PS3 finds its rumble with DualShock 3

PS3 finds its rumble with DualShock 3
Owners of the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) console can enjoy rumble technology now with the DualShock 3 controller announced at the Tokyo Game Show last year and released in Japan on November 11th. Scheduled for release in the United States on April 15th, the DualShock 3 is arriving at some stores already who have permission to sell the item immediately after receiving it.

The DualShock 3 costs $54.99, which is $5 more than the SIXAXIS currently goes for. A Sony representative told MTV that the SIXAXIS controller will not be available after it's completely sold through at retail, expected to be around summer. The U.S. release targeted the arrival of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, one of the most anticipated games for the PS3 platform.

Sony will change its PS3 model bundles to include a DualShock 3 controller instead of a SIXAXIS controller within the next few months. Additionally, the Metal Gear Solid 4 package will include the high-anticipated Title, an 80GB PlayStation 3 (PS3) console and a controller.

Um... 55 bucks falls short of 80 by about 25$.

If you think about it.. its still cheaper than a 360 controller with comparable specs (i.e. rechargable battery). But the 360 still doesn't have the motion sensing.

I've had mine for about a month via ebay and I payed about 45 dollars with shipping.

Well since I;m going to buy a PS3 soon I might as well buy the sixaxis controller while I can. I'm a collector of sorts.

Sony and their stupid ideas...the PS3 have been out for a year and a few months now...and they still hadn't rumble on their freaking controllers???...Good thing I bought a Wii...PS3 is way too expensive...no matter how many "new" features they try to push into their old crap...same console name since 1996...that's pathetic...PS, PS2, PS3, PSP, DualShock, DualShock 2, and now DualShock 3???...think of something new already!!!

You no it's kind of funny when i her people say "OH THERE'S NO RUMBLE ON PS3" "OH THERE'S LITTLE OR NO bwc on some ps3's" !
The thing is , i have had my PS3 for god knows how long and i have never , NEVER , ever missed rumble or even bwc. you just dont need them.

It's even more ridiculous when fanboys talk trash saying "no rumble for ps3 haha", i dont care , i prefer the LIGHTER Sixaxis controllers anyway , plus xbox 360 controllers are huge and HEAVY! it's like holding brick

ofcourse these are my opinions , No hating on me :)

I hate it when people are like."A year and some later and STILL no rumble? Hah. Stupid Sony..."

Rather annoying...

"3 years an some and STILL no proper console fix? Hah. Stupid MS..."

Pretty sure that is rather annoying too.

IF YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING POSITIVE TO SAY, WHY SAY IT AT ALL?

Nobody cares about biased oppinons. We've all heard enough of the MS this Sony that crap. Like this is about Sony releasing a new controller for 5 dollars more that has rumble. Is it that rat that people have to destroy the article? And this is only a couple comments in. Screw your post counts for once lol

I, personally, own a DS3. I got it imported from Japan.

What I can tell you, when you first use it, your like 'omg yaay ! rumble !' and then later on, you totally forgot you have rumble, you end up not noticing the rumble anymore.

The good thing about the DS3 vs. the SIXAXIS is that, the DS3 is a bit heavier, which I do like, as well, the R3 and L3 buttons are better to press down, X,O,Triangle, & Square are more solid and the R2 and L2 buttons are more sturdy?(that might not be the word i'm looking for).

Overall, it is a good improvement over the SIXAXIS, but nothing to go bananas for.

BTW, DSWarrior : Change is not always good. Why change something that everyone loves? You saw how pissed off everyone was when Sony released the 'boomerang' controller for the PS3. And your complaining about the names? PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP? It's just a name, and if a name is really going to effect your purchase of something, then I just don't know what to tell you.

ugh...talking consoles is like politics..theyres always a few people that are like ZOMG THIS IS WHATS WRONG IDIOTS
i'd like to /sage my way through this one, but i don't think it will be over that easily.

So the news! PS3 has got DS3. just feel good, people didn't complain when it was PS2 or DS2. people that are mentioning the name i think have a little fanboyism to whatever console they have, simply because they'll take a different console with a different shape with almost exactly the same sh!t in it just because it is soooo different.
IMO the PS3 is a beast. you don't see XBOX360 running Linux or people buying Wiis in mass amounts to fund research. i mean hell, you know, a console is made for playing games. but seriously, we're on the verge of another revolution, just like when GTA3 came out lol

ahh i won't b!tch about the flaws of the other systems, i mean hell, until the PS3 gets hacked, i'm sticking with my PC...
but great news. Rumble is nice.

