Update: Circuit City has HD DVD player for $198 USD as well
Earlier today we reported that Wal-Mart was dropping the price of the Toshiba 1080i HD-A2 HD DVD player to $198 USD starting on November 3rd.

If you cant wait that long or just hate everything Wal-Mart stands for, Circuit City has begun selling the player both online and in brick and mortar stores for the same price. At last check, it was in stock at most stores and online even included free shipping.

There isn't much else to be said that hasn't been covered, but the deal is great for those looking for an entry level HD DVD player for a reasonable amount of money.

For prices that cheap, I don't see how Blu-Ray is winning. I just don't see why anybody with a 720p TV would want to spend more money on a Blu-Ray Player instead.

On the other hand I guess it could be the selection of movies, or the fact that Blu-Ray is included with the PS3.

So much for a short supply of these.

The HD A2 is an excellent little player, even as a regular upscaling SD DVD player it is very impressive and it's a fine HD DVD player as well.
Well worth checking out at this price.

if people buy hd players and enough of them the other movie place would have to go to hd instead of blueray. hd as good and a lot cheaper. who but a show off would pay more for the same quality .blur ray is a lot higher to buy own and operate.

Some people (like myself) might like the HD-DVD format better, but like Blu-Rays selection of movies better. And why would you buy a player for a disk format that doesn't produce movies that you like?

people who buy PS3's are more concerned about the games not movies. they may buy a movie every now and then but games are more important for them. especially for the younger gamers who can't afford to buy both games as well as movies.
people who buy stand-alone HD units do it for one purpose, duh... to buy hd movies
HD-DVD is selling more stand-alone units than blu-ray. gap is closing

HD-DVD movies have been out sold nearly 2 to 1 the first 3 quarters this year. How is the gap closing? I don't see it yet.

After xmas sales will tell you whom the punlic decided on. I love both formats, but Im more impressed on how HD ie more creative with thier menus then Blue ray, BR justs seems like a regular DVD just u pscaled, where HD DVD adds more depth and features (WITH LESS SPACE) and still shows more.

thats nothing to brag about when blu-ray have way more more HD capable units out there than hd-dvd. even with that, blu-ray just barely managed to beat hd-dvd in movie sales this week. and with these low priced hd-dvd units hitting store shelves before chrismas, things are only gonna get worse for blu-ray

It took an exclusive blockbuster movie to get them there. Lets compare again at the end of this week when spider man 3 comes out.

Thats laughable the gap hasn't closed & right now everything on both side are at a stand still with Blu-Ray still holding a 2-1 advantage.HD-DVD hasn't out Blu-Ray the hold year not even during there so call record week with Transformers which the numbers was inflated.I would like to see any kind of link to where PS3 owner's don't care about Blu-Ray movie's & just games.PS3 is a multi-media console & every PS3 owner knew this when they bought it.

Quote:In any case, here's betting these latest sales numbers will give both formats something to crow about this Friday. On the HD DVD side, 'The Transformers' propelled the format to its strongest weekly showing against its next-gen rival in over nine months; on the Blu-ray side, even up against the third biggest box office grosser of the year, the Sony-backed format still managed to eke out a victory.http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/P...ers_HD_DVD/1109

Also it looks like HD-DVD is going to lose Weinstein as a exclusive movie backer its rumor that they are planning on going format neutral or BD exclusive. They haven't release a HD title in 4 months. With titles like 1408 & Grind house movies this could be a major blow to HD-DVD.

Quote:We recently brought the question to the studio itself, asking a Weinstein spokesperson to comment on the ongoing rumors, but his response seems likely to only add fuel to fire. "We aren’t commenting on our High-Def plans at this time" was the only word back from the studio.http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/W...ion_Mounts/1105

Now i wonder why they answer that way ?......they coming to Blu-Ray no doubt they totally disown HD-DVD exclusive deal & saying they are re-thinking there HD plans over.

you just proved my point. after selling all those millions of PS3's, blu-ray is only holding a 2-1 advantage. ROFL!!!

