Rogers requires 3 year contract for iPhone 3G

Rogers requires 3 year contract for iPhone 3G
Would-be iPhone 3G customers in Canada have just been hit with the news that Rogers will require a 3-year contract for the smartphone along with the mandatory data plan.

The carrier also announced the price of the plans, with the cheapest at $60 CAD and the most expensive being $115 CAD although the the carrier did not say how much the phone itself will cost when it hits on July 11th.

The lower end plan will come with 150 minutes of voice calling, with unlimited evenings and weekends, 400 MB of data, 75 sent text messages, and unlimited incoming texts and visual voicemail messages.

The medium $75 plan will get you 300 weekday minutes, 750 MB of data, and 100 sent texts.

The most expensive, $115, will get subscribers 800 minutes of daytime calling, 2 GB of data, and 300 sent text messages.

Rogers said the 400MB plan is enough bandwidth for 200,000 emails and 3000 web pages browsed. The 2GB plan will get you 1 million emails and 16,000 web pages.

Despite unlimited access to all Rogers Wi-Fi hotspots, many predict that even 2GB will not be enough to satisfy most iPhone users. In comparison, in the US AT&T offers an unlimited data plan for $30 USD on top of a $39 USD voice plan.

3 years, thats garbage. 2 Gigs is a lot of browsing, but download 2 albums, or stream a couple movies and youre getting overage charges.

instead of 115, your bill will be closer to 1155. keeping track of minutes is hard enough, data will be impossible

Come on my fellow Canucks! Are we not used to being shafted by the same stupid excuse of "Oh, Canada isn't as large a market as the U.S. to offer such deals." My friend in N.Y. on Verizon pays $35/mo. for UNLIMITED North American calling and no roaming charges!!! The day Rogers... wait, the day ANY provider in Canada offers these kinds of plans, is the day we become the next U.S. state.
Message to the CRTC: Open this baby up so we can get some true competition up here! There's Rogers, Telus, and Bell. Fido? Just a division of Rogers. Virgin? Barely making a dent in the market. The new Koodo (who comes up with these names)? Just a new division of Telus. This is not the type of competition that helps the end-user. But then again, when has what we want ever been priority?!

    End Tirade.

Rogers, what asshats. The answer is easy purchase one from another country unblock it and insert your fav sim card before the new Canadian DMCA and ACTA are made law as importing a phone and unblocking it would land you in prison or a hefty fine or maybe both.

You know DRM has nothing to do with price fixing!

Canadian DMCA is worse than the American one

    Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement

Proposed US ACTA multi-lateral intellectual property trade agreement (2007)

the proposed acta and bill Bill C-61 will aid the confusion to you guys in canada but do expect it to be pro consumer.

Who is really behind ACTA? Follow the money:

    peace.

The BPI Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The RIAA Soundexchange Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The IFPI Are: The same anti consumer lot as listed above!
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX.

you mean teach him to stop trying to screw the public ?

unfortunately there will always be some dimwits out there who will fall for it and bend over willingly and they can't be saved from a Mr Rogers all out anal attack.

But you see, the thing about Canada, we do not have the amount of carriers the states has.

We have 4 Major carriers, Rogers, Bell, Fido (Which Rogers owns), and Telus. And all 3 are garbage. So either way, we're screwed.

I was under the impression that three year contracts are the normal in Canada?
