China says pirated DVD production comes from other countries

According to China's state run media, the production lines used to create pirated DVDs are imported from outside the country and run by highly secretive gangs.

The statement comes after Chinese and US officials dismantled a multi-billion dollar software piracy operation in China.



"Illegal production lines are the source of pirated discs and to seize these lines can effectively wipe out pirated discs in China," Chinese police official Xu Hu was quoted as saying by the Xinhua news agency.

But "most of the illegal production lines are smuggled from overseas and some were using edge-cutting technologies," Xu added. "The lines are clustered in the developed coastal regions of China and most are hidden in dark rooms and even caves."

According to Xu, Chinese police have shut down 231 production lines since 1996, but since no details were given regarding the number of operations still believed to exist, it's hard to determine how much difference that's made.

The Chinese are generally considered the world leaders in copyright infringement, with the majority of all DVDs and software sold in the country being pirated.

The high amount of piracy in China is also a cause for concern among some consumer rights activists because data on commercial infringement is often cited as an indictment of those who oppose DRM measures.

  I know how the movie industry can bounce back from Piracy. Stop paying actors exhorbitant salaries. Everybody wins.....except Tom Cruise...but then maybe then he'll stop making movies. Then everybody wins!

  Sorry for my language, but it's true! Sequel after sequel! Absolutely nothing origional anymore! The only thing I've gone to the theatres this year for was Live Free or Die Hard(a good movie by the way), and the only thing that I've looked forward to was The Simpsons Movie.

  I was in China last summer, they were selling pirated stuff in DEPARTMENT STORES! They aren't even hiding! The whole damn floor, all pirated cd's. If you want something they don't have, they will burn them right off the computer for you!!

  So typical of the Chinese government, they tell you a bare faced lie to your face and then act confused when you don't believe it.
  
  I don't think they have ever understood that people outside of China aren't arrested, tortured, humilated or killed when they hold a different point of view from the official line.

All pirated software/media obtained from overseas? Bullshit. If that were true, it would be almost as cheap to simply buy the real thing, and far fewer would bother with pirated goods to begin with. After all, it would cost a pretty yen to buy (wholesale), ship, store, package, and market these imaginary oversease pirated goods. This crap is being produced in-country by native pirates. These gangsters Xu Hu referred to presumably aren't idiots. They know where the money lies, and it does not lie with dumping all their yen down the toilet when they could be producing this pirated stuff far cheaper at home.

  India too has a large scale piracy problems but for different reasons. Official software copies are simply beyond the reach of 98% of the end users.
  
  However NO one runs full fledged production lines for pressing premastered disks like in China. Indian Government VERY definitely does not condone or ignore piracy. What is being sold are all made by using normal blanks & copying equipment. You might find these with the roadside hawkers but absolutely NEVER in official Channels or Shops.
  
  Shanghai University itself was involved in manufacturing duplicate holograms for a wide range of products & software. I would not be surprised if they also have mastered the holographic DVDs like the one used by M$.

Blame it on the speech writers. The Big C's attention was almost certainly absorbed by whatever intern, White House servant, or streetside hooker he had squeezed under the podium before giving that speech.
