Europe to get 80GB PlayStation 3?
In its "HD World" newsletter, Sony has revealed that Europe will be seeing a new model of the PlayStation 3.

The newsletter implies that the European market will see a larger hard drive capacity model. "In Western Europe by the end of 2008, "Understanding & Solutions" predicts average player prices (as opposed to entry level model pricing), for HD DVD and Blu-ray of $275 and $475 respectively, with the yet-to-be-launched European 80GB PS3 retailing at just over $500."

Currently, only the stripped down 40GB, and 60GB units are available in Europe. This brings fuel back to the ongoing rumors that the 60GB model will be phased out in favor of a larger capacity model.

A Sony Europe spokesperson did however, deny what the newsletter stated. "The HD World newsletter is written by external sources, and the report quoted is from independent analysts. There is absolutely no 80GB version of the PS3 planned for Europe in 2008".

Lets hops sony will offer a fair deal and not just charge an extra £100 for a slow, bottom of the range, seagate 5400rpm with average seektime of 12ms, notebook hard drive that retails £25 but what consumers don't realise is that the 40 gig to sony costs no different to the 60 gig to the 80 gig, but its a great marketing ploy as the only big difference sony can make to the ps3 is hard drive size without incurring extra cost, and as technology moves forward (standard HD in notebooks now is 120gig+) the smaller, obsolete hard drives become hard to source, and force manufactures to use larger drives.

imho, if you really need a ps3 purchase the cheapest one possible then get the hard drive of your choice saving you loads of bucks as its real easy to install.

major selling point for the 80gb over the 40gb here in the US is backwards compatability which isnt available on the 40gb model, to me that alone is worth the extra $100. iv got hundreds of ps2 games floating around my house somewhere

Why do they just not put hard drive varying from 100 to 200gigs in the ps3 and let the user be happy with enough storage for everything.

Good question. I'd prefer it that way too. They thought they were appealing to everyone with four models. The 60g IMO was the best of everything in one. Shoulda bought that one at launch.

Its jsut simpler to sale in volume with a low end HDD, would be nice if they sold a PS3 minus a HDD but they would only lower the price 20-50$ and its not worth their time to do it, MS can play with the price a bit more...since the 360 is made of glue and tape :P
