Urge and Yahoo! to add DRM-free tracks

MusicNet has announced that they will be making over 1 million DRM-free tracks available on Yahoo! Music Unlimited as well as on URGE. MusicNet currently powers the libraries of both legal download services.

Along with the catalogue of EMI, the DRM-free tracks will be from independent labels such as Righteous Babe, Nettwerk, Madacy, Nitro, and many others.



The company said the tracks would be in MP3 format but did not give the bitrate at which they can be downloaded. Although the exact date was not set for the launch the company confirmed it would be by the end of this quarter.

  It used to be everyone was for DRM full tracks and now everyone seems to be jumping on the DRM free bandwagon.

  Yea its a no brainer. People will copy content no matter if its protected or not. And there are already programs that use the fair use rights to copy your own pruchased tracks like Tunebite wich will copy WMA and the Itunes protected Audio and video files. As soon as there is a copy-protection method there will be someone to hack it. Take a look at Blue-Ray discs and HD-DVD. It was less than one month before it was hacked. It simply does not pay to copy protect.
