PlayStation 3 tops Japanese console hardware sales

PlayStation 3 tops Japanese console hardware sales
The Sony PlayStation 3 moved to the top of Japanese console hardware sales for the week ended June 15, using the launch of the blockbuster PS3-exclusive hit Metal Gear Solid 4 as a springboard.

According to figures from Media Create, the PS3 sold 75,311 units for the week handily beating out any other console including the very popular Sony handheld, the PSP.

The Nintendo Wii lagged behind in sales for the first time in a while, selling only 45,564 units. As always, the Microsoft Xbox 360 barely made a dent in the sales, selling a measly 2163 units

According to the data, here are the rest of the figures for the week:

* 1. PlayStation 3: 75,311
* 2. PlayStation Portable: 64,675
* 3. Nintendo Wii: 45,564
* 4. Nintendo DS: 39,201
* 5. PlayStation 2: 7297
* 6. Xbox 360: 2163

    It's always interesting to see these types of stats but it leaves me a bit confused as to what ( if anything ) it proves... does it mean the PS3 is now the most popular console on the Japanese market ? well obviously not because the reason it has overtaken other consoles in this particular market is because almost everybody who wanted a PSP, XBox or Nintendo Wii etc had already bought one in the months or years before these monthly sales stats were compiled.

    Overall sales since console launch are a more accurate predictor as to how popular consoles are.( I think )

    I'm surprised that the PSP is selling THAT well - I mean, everyone should save up for a Wii or a PS3. The 360 is almost like PS3, but of course, the PS3 is better. The Wii is 'lagging' behind because almost everyone has it! It's cheap. Well, in the UK the PSP's price was 179.99GBP at release date - and guess what? The Wii has the same price but bundled with lots of other stuff... Well, this is probably one of my most pointless posts but it's to share my opinion...

    not really a big fan of ps3 even though i own one because i got one for 30.00 at a garage sale stupid owners droped it and it wouldn't power up shipped it to sony for 40.00 and they fixed it without any complaints.

    But even with that being fixed it still bothers me i have to waste 8 gig's of hard drive space just to load a game.

    I'm a little disappointed that it's always the Japanese Sales which are posted. I live in North America and would like to hear North American Sales or World Wide Sales. Then it would give a better picture on actual sales. PS3 had a reason to sell more consoles for a week. It had a long awaited game released. Not sure about Japanese shelves, but out here it's pretty hard to walk into BestBuy and come out with a Wii. So I would guess that not everyone has one but because Nintendo is limiting the amount released. 360 has always been poor selling in Japan so there is really no point in adding "measly". PC is for single player machine which puts it in a different category than consoles.

    kikzm33z I'm curious to know why the PS3 is better than the 360? Is it the Blu-Ray or is it the fact that no one has gotten RROD on PS3?
    Games look pretty good on both systems given PS3's disc size I would hope to expect the games lasting longer. Overall I think the 360 has brighter higher quality graphics for multi-format games.

    OOOPS... I think this topic post was referring to video game console sales and despite you being correct about the hardware power of the PC, it isnot technically a video game console. No one buys PC games.... except for a handful here and there. Numbers dont lie.

    Congratulations to PS3 but i cant say i am surprised. Metal Gear carries a lot of power with its reputation and name. Easily enough to persuade people to go out and buy a PS3 for a while. If sony can keep the titles coming Nintendo and Microsoft may have their hands full.

    It shows how well the consoles are doing in a small window time frame.

    Its nice to see the lil giant doing well,its momentum is picking up I wonder if the full(90%+) BWC firmware for the 40GB will help sales any,it would nice if it did show the mindless suits BWC is not something to dismiss.

    Why does the 360 not sell well in Japan? Is it a cultural or demographic thing?

    The 360 lacks games that appeal to the Japaneses in numbers, if MS had any forethought and created a dev house to assist other devs getting there games on the 360 and then getting thos with subtitles and translated text world wide (split profit 60/40) the 360 would really be a much stronger system world wide and in japan.

    as chaos_zzz said with a PC twice the price of a PS3, and every time that a new game comes out to play it, you have to replace your GFX card"s" cause 1 card that costs as much as a PS3 isn't enough anymore.

    Japs are very loyal to PS, as the Europeans too.
    PS3 have the same sale numbers as PS2 had at same time, the President of SCEE said it at PS Day.
    As it was predicted Wii fall behind and not cause everyone got one.
    It is cause it isnt at the same league as PS3.

    And for the people that wondering how can PSP sell more than Wii.
    What i have see is, that most people that have PS3 have PSP too and dont forget that PSP is an actual pocket size media center that you can connect to any New gen TV.

    It did horribly until the slim came out and even then still manages a so so job at software sales, also the PSP has suffered from buyers remorse issues so up to 30% of the current 74M units sold are either sold off or replacements for the old PSP.

    The media aspect of the PSP is a joke since you have to hack it to play anything, I don't count the craptacluer line of UDM movies so whats left the PS brand name and gadget craze pushing sales.
    If it had a 2nd analog nub so games could be ported/spun off better on it it would have been a good lil system, not like the DS is better altho it has better software sales and Nin got more profit off the start, I still hate the DS layout and the touch screen is only usefully as a analog stick otherwise its a pointless gimmick.

    I hope they bring the PSP 2 out soon if it has a more solid control layout it should be a great all around system for all game types.

