Microsoft claims no price drop for the 360 is coming

As reported earlier, a rumor has been circulating that the Xbox 360 might see a price drop soon.

Microsoft's David Hufford however, has said that there are no plans, at least in the near future for a price drop on the console.



Talking to Gamerscoreblog.com Hufford said: "With Xbox 360s selling well at their current price point, Elites selling out at $479, and an insanely great portfolio of games in the market, there's no reason to announce any kind of price drop any time soon.

"The comment, which is accurately reported, unfortunately has now been taken way out of context and being reported as if I am signalling a price drop. I was not, I am not," he added.

Looks like the current price tag is here to stay.

  key word here people is elites I still think theres a price drop coming for Xmas logic+gut(and I got allot of gut) tells me so,the premiums however will stay in the 300-400 range

  It's just the standard Microsoft spiel.
  Of course they're denying it.
  
  (but their outright public denial does contradict the report from Huliq pretty comprehensively.....I wonder if they knew something real but jumped a little too soon?)
  
  Anyhoo, they never say anything officially until it happens
  (and even when someone in the trade lets it slip they'll still remain non-committal until the event itself happens).
  
  Personally I expect a price drop of some kind very soon - maybe even a kind of unnofficial retailers 'jumping the gun' kind of thing
  (it happened here in the UK with core systems in spring).
  
  The real mk2 XBox 360 is coming no matter what anyone says (the 65nm CPU & GPU version) and they're pretty sure to be clearing stocks for the new version.
  
  The company itself is making money hand over fist in astonishingly enormous quantities (almost $5 billion net in the quarter to 31st March alone......ie the entire cost of the whole XBox mk1 & XBox 360 undertaking since it began in 2000) and can easily afford it, I have no doubt they will soon begin to use that clout.
  
  You don't get the PR guys from a company like Microsoft out talking about $199 'sweet spots' to the press for no reason or mere coincidental chats.

  why would they drop a price when Halo 3 is about to come out??? Core is still $300 compare to $600 PS3. (sony stopped $500 ps3). yeah, i think i would rather get $300 360 with Halo 3. Only company they should worry about is wii. Cause they are already caught up with 360.

  It would not make sense to drop the price when they just released the Elite.They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did so because they are not going to drop the price of the elite this soon or they would not have a reason to justify the Elite console on the market.

  I have a pretty beefy dual core and entertained thoughts of getting the xbox but after this..no way am I paying 500 for overheating problems. The entire motherboard/chipset needs a serious engineering overhaul to prevent overheating/rings of death, etc.
  
  Until its 200..I'll be satisfied with Crysis, Bioshock, Starcraft 2, Dragon Age (Bioware), and of course all the emulators I can possibly ever want: Mame, N64, DC, etc.
  
  Xbox at its present price point isn't worth voiding the warranty by manually replacing Microsoft's crappy x-clamps to prevent overheating! Whats the point of having a "next gen" system with great games if t hey CRASH every 15 minutes?
  
  Give me a Bioware game any day of the week over Xflop.

  Yeah i believe they need to make the core with out any HDMI support like $150 - $200 and the premium about $200 - $250 and the Elite with all the newer crap "meaning not really that much better" they put in it for $400 plus.

  A price drop will not happen unless there is one from Sony simple as that. If Sony does it the MS will follow. So if you want to see a price drop hope for a Sony one.

  That may be true that Sony will need to draw first blood on the price drop but where thats gonna hurt them is they killed the $500 model of the PS3 so in order for them to make it they need to find another solution like better bundles with the price drop if they do it. They really need to restore some good faith with a lot of old Sony fans. Shit throw in a extra controller or something but its gotta be worth the consumers time before the numbers will increase in system sales. Oh and i know currently the games arent plentiful but that should be taking care of in a few months.

  I agree with you there. A price drop might warrant a second glance, but my free time is limited as it is. I don't feel that I would get my money's worth out of the system at the current price.
