US to see larger HDD Sony PlayStation 3?
Early last week it was reported that Best Buy would no longer be carrying the 80GB model Sony PlayStation 3 due to a discontinue in supply. If the memo is true and applicable to other North American retailers than that will mean that only one model of the PS3 will exist in the North American market, the BWC-crippled 40GB version. An insider has said however that a new model could be coming, and soon.

“Sony is, in fact, phasing out the 80GB PS3. Sony is going to stay with the two-SKU approach though, and the prices look to stay the same,”
the source said. “The Spiderman 3 pack-in will disappear as well once the 80GB unit is gone. In order to maintain a similar value proposition to the 80GB/Spiderman 3 bundle, I expect to see a storage increase to 120 or 160GB at the same price point, plus the new Dual-Shock 3 controller...”

In response to the posting of Best Buy's memo, a Sony spokesperson gave an official "no comment". “I caught up with all of the posts and news last night, and as you know, we don't comment on rumors and speculation,” he added

Not that big of a deal since you can already easily swap out the HDD for a larger size. Bringing back the PS2 compatibility of the 60GB would be a step in the right direction.

Incredibly pointless when they are charging 80-100$ just for the HDD, keep the HDD out of the box small and cheap, let the consume upgrade their unit as they see fit and lower the price on the unit.

I brought a 40GB model myself. I can't see what the big deal is with backwards compability. Yes, it's nice to have upscaling but if I want to play a PS2 game (which I don't want to very often) I just swap out the PS3 for a PS2 and play without problems.

Yes, PS3 seems to be coming more popular as it's price drops. We will definatly see it come into a league of it's own (especially with GT5).

I imagine that they supply with hard drive to eliminate any chance that consumers, don't eventually buy one (making certain games unplayable). I thoroughly agree though, that the system should come without one.

Just another way for Sony to maximise income (along with packages, etc.)

Hey if it has BWC then I'm up for it.

I bought the 80g with BWC in mind. And, i use it. I still play my Final Fantasy games on it.

I don't see the point in phasing out yet another model. I like my PS3, but i'm kind of tired of seeing them introduce new models, take them away, introduce new models...etc.

I should've grabbed the 60g when i had the chance.

That's the one i'm kicking myself for not picking up when it was more readily available.

40g for $200.00, yeah, i'd pick one up too. ;)

At least the 60g was full BWC instead of Sony's statistic of 85% for the 80g. I like the extra space, but i doubt i'll ever need that much.

hard drive size's is a distraction from the real issue, this applies to the 360as well.

    Dave!

I have been saying the same thing about BWC everytime its brought up. To me BWC is not that important. The quality and longevity of the product matters most. I want my system to be stable with very minor issues if any and product quality games. As far as the larger hard drives thats cool for those that dont own this system. As someone already said you can do it your self. But its costly.

Zippy if you go to buy a 120 - 160GB sata drive for this system its going to run you from $80 - $200 new depending on where you go and thats not including shipping if its not at a local store.

    http://www.google.com/products?client=fi...e&um=1&ie=UTF-8
    http://www.google.com/products?q=160GB+S...s&hl=en&show=dd

So if Sony charges people $80 - $100 extra for the drive your getting it at a discount again depending on whether you already have the system and can get it your self. Me personally i will just get it off ebay its cheaper there then buying from a normal retail store unless its on sale.

End of the 360? Are you kidding me? Worst case scenario, the 360 will survive on it's current fan base and XBL subscriptions alone.

Disclaimer: I am not pro 360. Just commenting on the absurdity of the quoted text.

But really, a larger HDD with no price increase. Saves me money by not having to shop around for a HDD myself. Especially since I could care less about BWC.

Actually zippy he told the truth. For example Unreal Tournament 3 you can load to your hard drive and it drastically improves the load times almost eliminating them. SOOOOO before you call somebody a liar do your homework!

As far as the bigger hard drive ps3 is supposed to be initiating a tivo like function so in that case the bigger hard drive would be very convenient. Is it absolutely necessary no, but it is nice to have.

.....installing optional data to improve load times doth not count......

Least until most games either have it or just install it regardless.

What he said is very true Zippy it does install data on the PS3 HD which make load time a lot faster & some games don't have any load issues at all. That BD 2X drive don't work that fast nor will the 4x Sony have coming in the future but if they use the 4x with this method its only going to make the PS3 even faster.

correct me if im wrong, but I was reading the forums (dont remember what site). That you can actually add a bigger HHD to ps3 with laptop HD. And format it with ps3.

Nextgen is right, when you install the game to your HD the games do load faster.

Plus the bigger HHD is better cuz you can store psn demos, pics, mp3s, and divx files.

Only partially, without installing the extra data the games loads about the same as other PS3 titles that have faster loading times, the majority of PS3 titles load slowly or as fast as the 360,lil by lil the PS3 is becoming better but at this point and time one can not say its loading faster for all or most new games.

Try a little experiment. Take a game that is on both systems. Compare load times and amount of detail. If you have more and better graphics with a slightly faster load time it's still better than the xbox. You can't even compare the two. Y?...... cuz the xbox doesn't have all the detail the PS3 has due to the lack of disc space. You can argue it all day but the reality is that the ps3 is and always will be faster. More games will come out with the hard drive option and you need the space in order to be able to play them.

On some games, this issue will get worse in time, but on some PS3 titles load tiems are a pain, it just adds to the issues the PS3 has.

It just shows the lack of polish in the system, at least tis not starting to go down hill, he 360is going to have a worse time as things go on and the PS3 should be up to speed by mid/late 09.

I here the reason for the upgrade is there will be a software update
that will turn the PS3 into a DVR for movies. Thats why the increase
in size is nessasary. I have been waiting for price to drop to get
one but if this is the case I'll be getting the new one when it gets
    released.
