40GB PlayStation 3 is shipping with 65nm Cell processor

40GB PlayStation 3 is shipping with 65nm Cell processor
According to Engadget, the upcoming 40GB PlayStation 3, which is set to hit the US on November 2nd, will run on a a cooler-running 65nm Cell processor.

The chip swap will lower power consumption from 200 Watts to a more reasonable 135 Watts and the new PS3 will have a motherboard revision including an update of Southbridge. The internal heatpipe has also been reduced in size thanks to the cooler running processor.

Although overheating has not really been an issue for the PS3 as compared to the rival Xbox 360, the new processor should help cut manufacturing costs.

I was going to get this model until I learned it didn't have wifi. Thats a big problem for me so until they include I won't get the cheaper model. Plus, $100 more for wifi doesn't make sense, the hd isn;t too much of a concern for me.

And if it's incorrect, I would prefer it to have ps2 backwards compatibility. Even though I have a ps2, it's inconvenient to get it out when the ps3 is setup already.

YES that's awesome.and ps2 games look horrible when upscaled so BWC isnt a necessary feature.

Well i guess it makes sense, $100 for backwards compatibility isn't feasible, but last thing. Will it be able to support the DUALSHOCK3 controller by a firmware update or will only the newer ps3's be able to?

I will be importing me a Dualshock3 from Japan next month i can't wait til next year for it to be released in the U.S.The firmware i heard is coming within 2 weeks.

Guess they'll clear out their Six-axis inventory for the holidays by dumping this SKU in the US and then I bet they come out with more SKU's after Christmas for the new chipset and motherboards in yet another bundle configuration.

Since my 360 get hotter than a baked potato fresh from the grill, I wonder why MS is taking so long to get a new chipset out.

actually six axis isnt disappearing.the controller will include dualshock and sixaxis.

Any other rumors of whats coming out with firmware update 1.94? they better be bringing out "Own Music" options!! and Home! what the hell happened to home, its been sooo quite?

Home, will be delayed till next year, I know I'm a beta tester. My beta will end in January so most likely the home will be during February. The reason why is because, Home had a total make over, the central lobby is now similar to a park and a the very center of it is the chess area, like the place for old geezers in real parks. Also they added a new mall section (still unaccessible to current beta testers), only the mods of home actually spawn from that area and you can actually see them on the escalator. Home doesn't look anything like it did in June or July.

The 40gb model is pretty good, and it does include WIFI. They did take out the memory stick slots, BWC, and 2 usb ports. But it does come at a new and better price and a cooler system with the new chips. Thank you for your time. >.<

Its already out, it comes on Ratchet and Clank, and maybe other newer games that already support DS3. Doesnt do much other than enable DS3 either.

I may not be the smartist guy on the planet. But i will take heat over a jolt of electricity any day. the smaller the core the better heat disapation but the more prone it is to electric shock. i liv in a very bad grid area so we get brown outs and Spikes regularly. not good for me. Im being very sceptical of sony. i loved the ps2 but im not sure of the ps3 the whole deal just looks Dodgy. Sony also doesnt like to take the blame. BTW to the guy that asked about the 65nm cores for Xbox360 They made the first series of elites with them then they recalled them. Power problims from what i hear. there
trying it again with all the xbox's on Dec 2007

Any how this is there first step in reducing there famouse Gorge Forman Grill reputation.

for me this model should have BWC, 4 usb no card reader/memstick slots, no wi fi, the thing is you'll need the usbports for the wifi and card reader and other devices,so dropping them is a bit silly but I guess oen could get a hub for it.

One thing I wont give in over is BWC I want it for under 500, if they cant do that then let them fail!

Frankly they should drop the 2 unit notion thats cralwed into thier ehad in order to save costs they need 1 unit at 450 witheverthign but the trim, make a elite version if you want to with 10BR movies, trim and a 200HDD for 800 for all I care but get the PS3 to a better price V cost range already this dcking around witht eh hardware and features is pitiful!

why would you need to plug your wifi ADAPTOR into a usb port??? are you not reading anything else in thsi form its already been established that it does have wifi....although i am personnnally a fan of the 360, i cant wait till MS releases a new version that has built in HD DVD and the 45nm chip

...and wasn't that Sony's propaganda from the beginning? 'You can play any Playstation game on our system,Xbox 360 only plays some games' kinda thing? I'm pretty sure that went out the window once they said they were dropping the Emotion emulator from the system entirely, and basing everything on firmware updates. I was thinking of buying a PS3 but I don't see any must-have games that I don't have on my 360,plus Sony keep phasing out high/low-end models and seem to be just making things up as they go along.

it was but since tis not selling well they don't have to keep features at least MS is not removing sht left and right to stay profiable, hell MS is even tryign to work in a HDVD setup into the 360, if when they get it to all new units and tis cheap to upgrade older units (50-80) great if they try and sell 360s at 50$ more with them in it not so great.

sonys completely lost and I refuse to buy in until they see BWC is a main part of the PS"X" brand, I am looking at the PS3 and seeing it as a fcking joke the architecture is under preforming the games not built so well and now they are dcking wit features because they don't want to invest in it...

it really boggles the mind....its worse than MS's hardware issues by far, funny thing is I wont buy a 360 until both 65nm chips are in it so I know I wont have down time issues.

Both MS and Phony are so fcked up chasing everythign but gaming it makes me sick....

well im sorry u think ur so damn great but it was a typo so chill out goof!! and all i was sayin was the system has built in wifi so no need to be pluging in any adaptor. Who gives two shyts if there two less usb ports on next gen systems, they should be totally wireless anyways

right, they would save more moeny if they dropped the wire less, tis not needed and I prefer wired pads to stupid battery operated ones.

drop wifi and BT have that as a option through USB, hell drop the card reader and knock the price down to 350 and you still would make moeny with BWC in it.

    and entangle..and grow...and choke LOL

BWC is a issue just for that it helps with clutter and is worth a extra 50 on a 350-400$ console, but the mind set of the MS and Sony are unhelpful when it comes to things like this they would rather resale you stuff in multi parts.

I hope sony can get its act together with the console by the time the games start shaping up, really whats so hard to udnerstand about having only the 80GB units at 450 and manufactured at a slower pace to meet demand, hell it might even pick up and they start selling more than 5mill a year.

    Question:

I am going to Japan at the end of the month. If I bought PS3 in Japan, will it be playable in New Zealand? (Regarding video system: PAL/NTSC and region code?)

Yep, providing your TV supports both formats (most newish ones do). It will be able to play NZ PS3 games but not NZ PS2/1 games. and if its the new model it doesnt look like it will play either of those from any region anyway.
