Sharp introduces ultra thin LCD TVs

Sharp introduces ultra thin LCD TVs
Sharp, one of the largest LCD TV makers in the world, has unveiled that they will be selling a new set of TVs that are only 20mm (.78 inches) thick at its widest point.

Sharp also claims that the contrast ratio will be 100,000:1 and that the living contrast will be 3000:1. The display would "would reproduce 150% of the NTSC color ratio and have a 4 ms response time" as well.

The company did not say how large the new ultra thin LCD would be but only that it would weigh 55 pounds, so don't expect anything too large.

The catch, as there is always a catch, is that the TVs wont be ready to hit the market until 2010. By that time however, laser HDTVs will be emerging and LCD sales should be slowing perhaps making these TVs obsolete before they even hit retail shelves.

For real, why do they need to get any thinner? What's the purpose? So we all can say "Wow , pretty thin." I'll mark my calender when they are released.

It seems odd that they would make a comment like this knowing that they are that far out with the production. I know that the SED has had some setbacks, but I'm holding out for those.

Yeah, who cares how thin it is when it is that small? They always focus on the wrong thing. I would rather have quality than lose half an inch in how thick it is.

I can see down the road Viagra for tv's to increase the with and girth for those thin sets.

Seriously though, they are thin enough. We can wall mount the currents tv's flush to the wall. I can see lighter maybe, but thinner is wasting r&d.

    I don't even have a regularly-thin T.V., yet.

    I'm behind the times. :(

Get a KV34XBR960 and it will still look great a decade from now. Everything since then is just planned obsolescence. I think Sears still has some, dirt cheap.

ShoeBark M8, maybe 'throwing money away' isn't that high on your list of priorities eh .. :D

I've had an LCD, HD, TV for three years now, and it's up stairs, in a spare bedroom, behind a cupboard, still sealed in it's box .. !!

    Ah well,
    Procode .. ;)

I'm with you too! 27" Flat Screen. Good enough to watch House on. I have a 22" wide LCD for the computer though. Thats where it counts!
