Phillips hopes to sell HDTVs by offering a better warranty
Phillips has begun offering television buyers a new service plan that included "lifetime technical support, next-day scheduling of in-home repairs and a simplified exchange program for those living in areas without authorized service support." The program, which is called Philips Simplicity Advantage, was designed to "bring the same level of service to consumers that is already present in Philips technology," the company said. It's available only for flat panel HDTVs 37" or larger.

The move is intended as a way for Phillips to differentiate themselves from value brands that are offering stiff competition for traditional consumer electronics manufacturers. Over the past several months, upstart Vizio has stunned the retail world by dominating flat panel TV sales for one quarter and coming in second the next.

Surveys have indicated that one major issue for consumers when considering electronics purchases is the level of support offered by the manufacturer.

Wonder how much this extra level of service support will cost. Can't imagine they'd be offering something that good for nothing.

they should bite the bullet offer a 5+ year warranty, make it renewable for 1/3rd the cost of the unit.

they do not have a choice least not till things like this are standard or passe,in 5 years things wont change so much in 10 yes it should be drastically different in 5 not so much.

"lifetime technical support, next-day scheduling of in-home repairs and a simplified exchange program for those living in areas without authorized service support." How is that a better warranty? They are offering lifetime tech support and quicker in home repairs. I don't see anything about actually making the warranty (how long they will fix it free) any longer.

Philips is a horrible company. My CRT TV I bought from them won't turn on at all after 1.5 years, my TV should have been recalled because everyone on Amazon says the same about the TV, it just stops turning on after 1 year. I paid $250 for it and now it will cost $100 to fix the stupid thing. Technical customer support is horrible.
