Iceland’s biggest torrent site gets taken down
Iceland's largest torrent site, torrent.is has been shut down due to a coalition effort by a few European anti-piracy organizations. The organizations, however, were denied their request to seize all computer hardware associated with the site.

The tracker has received an injunction that has effectively shut down the popular site. As of last week, the site had 27,000 active users, making it without a doubt the most famous and popular private tracker in Iceland. The tracker only allowed Icelandic IPs to connect in an effort to ensure fast connectivity among its users.

Svavar Kjarrval, the lead admin of the site says he is going to fight the injunction. “I’m going to fight this as far as I possibly can. The general public seems to be on our side.”

As a result of the takedown, the head of the Icelandic equivalent of the MPAA, the SMAIS has received numerous death threats and hate mail.

Look at volcanoes and threaten politicians?

combine the two.. throw the politicos in the volcanoes.. and then look at them muahahahaha.. but seriously.. Is this really relevant to anything? It was another public tracker that happened to only allow Icelandic IP's.. the use of the term "private tracker" in this context is misleading.

I don't mind being mischievous about pirating movies and software, but to be militant enough to post hate mail and death threats... yikes.. :)

Yeah..........no doubt. I'm all about looking at volcanoes and threatening politicians ............... and even more so about combining the two. But on a serious note, it's a tad illegal and wrong and if it gets shut down then so be it. It's the way the gears of the clock rotate. Create, take, propagate, shutdown method of propagation,----->create, take, propagate, shutdown method again. Take the lickens and search for another loop hole. It's the whole "I stole it fair and square" mentality.

Do you realise that it is 9% of Icelands population that is affected and probably 33% of computer users.
