Good numbers but compared to the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The PS3 is still behind.

I hope Sony do fail, unless they start treating us europeans equally to the americans and japanese. We get a console that was 4 months late, a lower spec (software to emulate the ps2 not hardware which barely works), and it costs more. That to me makes no sense, and that is why when I heard it was comming out 4 months late I went out that day and bought a 360. Sorry Sony but if you fail in this console war, you only have your self to blame.

well numbers are numbers and ppl will always compare to the xbox360 ...but lets just wait til the PS3 is out for more than a yr like the 360 is til you compare numbers. Til then you never kno wats gonna happen.

15,000 USA sales a month and still falling is not going to look good no matter you're going to give it 12mths (which is not so far off now).

But as others have said $600 dollars for a gaming system is crazy. With the "resignation/retirement" of Ken Kutaragi, Sony is looking to get some good pub and to boost its sales, the only way to do that is to announce some uber-great game or to lower the price of the console. They already have announced some good games coming out like Lair and Army of Two, but they need to market these games big time like they did God of War 2. Show that great games are coming out, show that the PS3 is the better value ($500 for a 360elite + $100 for hddvd add on is $600 which is the same as a PS3) and to get some serious work going on the Playstation Network if they want it to be anywhere close to XBox Live anytime during this gaming generation.

GOW2..is PS2.......hate to break it to you but because the 360 has a libary of games its "worth" is more than the PS3 even as a advance Hdef player it still simply to costly and the sales show its not doing well.

Even with a few more games its still to much for a hdef movie player/game console,so they still need to lower the price, at this point and time they have lsot on making any profit off console sales and need to push profit/loss to the wire and lower the PS3 cost so it will sale so it can sale games to gain a profit,if sony had the balls or brains to do this day one there would be no HDVD and the PS3 would be doing well for itself at 400 a pop.

Thank you for basically agreeing with me Zippy. The PS3 is more powerful (yes I know slightly but it still is) and so for the same price it is the better deal. I also realize that God of War 2 was for the Playstation 2, but they had comercials for that running for a month, two weeks before release and two weeks after. Most of the PS3 commercials show it as this powerful system while showing a baseball game or a racing game. Guess what, all systems have those and they all look good and play the same. That is why I brought up Lair and Army of Two though I see now that Army of Two is also coming out for the 360 so they probably wont hype that up.

God hates console fanboys. Heres the proof....

yes the PS3 has better hardware but not 600$ worth ,more like barely 500 worth and even then thats 100 more than it should be.

as crappy as the 360 is it has games and a reasonable priced Hdef setup.

I'll take a 300$ console + a 200$ add on over a 500$ all in one beast, hell I would rather spend 800 on PC stuff than 600 on the PS3 or 500 on the 360.

With that said the PS3 will do alright and probably regain its glory if it falls i the 400-500 range and gets more games, but with out the games and I don't mean 1 year exclusives the PS3 is dead but even with solid exclusives the price is going to hurt it and slow all sales and all profit.

They need to lower the price and if they can't understand why they should look at the sales the Wii is getting even though it is extremely underpowered compaired to the PS3/360.

P.S. The games are coming, in the 360s first year it didn't have anything besides ports and crap also.

    :p

Sony should have took the losses head on and sold the PS3 minus the wireless stuff and with the 60GB drive by default and sold it for 399, doing so might double their 3billoin loss but it would have made BR and the PS3 household names, as it stands now the PS3 is dieing no games, high price, loss in sales ,games will come in time however without high volume sales of it there is no hope, they need to knock off 200 and do it now.

Xmas of this year should be interesting with the WII doing well and MS threating a 200/300(core/premium) price drop sony has no choice but to lower it or face yearly losses.

BTW there is little diffrance in the Hdefness of the PS3 and the 360 however the PS3 has more coherent hardware while the 360s works it is a bit of a sloppy joe the 360 is pretty much the most post launch "beta tested" console yet I wonder if they will get it fixed by the end of the year...LOL.