I haven't been following this BR - HD DVD argument very much. Just thinking about it pisses me off.. But here it goes:

Both camps represent a selfish bunch of plutocrats. Neither format is so superior to justifying this kind of fight between formats. It is VHS versus Beta all over again. The only victim is the consumer. The winner will not be determined by proving technical superiority. Economics and convenience will prove to be the only factors in the survival of the winning format.

I own a PlayStation3 and a dozen BR discs. Nevertheless I don't give a rat's ass who ends up winning this stupid contest between these very shortsighted companies.

I have been extremely disappointed in the choice of discs available. It reminds me of the LaserDisc era. I will end up choosing based on which format is able to display the latest releases on the same day and right next to the regular DVDs, and just like the regular new releases, can often discount these discs by a couple of dollars/pounds/Euro's for the first few days. I have only occasional interest in Collector's Editions, Director's Cuts, Ultimate Diamond Editions, etc... I despise this exclusivity of titles by either format. Are they trying to punish me or twist my arm? Good Luck, Dummies!

The BR camp and the HD camp are of course also manufacturing all our regular DVD's. They should not be surprised by the fact that DVD sales are declining. As soon as people have a BR or HD DVD player, they want to buy the discs for that player and they stop buying regular DVD's. I used to buy more than 100 DVD's a year. In 2007 I haven't bought ANY but I keep looking in the BR and HD DVD section without seeing what I want. I've been saving a lot of money lately.

    HD DVD or Blu-Ray? Whatever...

Actually the gap was at its worst in jan, feb & mar (cos amongst other things HD DVD released few movies at that point).

It was down to as low as 75:25 and is now around 60:40 with some weeks showing almost parity or better on some stats.
(if you look at DVD Empire's numbers - which actually are reasonably close to Videoscan excepting a 2wk lag - HD DVD has led in some weeks).

Originally posted by nextgen76: Also it looks like HD-DVD is going to lose Weinstein as a exclusive movie backer its rumor that they are planning on going format neutral or BD exclusive. - Well frankly who cares about reports of 'rumours'?

We've had plenty of really dumb rumours and predictions that Blu-ray 'were gonna......' at any second and which never came to or amounted to anything
(no matter what the 'insiders' told/lied about to the gullible who wanted to 'believe' on Blu-ray.com).

Here's a couple of real cracking examples - Universal to go format neutral at any moment (since CES jan 2007)?
Or how about this side-splitter - Microsoft to produce a Blu-ray add-on at any second (thrown up at various points during the year)?
    All total BS.

Originally posted by nextgen76: Now i wonder why they answer that way ? - Because they aren't playing the rumour game?

Becuase it's an edited report and you have no idea exactly what was actually said and what isolated part of the comment has made it to print?

(how about trying some realistic & critical thought about this kind of stuff, for a change, huh?)

Originally posted by nextgen76: ......they coming to Blu-Ray no doubt they totally disown HD-DVD exclusive deal & saying they are re-thinking there HD plans over. - LMAO

Just how on earth do you get from 'rumours of going format neutral' to "totally disown HD DVD"?
    Hilarious.

Talk about fanboy day-dreams and transparently obvious wishful 'thinking', again.

I wonder what's behind the sudden drop of price for this HD DVD player? Just be careful though, if you plan on shopping this upcoming Black Friday.

Sweet! Let them have their little price-matching competition which will even yield "near to the ground" prices for said items!

We lie! We cheat! We steal!

If it hadn't been for the format war you'd have had 25gb Blu-ray discs and cr@ppy (and frankly embarrassingly bad) MPEG2 low quality releases like the original 'The Fifth Element' and 'House of the Flying Daggers'.

It has been a stated aim of the Blu-ray founders to return to the profit margins they enjoyed at the start of SD DVD so you'd also still be 'enjoying' $1000+ Blu-ray players.
