Not a bad gig if you bought one from them.
I haven't read up on either player but it sounds like a decent out.
My question is what's going to happen with all these returned HD DVD players?

is not bad idea...but the player itself is little too expensive...even now the HD DVD player are droping price and if you buy Blue Ray player...the comparison to the DUAL player...is still cheaper to just buy them separately...

I think it is a bad gig. Who among those who paid $300~$500+ for (say) a Toshiba HD-DVD player is going to return it for a crummy hundred bucks, then still shell out another $700 ~ + to get a blu ray hybrid from Future Shop? Only those with very, very deep pockets.
If you *did* buy an HD-DVD player, especially a price-marked-down one, I'd hang on to it. It beats the pants off any similarly-priced *regular* DVD player, has a hell of a LOT better build quality than anything the mass-market DVD players have to offer, and they all have upconverting capability built right in.
Offnote: I think our local Walmart store needs to wake up and smell the coffee. I was in their store today, and their selection of HD-DVD discs was priced WAY up there, on-even-par with their selection of Blu Ray titles, ie: everything was priced at $30+.
Bloody ridiculous at this point.

Methinks this is just Future Shop's bum way of flogging-off their current remaining stock of dual-format players (which they can't get rid of fast enough). Nobody really wants a dual-format player these days, and to shell-out all the extra $$$ which buying a dual-format player means.
(Their sales reps remind me of used-car-salesmen).

Meh... It's not good or bad. It really depends on how many HD-DVD movies you have. Obviously if you have a lot and want to continue to by HD movies[on BR] then it's not too bad.
Better then nothing...
BTW I think FS is a great store. Yes their stuff is overpriced regularly(not as bad as BB) but when they have sales, they have sales. I bought a 1TB EXT HDD doorcrasher for only $190 including taxes... That was probably one the best deals I've gotten besides when I bought my Sharp from them. I still haven't found anything cheaper :D

I believe the only thing that Future Shop is donating to with their "Amnesty Deal" is their own bottom line, by getting rid of their bum, overpriced, undesireable dual-format stock. Otherwise, they'd be making the same offer for dedicated, single-format blu ray players, of which they presently have NONE.

They tried to 'pretend' that this was a rare, "super-deal" only available for a few days, and that X-amount of these drives would be in each store for only a short time.
When I got to the store, they had a shelf *loaded* with them, and not one week later they were replaced with 380-gig models for the same price, from the same manufacturer. (ComStar).
So much for Future Shop's "deals".

OK, Future Shop now has, as of this date & time, Sunday, March 09, 4:00 am Atlantic time, 6 dedicated Blu-Ray players on their Canadian website. At least, this is the first time I have seen them there.
At the time of their 'Amnesty' offer they had none on their website. Also, the news item here makes no mention about Future Shop allowing you to trade-in your HD-DVD player for $100 credit on a blu-ray-only player.
(Their blu ray player prices will just *kill* you though!) :-(

If a person has deep enough pockets to by a Brand new, unestablished HD technology, then should have enough money to purchase a blu-ray player.
Everyone should know in 2008 NOT to buy any brand new technology that comes out, as it is ALWAYS overpriced due to demand, and contains many bugs, and does not have any 3rd party support.
Anyone who bought a HD player knew it was a gamble and should of saw this comming.
And it doesnt take much brain power to have predicted the Blu-ray would of won the battle. Just based soley on the fact that SONY playstation 3s come equiped with it already, which means Millions of homes will already have a Blu-ray player. If blu ray lost the battle, the ps3 would still retain its value as a gaming system.

If they are willing to give you $100 for the HDDVD player, then I wonder if that was the real cost. It seems kinda funny that they would allow themselves to loose money on the exchange. These companies don't do anything out of the goodness of their own hearts. EVERYTHING has money attached to it..

Not only is this a cr@ppy deal but anyone who has collected many of the exclusive HD DVD movies is taking a real chance on betting those movies are all going to appear on Blu-ray at all, nevermind having to wait who knows how long for that to happen sometime if it's even happening at all.

They are going to try to get rid of all of them. They'll make more money selling the dual formats for $100 less, because they will get a majority of their money back vs. nothing. If they wait too much longer, the new Blu-Ray's will be out, and no one will want an out-dated overpriced machine. Then they will just sit on the shelves. Also, they may get a tax credit for donating to the Boys and Girls Clubs (possibly more than the $100 each that they credit you for the old one).
Car salesmen, damn right. It's like they are selling you a car that they aren't going to make parts for anymore.

I came oh, OH! so close to buying a Sharp 37" Aquos LCD 1080p HD-TV from them last week. (I couldn't <really> "afford" it if I was sensible, but I would have paid for the dang thing anyway - I have the cash).
Trouble is, they only had two left and both of those were demonstrator models, 3 MONTHS OLD, and they still wanted full retail price for them. I asked what 'demo' meant. Well, it meant that the tvs were turned on each day when the store opened, and ran non-stop ALL day long till the store closed.
FOR THREE SOLID MONTHS.
I asked for a possible discount on one of them. Maybe just a few bucks. He said, "I'll have to check. I'll call you back." He never did.
So, Frig 'Em.
(And don't you just love how they constantly badger you to buy the in-store 'extended warranties' and try to dump these "Mail-In-Rebate" offers on you?) What a racket!

What a racket!Yeah, that's the same as Best Buy and Circuit City. A lot of the open box items are demos. They have to get rid of them somehow. Some of their models are up for 1 year running 18 hours a day, and get really beat up by the little kids walking around while the parents shop. Those are not wise investments. Also, some of the open box items are acually defective returns that their service centers have fixed, and they sell them as open box items. This doesn't seem right to me. They should have a refurbished sticker on them if they have been repaired.