• i1der

Personally i like Xbox360 controller better... i'm a sony fan all the way... Its just that it haven't been hack yet... and i been playing 360 everyday, and i got to say they really got the best controller, but the most expansive comparing with specs, no motion, not rechargeable... still, the way they put the triggers and how the analog is so comfortable to use, ds3 and 6Xs can't beat these two things but nothing is perfect. Thats great that DS3 will be available soon... People happen to forget that MS did the same with xbox (original), but that was a really major fix, its was so huge!!!!Almost bigger then ps2 slim

Anyways... for now PS3 just a dust catcher, Wii for party's only, Xbox360 a everyday console. BTW PSP Rocks! Best system ever made!

• xnonsuchx

Wow! So many fanboys are just ridiculously sad...and that's not an exaggeration. :-)

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is...I never even cared for rumble on the PS2 and often wanted to be able to disable it. As far as it taking a while, Sony didn't do it originally because of the battery drain to have the rumble effect, so it took a while to figure out how to implement it so that the controller doesn't have to be recharged every 30-45 mins. Would those upset about that rather have waiting for Sony to wait another year or so to release the PS3 just for the rumble?

Every system has its good and bad and none is going to be perfect, so just enjoy whichever pleases you most.

5.4.2008 05:25 #10

• D00mer

Who even needs that "RUMBLE" ? I always trun it off...

And I think snes or orginal ps1 controller (no RUMBLEs and other shit) are best...

5.4.2008 07:30 #11

• burnin1

So the Dualshock 3 is still gonna have motion capabilities?

Ya the sixaxis controller is great, its light and seems to fly thru the air when I get p.o. playin a fps. XD

Your name suggests to me that you are a Nintendo DS owner, is that right? What about the...

- Game Boy
- Game Boy Pocket
- Game Boy Light
- Game Boy Color
- Game Boy Advance
- Game Boy Advance SP
- Game Boy Micro

Did I miss any? So it was on their 8th generation hendheld that Nintendo finally decided to let go of the "Game Boy" logo. I guess we can look forward to PS4, PS5, PS6 and PS7 then. Maybe then Sony will be competitive enough with Nintendo and you may consider a purchase. Oh, that's right you said it's too expensive... I guess pocket money isn't a lucrative paying industry.

DSWarrior, just to reference your statement of...

"PS3 is way too expensive...no matter how many "new" features they try to push into their old crap".

The PS3 is the most fully equipped entertainment machine on the market. You are probably too naive to understand half of what the PS3 is capable of. So please keep your negative comments to yourself, or go post them on the DS forum.

I'm glad it has rumble now...and I'me even more happy that the controller will be heavier. Too bad I purchased an extra regular sixaxis when I got my PS3 8 months ago.

As for the X-Box/Wii fanboys....I don't understand what there is to complain about. You are just nitpicking....

5.4.2008 10:53 #15

• lxfactor

okay. i have a few cents. lol. first its new heavier and more sturdy? thats a good thing. its a new controller.. dont buy it if you dont want it. simple. i personally turn rumble off during online play.. because it can leave u with inaccurate shots (FPS). but games like resident evil.. the rumble adds and extra realness*. i remember what i was a kid i played resident evil 3.. and when the dogs jumped out and the controller rumbled i always got scared. but never the less it was a pretty good feature.. and as far as the name goes...
we had duel shock
duel shock 2
so why not 3? makes sense with ps3.
also before the ps3 was released you remember that weird commercial that stated PS9... its probably where they want to take it..maybe 2050?.. but only time will tell.. MS and SONY are both here to please us as a youth to middle age crowd. no need to bash.. i dont own either console.. i am a fan of sony and the ps3.. but i can tell you one thing.. i have way more hours on halo (Xbox).. than the actual ps3 console.. i have to admit halo and gears are good games.. but wait until killzone 2.. mgs. etc.. and also GTA to be exclusive to ps3 after GTA4.. get ready to see the power of the ps3 unleashed.. ontop of that.. ive never touched a nintendo wii..

You know in Honest truth i Still dont know what the big deal is with rumble. I know it helps with knowing when your hitting Somthing or vice versa, but if you have Decent sound system there is nother better than hearing you opponet sneaking up behind you only to get a bullet in the face.

I love gaming as a whole, so I'm not about picking systems here.
I must say I find the 360 contol to have a tigher analog stick, but not as tight and accurate as the Gamecube (yeah I said it, now get over it). Sorry guys there's no beat Nintendo when it comes to inovative controls and always having the most comfortable and tightest analog. Now as for being able to recharge the 360 vs the PS3... Hey at least you can remove the battery pack from the 360 and pop a new one in, I'm not sure if this is an option with PS3 (I have no reason to buy a PS3, not now or prob ever, this coming from a PS2 owner who's gone through multiple systems). Not having a rumble feature eh is ok, but isn't it cool for when the programmers use it well in games. At least I think so.
Anyways, who freaking cares about whats better then what!
PS3 is gathering dust for the most part and that's just that. Wow so they have the most powerful system of the 3... Hey didn't XBOX try that last gen, oh yeah and where did that get them? DEAD LAST! Now get over it!
XBOX 360 OMG red ring of death, well buy yourself the better warranty and your covered... GET OVER IT! Hey atleast it has the most robust online system ever!
Wii yup it's a kids system, but damn fun and cheap (system and games). So they're lacking 3rd party support, oh well First Party titles were always the best anyways.

