New LG hybrid player adds features at a lower price

New LG hybrid player adds features at a lower price
LG Electronics of South Korea has introduced a new version of its combination HD DVD / Blu-ray player called the BH200. The new model adds features to the existing BH100, while also sporting a slightly lower price.

LG's earlier hybrid player, introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, was criticized for not offering enough features, like high-definition interaction, which enables additional interactivity with HD DVD discs. The HDi is included in the BH200. A similar feature of Blu-ray, BD-Java was similarly added to the new model.

The player, expected in October in the United States, will also to be competing with Samsung for the dual format player market. Samsung is expected to be releasing their own dual format player in time for this year's Christmas shopping season.

One problem both companies face is competition from lower cost single format players. It's cheaper to buy both an HD DVD and Blu-ray player than a single hybrid from LG, and the slight price drop for the BH200 doesn't look like it will be changing things much.

Despite optimism from electronics companies like LG and even entertainment companies like Warner Brothers, some executives aren't optomistic about the usefulness of dual format players. They believe that the result will be more consumer confusion, although in light of the mess we have now that may not be possible.

Is this player recognized and endorsed by both camps? I remember reading that it prevously didn't have the support of one of the camps.

    From the CEDIA Press Release:

    Quote:One Player, Latest Technology
The Super Blu Player offers increased HDTV entertainment choices, because it can play 50 to 60 percent more high-def movie titles than either single-format player. With full networked interactivity available from selected HD DVDs, and the capability to handle networked "BD-Live" interactivity in forthcoming Blu-ray discs, it is the latest available technology that plays both disc formats.

Viewers can enjoy advanced options such as "Picture-in-Picture" available from many Blu-ray discs as well as HDi web-connected interactivity available from many HD DVDs. Access to these features enables viewing of storyboards, production videos and director's commentary as the movie is playing, as well as accessing up-to-date information. The Super Blu Player also accepts additional entertainment content via a network connection, making for an unmatched entertainment experience.

In addition to supporting the latest high-def disc technologies, the Super Blu Player is the ideal match for movie enthusiasts and even music enthusiasts as it supports audio CDs and the ability to up-scale standard DVDs to 1080p resolution.

"With its improved features and functionality, the BH200 is perfect for the custom installer in search of the next-generation player as it eliminates the need for a second player and the additional cables it requires," said Tim Alessi, director of consumer electronics marketing at LG Electronics USA, Inc. "With full support for features available on both Blu-ray discs and HD DVDs, it serves as the flagship of the LG home video product line and complements the company's expanded line-up of `Full HD' 1080p flat-panel HDTVs."

    The Ultimate Movie Viewing Experience
The LG Super Blu Player, which can output up to 1080p video resolution at 24-, 30- and 60-frames-per-second, supports various A/V formats, including MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264 video, MPEG1/2 audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, DTS and DTS-HD audio. The unit also includes multiple inputs/outputs such as HDMI 1.3 out, component/composite video outputs, digital optical and analog audio outputs as well as a LAN Ethernet port for network interactivity.

LG Super Blu Player customers will enjoy superior quality video output with HDMI 1.3 Deep Color output to improve color tones and achieve finer color gradations to deliver the smoothest and most brilliant video output available. The player also features QDEO™ advanced video processing for superior up-scaling accuracy up to 1080p, improved noise reduction and consistent color precision.
I'm just surprised that the first BD-Live capable player announced is a dual format from LG.

It's an interesting player but a couple of things stand out now.

First up they now have iHD but I don't see any approval from the DVD Forum, I wonder if they have tried for it?

Secondly there's no mention of price (with the last version it was cheaper to buy an HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player seperately).

Thirdly there is no mention of it being actually Blu-ray 'profile 1.1' complaint and therefore may well be obsolete within 6 months.

Quote:Thirdly there is no mention of it being actually Blu-ray 'profile 1.1' complaint and therefore may well be obsolete within 6 months. If the press release is accurate and this player is BD-Live (or 2.0) compliant then by definition it is also 1.1 compliant. BD-Live = BD Profile 1.1 PLUS Internet Connectivity PLUS additional persistent memory to a total 1 Gig. You can't be BD-Live compliant without being 1.1 compliant.

    Shades of the Prius.
If Blu Ray has three times the carbon load of HD-DVD, how much must a hybrid player have?
They're going to have to cut the price pretty considerably on both formats before I even consider it.

They must have DVD Forum approval to be allowed to use the official HD DVD logo.

Still looks like buying separates is cheaper then.

It does talk about an interactive ability but that doesn't guarantee actual 'profile 1.1' or 'profile 2.0' compliance in itself, afterall the PS3 has a degree of internet connectivity but it is neither 'profile 1.1' or 'profile 2.0' compliant.

(and if it were Sony would be specifically shouting that from every rooftop going, it isn't and they can't)

I'm glad to see this LG (Lucky Gold Star) makes good optical’s and TV's and this unit looks much nicer then Sony's BD only player at $500. What I don't see is the 5.1 PCM which I thought was a part of the new BD format uncompressed high quality sound system. Can anyone theorize about this?

The price is a bit high but I think we are going in the right direction.

Multichannel PCM is part of the BluRay spec and is mandatory in all players with the BluRay logo so this player can handle 5.1 PCM soundtracks if the the discs have them. The thing to remember with PCM is it doesn't need a decoder so it's transmitted "as is" from the disc to the receiver either thru HDMI 1.1 or later OR (after D-A conversion) thru 5.1 analogs. This player has HDMI 1.3 but I don't see 5.1 anolgs though.
