New Sharp Blu-ray recorders will include 1 TB of storage

New Sharp Blu-ray recorders will include 1 TB of storage
Seeing that television broadcasts are gradually moving from standard-def to high-def and that DVD recorders will soon not offer enough storage, Sharp will be soon shipping Blu-ray recorders for the Japanese market that include 1 TB of storage.

The players, available in December will include HDDs with 1TB capacity and the ability to write to dual layer Blu-ray media. According to Sharp, 1 TB should hold 127 hours of HD video.

The recorder will not be cheap however. The 1 TB model will cost the equivalent of $2600 USD but Sharp did say it would be releasing lower end models without a HDD that would range from $875 to $1040.

what exactly are you going to record with it? both blu-ray and hd-dvd have anti copying DRM embedded, more so with blu-ray is BD+ takes DRM to a whole new level of anti consumer, even if it did copy it would be downscaled or if its the tv you want to record off, forget it after sony and fellow studios get even more drm embedded into all digital broadcasts.

Why do the Japanese get all the good stuff?

Here's Toshiba's HD DVD recorder also with a 1 terabyte hard drive:

    What is the point?

With disks at 20 bucks a pop and 1TB of stotage, why use the Blu-ray disk at all?

    Typical Blu-ray 'value'.

    ROFLMAO.

Well Toshiba's got it beat with the RD-A1 for $3,400.

Actually my AV dealer had the opportunity to get a first hand look at the Toshiba RD-A1 when he went to Japan last year. He describes it as a "good-looking piece of hardware" and at more than 30 lbs one of the sturdiest built players he's ever seen - comparable to the build quality of the top of the line Pioneer Elites and Denons.

The new Sharp BluRay recorders look flimsy in comparison.

You cant compare that, the article is over 14 months old, there is no way the price is anywhere near that anymore.

Of course the Toshiba will be cheaper now since it launched last year. Besides, based on the build quality of the machine and based on the impressive specs, IMO it's definitely worth the price. Even I would consider buying one if they only released it here.

    That doesn't apply now, obviously.

Um, mate you can record onto 50gig blank Blu-Ray disks they won't have DRM on them....

The only thing to have DRM would be the TV signals coming through to the recorder, if that is the case, you can get around this though.

In fact has anyone seen the pdf of the manual cos if its like the Sony S300 Blu-ray stand-alone it will say that it cannot even play the blank media, BD -R or BD -RE, discs.

(see the Sony S300 pdf, page 6)