Point is just have fun with what yah got and if you aren't happy then learn your leason and be smarter about your choice next time. Stop this whole Nintendo, Sony, MS fan boy crap and be smart about spending your money. F*** the brand name, the Corps don't care about you so why should you care about the damn brand name!?

when I get my 60GB PS3 I am hoping to get a SIXAXIS Controller and a Dualshock 3 controller, so PS3 is gonna have a lot of successes now... its gonna be a PS3 year folks!

Every PS1 & PS2 Controller that i have, i have opened and removed the 2 small vibration motors.
Only my very 1st controller that was included with PSX didnt had vibration.
I always hated the rumble, thats why i really liked SixAxis lite& no rumble.

My PSP S&L is smaller than, and PSP is a Pocket Media Center.

They can put you in jail if they caught you carrying something like this .

Well now that I've been playing without rumble for so long, I couldn't care less... I really haven't noticed a difference. I don't know anyone who takes time to realize that the controller is rumbling instead of focusing on the game lol

I'll still buy one though, more controllers means more friends playing :)

5.4.2008 23:10 #25

• Hunt720

The Dualshock3 is an improvement in my opinion vs. the Sixaxis. I like the slightly heavier feel and I will probably hang on to my older sixaxis controllers. Also, you can disable the rumble feature if it bothers you in a certain game or whatever... the only difference will be that it will feel slightly heavier.

Quote:As far as it taking a while, Sony didn't do it originally because of the battery drain to have the rumble effect, so it took a while to figure out how to implement it so that the controller doesn't have to be recharged every 30-45 mins. Would those upset about that rather have waiting for Sony to wait another year or so to release the PS3 just for the rumble?.. I'm not sure where you got that particular info man... If you wikipedia Dualshock 3 you will get all the info on a the lawsuit that was the reason for the delay in development of the Dualshock 3. To summarize this lawsuit, it was Sony AND Microsoft vs. Immerson Technologies. This company developed the "spinning weights" used to create the vibration in controllers and thus had the patent. Microsoft decided to settle out of court, which is a euphemism for "pay them off" instead of facing a legal battle. Sony fought it and began developing the sixaxis technology as another avenue for gaming, hoping that they could still deliver another sensory technology in their console titles. This ended up costing them 82 million dollars and a suspension of the rumble feature in all products (PS1 and PS2 were also affected). This all went down in 2002, before either the 360 or the ps3 exsisted as we know them today. Microsoft was hell bent on producing their system first, and thus they decided to opt out of a lengthy court battle.. and I must admit that this probably saved them some serious money and hassle despite the other side effects of rushing the console.

The wikipedia link is here:

I wasn't aware of a battery issue being the reason for the delay, I'd love to see where you got that info if I am incorrect.

i dont think he bashed the ps3 at all he made some points that did not go in the mighty ps3 favor and some people cant handle that.i think the current ps3 controller feels cheap and fragile just my opinion though ds3 will be a big improvement.and just because i dont get on my knees and praise the sony name dont mean i dislike them either.

As for your thoughts on the sixaxis controller, that is your opinion which you are completely entitled to. I don't think that the sixaxis control feels cheap. It's just light because it doesn't have a rumble pack inside. Anyone remember the weight difference of the Nintendo 64 controller with and without the rumble pack cartridge?... There was a big difference.

You know what is completely amazing, is that I never post on XBox or Nintendo threads looking to say negative things. However, I have lost count of how many PS3 threads I have dealt with these sort of comments. I guess that's why the term Fan Boy exists and not Fan Man... Because a mature person has better things to talk about.

lol well truthfully my PS3 is collecting dust, but im playing the heck out of it. Im just about always on it, its just a lil dusty. As for the sixaxis vs DS3 when i first used the 6xs i did notice how light it was. I also dont like how when i put it on my bed it falls over. There is nothing to support the L2 and R2 buttons. Rumble doesnt matter to me anymore, if this was 3 years ago I would want rumble bcuz it seemed lame without it but now its not fun to me. Im just going to buy another 6xs before they run out. Also if they discontinue the 6xs how will you play games like heavenly sword which require you to use it? Thats my biggest question.
