Slim PlayStation 3 coming?

Slim PlayStation 3 coming?
According to T3 magazine, Sony is planning to release a new slimmer, redesigned PlayStation 3 console.

In the report, a source has said that the new updated design will be smaller, lighter and may contain a 160GB HDD. There have been other rumors recently claiming PS3s with larger capacity HDDs are coming but this latest rumor seems a bit far-fetched, considering how young the PS3 is.

Sony, as is policy, refused to comment. "We don't comment on rumour or speculation."

The rumor is not completely off base though. Sony has introduced slim versions of its PSP, original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 after production costs fell.

Think I'm going to return the 40gb PS3 I bought this week. Hopefully they will lower the prices of the current versions.

    GAH!

Why can't I find the article I read (here I think) this past summer that Sony PS2 sales are still so strong they were planning to make an upgraded PS2 with some PS3 like features (i.e. on board internal flash drive, Memory stick reader, six axis control, and an XMB similar to PSP/PS3) as a low-end gaming unit to compete with the Wii. A sort of PS3 lite almost. The article was fascinating to read. But I believe was also a "definite maybe" that Sony was also calling a rumor but had some small details that leaned more toward fact.

I think reading this and also that other article i read about the new PS2 kinda makes it seem like something is going on but they are not going to say just yet. I know i would take a PS2 with those options i said above for $199 any day. They would have a huge hit that could still turn profit. And with the huge PS2 library and new games still coming out...they'd crush Nintendo.

I can see the rumor on a PS3 with rumble & 120-160 HD being true but its to early to look for a slim PS3 i m thinkink in 2 years at lease before we see a slim version.

Agree with NexGen76, at least 2-3 years till a slim one comes out.

I can see it being a possibility since they shrunk the cell processor to 45nm. Its suppose to offer more power to the chip since its smaller so a smaller PS3 is a viable option with a modified motherboard that doesnt need extra chips to compensate for the older chip. It would be a good idea if the price would be cheaper but remember when theres cheaper theres flaws or set backs.

Well let's see: laptop Blu-ray, smaller cell, no hdmi, no wifi, 2 USB, no optical, no extra ports, less graphics ram, less mobo ram, reconfiguration of mobo. Yeah its defenantly possible but it will be stupid in comparison to the buff ps3

    3.2.2008 16:08 #16

  • don010

first off lets stay on topic the ps3 will go slim in less than 2 years trust me sony will scramble out some mumbling stories and then deny everything you know get ppl thinking and hoping then Bamm!!!

they'll have a large propaganda on it and release it

and dont say they cant or they wont you have to remember microsort is releasing a xbox portable (still in works and rumors) and sony already released the psp slim and there was only rumors and also with skype for the psp, there was rumors and sony said nothing on the matter then bamm!!! they released it in ver 3.90ofw

and sony can do it lol well nothin now but to wait and see

    3.2.2008 18:39 #17

  • wetsparks

    @spydah
like 21q hinted at, there is also a slimmer blu ray player that was made, they just need to find a way to cheaply mass produce it.

    @don010
sony, and most companies, don't like to comment on rumors because if something doesn't work out and they have to drop it, they look bad. if they say something won't happen and then it happens, they look bad. so if they say, "no comment" they can make something and look good, or decide against something and say they never said anything about something happening and it was just speculation.

And since no one else posted it, this is the picture from these t3 guys as to what the slim ps3 might look like.

As we have seen in the past this is the norm when it comes to Sony and the progression of their products in gaming. It comes out normal then gets a new coulor and rumble pack then goes on a diet and becomes slim and the price stay the same i wonder if that the key here to keep changing soo that the price does not have to alter.

And since when did linking to COMPLETELY LEGAL open source material become against the rules?? YDL is FOSS and licensed under the GPL, or does that stand for nothing in Finland since the MPAA/RIAA made pussies out of the government?

Rumours of a slim ps3 are just that.. rumours. Expect to see one when there are about 12 months of life left in the console to extract yet more money out of people.

The slim PS3 will probably have a lower life expectancy than the slim PS2, barely a year. The PS2 worked for 1 year for most people I know and that is just a bad idea for anyone who plays alot of console games.

Hellooo, if Sony can make a decent laptop I know they can make a slimmer PS3 with everything the bulky PS3 has and maybe even better, but I doubt it will be coming out that soon. If they want to make money selling a slimmer PS3 they should make a cooling dock cause they're gonna need it. (sold separatly of course)
This is what they should make the slimmer version have:
    1. free wi-fi
    2. backward compatable (for newbies out there I mean for it to play PS1 and PS2 games)
    3. affordable price
    4. more MMO games
    5. two USB ports
    6. cd/dvd player
    7. some kind of messenging app like the Wii's message board and Xbox's Xbox Live
    8. better on screen virtual keyboard
    9. 160GB HDD
