VG Chartz: Wii passes Xbox 360 worldwide sales figure

VG Chartz: Wii passes Xbox 360 worldwide sales figure
According to VG Chartz, Nintendo's Wii console is now the most sold home console of its generation worldwide after passing out the Xbox 360. The site reports 10.57 million Wii units have been sold since the console launched in late 2006, just ahead of Microsoft's Xbox 360 which has sold 10.51 million since its launch a year earlier. Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) console sits at 4.32 million sales so far.

VG Chartz claims that its data is based on sample data from retailers all over the world. If accurate, there are many reasons why Nintendo's latest home console has defied analysts predictions from two years ago and taken a lead in the market. Firstly, Nintendo's strong support in Japan helps when you compare the sales figures of the Wii and the Xbox 360; 3.46 million and 430,000 respectively.

Also, the Wii has a broad audience among all age groups, demographics and countries. This is the first time that a company has been market leader in the home console and the handheld market since 1994 when Nintendo's Super NES and Gameboy dominated worldwide. Nintendo's DS handheld is a worldwide leader, with VG Chartz reporting 48.83 million sales compared to 22.84 million for PSP.

Personally I am glad to see Nintendo back on top of both the handhelds and consoles in sales. I like the PS3 and XBox as well but I have always been a Nintendo fan.

If you really think about don't most people associate the word "Nintendo" with any video game console? Most of the time, at least from what I know, most people say "Lets go play Nintendo" or something similar even if its really a PlayStation or XBox they are playing.

Also, Nintendo has been around for a long time way longer (as a company) then Sony or Microsoft. It was originally started in 1889 as a gaming card company and started getting into electronic gaming in the 1970s.

With the way Nintendo seems to be able to capture a mass audience it looks like they probably will outlast Sony and Microsoft if either company eventually goes under.

    Peace

Well, the Wii was a little difficult to find there for awhile, but just compare the price tag. Most casual gamers find it hard to shell out $600 for a console.

I thought $200 was a bit much for my SNES all those years ago.

Nexgenwars.com has xbox360 @ 11.1 million a few weeks ago it was 11.4 million and now VG Chartz claims that it's only 10.5 Million so I think I won't listen to either claim, but will agree that PS3 is last!

I don't think Xbox will be leaving anytime soon, They control about 90% of PC's by means of operating systems and they want to move into the livingroom now by having an all around media center it doesn't seem like the 360 will be that ultimate media machine, but maybe the Xbox 1080......

In other news, I think it was Nielson who recently claimed that the Wii was the least played of all next gen consoles.
Yep, just found a link http://www.destructoid.com/nielsen-data-...sed-38626.phtml

But thats very impressive of Nin to get to such a large amount in such a short period of time, it took them only 11months to do what the 360 took 2 years and around 3 months to achieve, which is very impressive.

The PS3, for its lifetime, is actually doing relatively well compared to the 360. Been out like 10 months (and like 7 in other countries) and its already sold nearly half the amount the 360 has despite its high price and lack of games, and its monthly sales are supposedly increasing to the point of surpassing the 360 for this August.

    EDIT:
Quote:Nexgenwars.com has xbox360 @ 11.1 million a few weeks ago it was 11.4 million and now VG Chartz claims that it's only 10.5 Million so I think I won't listen to either claim, but will agree that PS3 is last!
Depends who/where they get their numbers from and whether they go buy how many are sold to stores or how many are ACTUALLY sold.

Yeh i';m with chubby on this because other sites say M$ have hit 11million, but we can be sure nintendo will pass M$ on sales soon, maybe by the end of this year for defo we will no is nintendo are beating M$ in sales. Anyway its bascially japan that have provided the boost for Nintendo in this, because it looks it was teh japan sales that are making the wii do soo well. the 360 basically owen's america. Europe is a little different its still up in the air, it coudl go either way, with the limited stock of the wii still, and th eleite comign out in a few days, its rele anyone who coudl win. One thing we know, and is shown that the ps3 has poor sales, because its only the rich stupid ppl that buy it, all the games are one the 360 tahts are the ps3, that are decent, and the 360 has great games like halo 3 on it and GoW!

