Worldwide Plasma sales set record high in Q3 2007

According to DisplaySearch, sales of PDPs (plasma display panels) rose 9% for the year and 33% for the quarter to set a record high of 3.1 million units sold.

The report also included a few reasons for the growth in addition to the continued falling prices of the displays. One reason was the "increased availability of 1080p panels whose shipments rose 100% on quarter and 1030% on year in the third quarter of 2007." In all, 1080p PDPs rose to 21% of total PDP revenue.



Another reason was the continued great sales of 50-inch or larger PDPs which rose 37% for the quarter and 45% for the year and accounts for 50% of total revenues.

DisplaySearch predicted that PDP suppliers would see a record fourth quarter, with 50% quarter growth for 4.5 million panels sold.

  I've changed my opinions of LCD over plasma for a few reasons:-
  
  1) Plasma have less smearing with fast moving detail in scenes.
  2) Deeper blacks and more detail in shadow/dark scenes than LCD.
  3) Plasma have better Contrast ratio and thus deeper colour spectrum.
  4) It's taken a while but Price is now beginning to compete.
  5) SED,Laser projector TV's,etc will also bring these benefits but at a greater price some time in the future.
  
  Reasons to question Plasma:-
  
  1) The weight of a Plasma TV is back-breakingly substantial.
  2) Screen burn,although vastly improved and less likely.
  3) Phosphor ghosting,after-images can affect some TV sets.
  
  If you're after 50" TV or more,Plasma is probably the way to go.
  If not then LCD is an excellent choice.
  Don't read too much into Dynamic Contrast Ratio and other artificialy boosted figures that are produced by a TV through processing.Although these may appear to improve the picture they are by no means proof of what the TV can technicaly produce as standard.
  I just have a SD projector TV but I am considering an upgrade one day.I do follow loads of reviews & AV forums so these are just my opinions at this time,hope it helps :)

  I really like plasmas because they are bigger for the same price of a LCD and the picture looks better on them compared to LCDs. It's just that after a couple years they die and it costs an arm and a leg to recharge them :(

It's just that after a couple years they die and it costs an arm and a leg to recharge them :(If you do some research about modern Plasmas,you'll find that they can last as long as an equivalent LCD.I'm not saying Plasmas don't pack up,all TV's can have problems.Early Plasmas were a joke for what they cost,fizzy,grainy,green shadows,etc but now they have matured it's probably a good time to invest in one.

  I agree. When Plasmas first came out they weren't as long-lasting as they are now.

  I've always preferred plasma over LCD and after seeing the new 1080p models from Pioneer and Panasonic I have no reason to change. I did see a 52" Sony XBR LCD the other day and the picture was great. I think the 100hz technology they have implemented on some LCD's has really made the blur a non issue, especially seeing as the fastest they can get the response time on larger LCD's is 5ms.
  I have never had an issue with screen burn in on my plasma. Sometimes after playing games for a few hours there is a ghost image left behind but this soon disappears after a new moving image is displayed.

  For some reason i still prefer LCD to plasma due to the longer life that LCD has.
