Microsoft cuts price on HD DVD add-on again

Microsoft cuts price on HD DVD add-on again
Dropping the price for the second time in recent months, Microsoft has slashed the price of its HD DVD add-on player for the Xbox 360 by 30 percent to $130 USD.

As of today, the price drop was seen at giant retailers Amazon and Toys-R-Us. Each unit sold comes with five free HD DVD movies, a media remote, and "King Kong" as well.

The add-on had its price dropped from $199 USD to $179 USD in the fall and the new cut most likely reflects continued drops in manufacturing costs.

Yeah but Microsoft aren't really supporting HD DVD.

    Michael Bay said so
(and then the Blu-ray fanclub all piled in to completely and utterly agree with his view on that).

    LMAO.

How are they not supporting it? They obviously have the drive available, and they are not a movie studio in the first place.

I think the arrival of the Venturer HD DVD player had as much to do with this price cut as anything else.

You just can't have the add-on priced almost as much as a "standalone" player.

    son of a B

So, I was peeking around Amazon and noticed no price drop for the Xbox HD-DVD add-on, but did see a BOGO sale on a bunch of "older" Blu-Ray movies. Hmm... I sense a hot selling HD-DVD exclusive around the corner. Could this be BD Camp's way to "bolster" sales and downplay the significance in sales Bourne Ultimatum will have when it smashes the record previously set by Transformers?

i would actually argue that the drop in price is a result of the poor add-on sales, the recent drastic drop in standalone players we saw a couple weeks ago, and the holiday season quickly approaching. hardly anything to do with manufacturing costs, and i'll elaborate on this.

there are roughly atleast 7 million or so 360s in the US while add-on sales are somewhere around the 150-200k mark.? i could be off a little on the numbers but we'll play with those.

basically that means that not even 3% of all users bought the add-on according to those numbers. the market for the add-on is already condensed as its primary target would be that of 360 owners, so given the poor adoption by consumers i'd argue the drop in price is primarly the result of poor demand.

add-ons don't generally sell too well to begin with and given that a consumer could pick up a standalone unit not even 2 weeks ago for a price that was cheaper than the now reduced add-on price, it was only a matter of time before someone did something. the add-on also looks tacky especially under your tv IMO.

    of course
anyone looking to buy a 'console'-type gift is SOL with the wii, maybe doesn't want to spend 399 on the PS3 and then remembers the recipient might already own a 360, they might figure 'eh buy this and transformers HD DVD and thats that'
    i like price drops =D
