Japanese PS3s to get VOD

Japanese PS3s to get VOD
According to Japanese press reports, Sony Computer Entertainment will be launching an on-demand high-definition video service for Japanese PlayStation 3s beginning early next year.

PS3 owners will with internet connections will be able to download the content to their hard drives. Each download will cost an average of $1.85 and will include offerings from the BBC and motor-racing videos.

In an effort to promote the service as well as GT:5, the company will be "offering free downloads of "The GT-R Legend Inside Story I," the first of a three-part docu about Nissan's GT-R racing car" for free.

it's not fair that Japan gets everything first but we will see VOD here soon.this will increase ps3 sales even more in japan after the ps3 outsold the wii in japan for 4 weeks.

Even though it seems unfair you've got to look on the positive side.. atleast it'll be well tested and near enough perfected by the time we see it :-)

I'm loving all the features they keep adding to the PS3. More and more these features are looking better then what my 360 is offering. Also i believe put everything in Japan first because thats the biggest market plus if it fails there then it will pretty fail everywhere else. That seems to have been Sony's business model since they first released the PS. I just need to go on Ebay next time i got some spare cash and get me a DS3 controller. I need my rumble.

Great feature! I just hope they'll extend the lineup of available content farther than BBC and motor-racing. I want to watch Japanese Dramas, anime and tokusatsu series with VOD!

If you want to check out VOD, give joox dot net a try. All this site really needs is more good uploaders.

Anyone who thinks they were not going to have video downloads need...help....

Of coarse they will get video and music downloads, now all they need to more polish on the online services and better unit pricing...or just drop the 40GB unit witch is stupid withoutPS2 BWC and replace it with a 40GB unit that can handles BWC.....

I wonder has someone hacked together BWC support for the 40GB yet? alil firmware and OS moding should do the trick!

I think they're using Japan as like a beta tester. If they get positive feedback and reactions, they'll expand on the idea.

    I think it's a good idea... I don't mind paying $1.85 for a DOWNLOAD of a show.

According to recent sales trends, not a lot of people seem to care about BWC. The 40 gig system is out selling every other version. I would guess that a hack or homebrew is the best you can hope for. BWC is pointless anyways, If you want to play PS2 games, play them on your PS2.
The network has grown by leaps and bounds from what it started out as. But yes it still needs quite a bit of polish.
    Still expensive? Yes.
    In need of BWC? No.

    BACK ON TOPIC
First Divx and now VOD. This just keeps getting better and better.

So? I dont follow trends, its obvious why its selling better tis cheaper and people dont know what they are getting all they see is price, all I see is broken promises of what the PS3 should have been.

Would love to see what the return rate is on the 40GB units.

That's some good news... Pretty sure there will be plenty of HD contents :) And since it's Sony, they can use the AVCHD encoding, nice...

Anyhow, what's up with those people said about game console being game consoles? I never get that...

The focus of the console in both hardware and software.

As much as the 360 keeps its mind on being cheap (hardware issues going unfixed until next batch of revisions, ecte,ct) it has a clearer focus on gaming than the PS3 dose.

If you put it that way Zippy, yeah, make hell of sense... However, i don't think the PS3's game goals are obscured in any ways. I love the X360 game library, but having to send my console in for the Red Ring is a major pain in the ass (there goes my X360 presents, can't use them until the box is fixed). Anyhow, MS is not doing anything about the hardware problem (besides fixing it for free) so i hardly think they are focusing primarily on gaming either (what's to game if the hardware fails?). I honestly think the gaming part of the PS3 is gonna kick off with a bang starting 2008.

Anyhow, my comment was intended for those people who said "if i want to play a game, i'll get a game console, if i want to watch a movie, i'll get a dvd player etc..." Now, that i don't get...

Because the remotes are extra on a game console ,and before the BR players hit 230 the PS3 was the only console that did movies cheaper than the players, what I am getting at , at one time the players offered more features for a cheaper price (remote is a feature too).

when the PS3 hit you got less features but at a slightly lesser price.

basically it comes down to know what you are getting both the 360 and PS3 are fair to good players but the remote and stuff is extra.

    6.12.2007 14:29 #14

  • Gnawnivek

ah, i see your points... if you buy a dvd player, the remote is given. if you buy a console (plays dvd too), the remote is a feature). True true... But if you buy a dvd player, it can't play games :( (and there's no feature for it).

Anyhow, i guess everybody is different... Personally, i like products build with near future functionality in mind (more money for your bucks), so the more they can do, the better (provided that the price is not exponentially proportion to the number of features). The other reason i went with PS3 rather than a standalone BD player is that the PS3 got HDD (that's way before VOD was announced for the PS3). Come on now, for a $100 more, why not? I'm not talking about the HDD sizes, but the ability to recognize a HDD :) See, now with VOD, my decision kinda pay off (well, it's in Japan only, so i shouldn't be too excited).

with the PS3/consoles buying it for movies is silly...unless its half the price of a BR player witch is is not now.

Sony should have added the remote to the 60GB unit and went with 1 unit for 450 thats more than a fair price for the real thing...now the PS3 is waffleing....

What's up with the remote thing for the PS3 Zippy? It's $20 for god's sake and a very good one too. Anyhow, you don't really need it, since you can control the menus using the Sixaxis too.

Right now the PS3 is a solid player, really the only thing wrong with the 60GB unit is that the raped the BWC from it,still the 80GB unit is not bad if you can find it at 400$.

The 360 is not so bad a player either....since the HDVD units have a better drive than most 360s :P

wow Zippy, you don't sleep don't you :) (AD Addict is no joke)

Well, the PS3 is still a game machine, so yes, the Sixaxis instead a remote control makes sense. Sony can include a remote as well, but that would be "extra" (anyhow, most retailers include that in the sale). If you want the free remote in the box? Well, chances are other people gonna scream for something else, a free game, a free BD (oh wait, Spidy III), so make that another free BD (oh wait, five free from rebate)...

Sigh, don't bring the player thing up with the X360... I'm pissed that MS is not making a X360 plays game and HD-DVDs. You gotta buy an add-on (which i have, but useless until i get my replacement). Not only more wiring, more space and another plug too... Oh, the EJECT button on the Xbox remote doesn't open/close the add-on tray, but the X360's tray. Now, that's weird...

the HDVD add on works on XP you might need better software to run it but I know you can run it I set a friends stuff up,only took 30min of trolling the net to find it.

MS should have had forethought on newer tech but like sony they jsut can't think straight after all the cocaine.

the add on should have just pop in to replace the DVD drive in the 360.

IMO after handling both systems for more than 10 hours
Movie player: PS3>360 (PS3 is better built)

    Game machine 360>PS3(better libary)

Media machine 360=PS3 (360 mgiht or might not have acouple lil extra things but at this time both are nearly even by now)

Both suck at BWC which is now more a corporate to push off remakes and just play with consuemrs, for me BWC saves me space and time so I give them no end of grief over it being half assed.

As far as price go I think both are over priced the 360 is a easy break oven with a asinine HDD scheme, the PS3 can't bring itself to lower its standaqrds to get out of the house more.....thos standards being price not features...but they have it reserved its more than happy to sleep with strangers for money and reduce features to lower the build price yet not share it whit consuemrs.

Oh ya the WI..... since you can't custom config the control schemes and use the Wii mote and numb chuck on other games.....its 100$ to much.....the N64 games are overpriced 5-10$ the rest are overpriced at least 2$ and they have the balls to not let people be able to keep their libary on one memory unit..... I see a lot of anti consumer BS I dislike it some say I see things I say I hear things and can clearly see less product for more moeny!

And when I do I call BS and btch about it :P