    Actually the use of the second DS screen in a lot of games is really cool and adds another dimension to them, even if it's just a statistics screen or map, it's something I don't need to pause the game in order to see. The touch screen is cool for some games, but not enough are designed with that particular feature in mind.

    The PSP seems a more popular gadget than portable game system it it was not the software sales would be high, but sony has probably made as much off them now or more than what the DS has made, thats almost 6X as many PSPs as DSs.

    DS emulation on PC is working nicely now so I don't need a DS :P
    my old one broke ><, A PSP might be worth while,even more so if they make a DS emulator for it :P

    Heres the clue I have the WII is a mass market masterpiece of party games and has won families across the world over with gamers not so much.

    The 360 was first and had a large base of units to push titles on but thats fading away as the hardware is failing it maintains a solid attach rate for now but most companies are not consigning their titles to it solely .

    The PS3 was a disaster at launch and still have coding/dev issues but is rapidly reshaping itself and gaining ground, already has outsold the 360 in the UK one of the major countries for the 360 I might add.
    While sony shot a nut off and put a hole into one foot its walking it off and as prices drop more devs will chose it over the aging 360.

    The costs to much for party focused machine , the 360 is not worth the hardware failing repeatedly if the PS3 gets the full BWC firmware update that would make the 40GB PS3 worth while at 350-400$, still with todays mass market focused games of lacks qaulity I'd like all the consoles to be 130$ cheaper....

    I nom nom on my clues...or is that glue...I canne tell anymore :P

    [obvious]so the ps3 has topped the Japanese chart after an exclusive title was launched, wow this is amazing who would have thought that a title such as metal gear would boost sales.[/obvious]

    lets see them continue holding the top spot and then maybe they will have something to cheer about eh!

    so does mgs have an install limit of 3 times like what sony DRM is doing to Mass Effect, or do you only own the licence like the sony psn release of warhawk that dictates to you that you are not allowed to sell, lend or even give the media you own away?

    anyone know if there are any sony draconian DRM restrictions on metal gear solid 4?

    that is a very misguided statement as pc titles do sell when they are not made by the likes of EA ect, you know the usual fodder game that is aimed at the 13year old boys that will tantrum at their parents until the game is purchased for them, you know the type, another sequel because of no imagination or a carbon copy of another FPS because of no imagination. But graphics are the most important thing right, that is why bio-shock and crysis sucked then?

    BTW all a pc is, is a hard drive, ram, processor & an output device.

    since the introduction of the hard drive and the installs game patches on consoles (lmfao at underpowered consoles needing installs to aid performance) the marketing body would argue that they are more PC's/MediaCentres than consoles to try to deflect negative opinions because of how lame they actually are.

    you know buzz words are the COOL thing and they ACTUALLY aid sales, marketing sucks as its lies and deciept but what do you expect from any mpaa/riaa member?

    a media centre that can't even play half of the java or flash based content on the net.

    The BPI Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
    The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
    The IFPI Are: The same anti consumer lot as listed above!
    The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX.

    I'm not even going to say anything...it's not worth it. Really. People already see it and know it. But on topic, I guess the fact that the 360 has all but stopped in sales AROUND THE GLOBE a marketplace that the PS3 has been excelling in doesn't account for anything? Seems a bit of a double standard to me when it comes to "some"...The PS1, PS2 & PS3 have eerily that same sales curve & numbers so far and with MAJOR titles still to come & the FACT you get more for your money means nothing but success as proven twice before...and that's not just some biased rantings by some random nobody on a forum those are real hard numbers.

    I suppose if Halo4 came out next week it would be the 360 topping the weeks sales figures.

    This sort of thing always happens when a long awaited (and hyped) game arrives. In total sales figures they are still playing catchup. Hopefully there won't be any firmware/patch nonsense with this title. Reliability wise it seems to be on spec with other electronic hardware <0.3% which is about right for sony who have always made pretty good hardware (the ps2 dvd drive excepted)

    Still not enough stuff released for me to want one, and at least I'm honest about boycotting sony because of their other activities. I don't even d/l their films and music items.

    my friend has the 40GB ps3.. and for the most part BWC has been working properly.. so whats all this that it cannot play ps1 / ps2?.. when its working just fine on his..

    but yea the ps3 is not meant to play every flash and java based app out there.. there might be an undiscovered hole and they can hack your console and your out of luck.. =[

    of course the ps3 can't top computer hardware.. but this isnt about that..

    and as for the wii outselling everywhere.. the fact that its alot cheaper might be a big reason.. but with cheapness comes less quality.. sony is going to come ontop overrall.. i dont know why u guys still deny it.. its a monopoly.. movie.. music.. gaming.. come on now..

    i opened up my RCA dvd player.. and it had sony guts.. =]

    Actually that statement is pretty accurate. Maybe misinterpreted. To restate it in another way PC games sell but I am willing to bet that generally people prefer games on the console. Especially if it is available for the videogame consoles and pc. A console is just more conveniant and most dont care too much about the graphic enhancements of pc over the console. If a game is good then that is all you need. That is why some people still enjoy Zelda(NES), Mike Tysons's Punchout(NES),Resident Evil 1 and 2 etc..Those are called classics. They are just plain fun.

    You got that backwars Zippy, the DS has sold 75 million or so, the psp is at 35 million or so. But yeah, unfortunately the psp is more popular as a media device than a game system, but at least Sony is selling them at a profit, otherwise they would be in the hurts like they are currently with the ps3. Get more games like God of War and Crisis Core selling multi-millions though and hopefully it will change.