Spoken like a true Microsoft pawn.Your dreaming if you think the elite going to make a different in Europe.Face it 360 is dieing a slow death there is no high demand for it.It wont be long before PS3 catch it also but this race is going to be a long one because PS3 going to get better with time & looking at the Holiday game releases Wii & PS3 has a stronger release than 360.All 360 has is Mass effect thats all.Con grads Wii fans but this race isn't over by a long shot.

Give it a couple more years and we'll see 33% across the board. Sony has yet to prove themselves and catch up to the other 2. In the meantime, MS and Nintendo are doing everything they can to prolong the amount of time they have before Sony has a chance to pull a 10-hit combo.

    @Riotard
Sony is not for "stupid rich" people, so get off your fanboy soapbox. So you like GOW and Halo....good for you and every other MS fanboy. I bet if I asked you why, you would say "because they rule!!!...and because Sony sux!!!" Everyone has a different reason for choosing one over the other. And for the average person over 12, those reasons don't revolve around Halo.

It's about time even though the wii surrounds a lot of controversy for not being, "harcore", I'm still happy to see Nintendo in first since last decade.

i would hate for anyone to rain on nintendo's parade because we've all got to admit that everyone loved nintendo in their lifetime.i am now a sony backer but i never even had a ps1.instead i bought a nintendo 64.before that my neighbour had a sega but i always walked 5 minutes to my friends house to play super nintendo instead.congrats wii!but dont expect wii to win.they wont.its impossible.what is it 480i i heard somewhere?that wont be a challenge to microsofts and sonys 1080p in a couple of years.i predict:
    ps3:27 milliion
    xbox360:25 million
    wii:21 million
it all depends on the format war but wii is the winner for now.

People want to talk about "in a couple of years".... a lot can happen in a couple of years.

MS can introduce the Xbox 760...
    Sony can bringout the PS4
Nintendo could introduce the..... WII WII (lol)

I can hear all the kids now screaming in the stores that they have to have a WII WII

    :-P

This is quite illuminating. I wonder if any of you gameboys have decided to join the Peace Corps yet. Watching which game console wins the money game is fun, I guess. Let the countries with problems like starvation, or overpopulation or war work it out amongst themselves.
There is another game out there that doesn't require a console. It's called real life. The people in India, China, Africa don't have any of these consoles. I guess only the rich people in America can consider buying the PS3, Wii or Xbox. Time for lunch!

Pretty quick with the expletives. Enjoy your self-centered life. I'm sure you'll decide which console is the best for you and your kids.

I have to apologize for the retard comment. You just hit a nerve. I take it personally when someone judges me like that. Especially in light of all the volunteer work I've done overseas and the work I do in my community regarding child and domestic abuse prevention. And then after attacking, you don't even consider that you may have offended someone and act as if a response like mine is totally un-called for. Yes, obviously there are more important things in life than a console war, but if you have such strong feelings, why are you even reading this thread?

Keep up the good work though. Someone with your passion will be an asset to any cause.

    Well,
I'm a retired engineer who has worked in the electronics field for over 40 years. I've also homeschooled my two teenage kids and have used computer gaming as a reward for getting the schoolwork finished on time. So, I read the various forums and blogs to stay up with the latest info.
I'm sorry you felt that I stepped on a nerve. I'm not trying to judge the members of this forum. It's more of an attempt to give some perspective of what we are all doing with our time and money. After reading the detailed discussion about which console is winning the race, it occurred to me that it's really just about my Chevy is beating your Dodge. There's no real comparison of features or other factors that would determine which console might work out better for one. Maybe this is an old subject and all of this has been covered before.
I'll just throw in an occasional comment when I feel it might help keep a more balanced perspective. I wish you well.

You just commented on a 8 month old topic. Guess elementary school hasn't told you the difference between 2007 and 2008 yet. PSone & Xbox original are a little out-dated maybe you should consider upgrading to the Wii.
