Japan to get exclusive white PlayStation 3 40GB model
After the recent announcement that the 40GB PlayStation 3 would be coming to Europe and amid speculation that it is heading to North America next month, Sony has confirmed that Japan will be getting the new model on November 11th, with an exclusive white color.

The unit will be available in both “Clear Black” and “Ceramic White” colors and sell for 39,980 yen ($341 USD) when it hits. The white color will be the first official color variation since the system was launched last year.

Also coming with the new unit will be a DualShock3 controller instead of the standard SIXAXIS. European 40GB models will have the SIXAXIS as the DS3 is not expected to hit North America or Europe until spring 2008.

Finally, Sony also said they would be giving a free copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray to the next 20,000 purchasers of any PS3 in Japan including the 20GB and 60GB models currently in stock.

Does it even matter. Are any serious gamers really going to care what color the console is? I think I would rather buy the basic color with 60gb hard drive, instead of the fancy white one with 40gb hard drive.
I prefer horsepower over cosmetics everytime.

Now this just isn't fair. I really ant the ds3 controller. Maybe it'll work with U.S. ps3's. The white is really what ticks me off. It's the time that we are getting the ds3!

Ewww...white. If they HAVE to pick a color, how about midnight blue or something. Or how about a chrome finish :-)

I think there is a chrome case that you can buy to replace the black one. I think I saw it on ebay, not real sure though.

Did everyone else ignore the price tag ($341 USD) which is cheaper than ANY OTHER PS3 OUT RIGHT NOW! Oh, and it comes with a Blu-Ray movie and new controller. Another reason for North America and Europe to boycott Sony!

Ugh this is so stupid! I hate how only Japan gets the limited colours and so on even though we are the much bigger market! It's retarded!

$341 is so much cheaper than 20gb 360 with HD-DVD add on. I'm starting to root for blu ray now.

XCM makes some sick mods for all consoles. The Wii chrome is by far my favorite. Unfortunately, you have to void the warranty to install some of these cases. If you chip your system, then it's no big deal I guess. I just wish these console manufacturers could give people more of a selection from the start. Customization is a plus for me!

I'm loving what Sony has done with the price of the system and hopefully it will be the same for the U.S. Damn the B/C thats the least of my concerns just put out a few good titles and im sold.

Jump the gun much? The Ps3 had a price cut since the 20 gb was discontinued its only natural that it would be cheaper that the 20 gig. And if any noob thinks that a 20 gig gain in hard drives are expensive they should do some homework.

The reason they're releasing it like this is because they want to product test the dualshock 3 controller for the NA and Europe market, that's why everything is released in japan first. And our bundles come with the same stuff

White omg big deal. It's nice I'll admit but its not a huge deal; just a marketing ploy based off the white fad going around so they get more ps3's out the door and better product testing. As soon as my 1 year warranty is out the door I'm going to put a transparent blue case on mine with some blue LED's in it anyway.

Well the 20gb was here in the US and barely lasted the holidays at $499, which is the same price the 60gb was brought down to before they launched the 80gb at $599. What I'm trying to say is, I don't think there's a chance in hell of the US getting a PS3 (no matter what's stripped out of it) for the $399 or lower price range anytime soon.

It appears that Japan gets a cheaper product than US and Europe, and maybe that's the reason it sells there, other than the brand loyalty to Sony.

The color it is unimportant, to sell those machines they need GOOD GAMES no different color machines, they are not an ornament.

Only $350 US for a white ps3? Thats pretty cheap to me, when they figure out how to get backup games on it, I'll most likely buy one.

You dumb people dont buy this model.
    It has a MAJOR DRAWBACK!!.
YOU CANNOT PLAY PS2 GAMES ON IT!!

when the "community" fixes it to play emus, backups and PS2/PS1 stuff I'll be more than happy to buy 2.

They probably bringing white to see if they can confuse consumers in thinking they are purchasing the Nintendo Wii :) soo that the Wii's lead can be diminished somewhat.

Can this "cheap" ps3 run US games fine? Does it need an adapter in order to plug it into a normal wall socket?

If that's the case, I wonder why people haven't reacted to the price. that's amazingly inexpensive!

As for backwards compatibility, that's a minor issue, I still got my modded ps2. =D

From what I udnerstand it dose not have wi fi and 2 usb ports compared to the normal PS3, I do insist BWC be a staple of newer gaming they can afford it theres no reason not to have it since tis a bitch plugging in the older stuff to play something.

Hell they should make deals with ex console groups and get their old games to run and sell the emu for 25 per updated setup on their digi distro stores.

    Question:

I am going to Japan at the end of the month. If I bought PS3 over there, will it be playable in New Zealand (regarding video system: NTSC/PAL & region code)?

Well, technically YES. JAPAN is NTSC. NZL is I.D.K?? but you wont be able to ply any games from your region unless somenoe figure-out how to do so.

NZ is pall so most likly it wont work, plus the JP PS3 only runs USA and JP DVDs, while the pal runs eu and jp dvds...really is region coding all the fck over again just in a different name.

You only have 2 choices as far as I can see get a NZ unit or get a US unit, but if you plan to run native dvd/br then get a NZ unit.

Thanks. I checked the Japan's price. If I converted it to NZ$, it's like half of the NZ's unit price. Sigh.

How Hdef mad are you? you can buy converters that will put it to PAL/ntsc but the good ones are 100+

    heres a example
    http://cgi.ebay.com/MULTI-SYSTEM-PAL-NTS...1QQcmdZViewItem

Also if your TV has component cabling or HDMI you can avoid the pal/ntsc thing altogether.

if you have scart, composite or Svid you need a converter.
