Wii dominates US for September, Xbox 360 sells well
Thanks to recent price cuts across the board, the Xbox 360 outsold the Sony PlayStation 3 pretty handily in the US for the month of September despite both consoles combined selling less than the Wii for the period.

However, since the hardware was priced lower, total hardware revenue for the industry fell from $546 million USD year-on-year to $498 million USD.

According to the NPD data, Nintendo sold 687,000 consoles for the month, while Microsoft sold 347,000 units and Sony sold 232,000.

For the handheld market, the Nintendo DS continued to dominate, selling 537,000 units compared to 238,000 for the Sony PSP.

"Compared to August, nearly all hardware systems realised an increase in unit sales in September," commented Anita Frazier of NPD.

"The price reduction on the Xbox 360 helped deliver a month-over-month unit sales increase for that platform of 78 per cent."

And the Sony crew turn up to say RRoD, hooah.

This story is not surprising, you can get a 360 with pretty much the same game catalogue as the ps3 for much cheaper that the sony premium price tag, if sony want to succeed they really need to compete with m$ and stop thinking about the shareholders & big fat bonuses.

The wii is probably the only true next gen of the consoles and is rightfully in first place, consoles are supposed to be fun not more of the same with slightly improved graphics.

The RIAA - BPI - IFPI - CRIA - Ect - Ect Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, EMI.
The MPAA Are: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX.

Dont allow them to hide behind the trade body names, name and shame em.

    And now some software data.

The NPD has released the official U.S video game sales for the month of September with few surprises.
Quote:As alluded to by LucasArts last month, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed finished as the best-selling game (the Xbox 360 version) in September. Wii Fit, Rock Band 2 (360), Mario Kart (Wii), and The Force Unleashed (PS3) rounded out the top five, while Mercenaries 2 (360), Wii Play, Madden 09 (360), The Force Unleashed (Wii), and Madden 09 (PS2) brought up the rear.

On the subject of hardware, Nintendo continued its two year dominance selling more than 1.2 million fun machines in the single month of September. Wii sold 687k units, followed by Nintendo DS with 536k units, Xbox 360 with 347k units (thanks in part to a price drop), PSP with 238k units, PS3 at 232k, and PS2 with a respectable 174k units sold.

Overall video game sales were down 7 percent on the month for the first time since 2006, the NPD announced. While the banking crises quickly comes to mind as a reason for the slight downturn, the NPD blamed the drop on an abnormally strong September 2007, when Halo 3 was released.
Even after a long release date Mario Kart, is still able to kick the butt of the ps3 with it's new over hyped title, The Force Unleashed.

the wii & 360 still trampling the ps3 into obliteration with software sales, even the great ps2 is still in the top 10

Yes you copy and pasted some sales stats along with a comment about the ps3's overhyped game starwars the force unleashed while purposely not mentioning the fact it was advertised on several other consoles simultaneously, further adding to a growing list of biased Sony views you post daily while not bothering to copy and paste the whole picture.

I was pointing out the irony of your blatant flame of a previous poster for being pro Sony and now adding to the irony by pointing the finger at me for the same.

BTW i believe that StarWars Force Unleashed sucks on all the formats, the wii being the most fun but still a very poor, typical PC to console cash cow title, just as what happened with syndicate back in the days of the ps1, ect, ect, ect there are so many good titles that have been scaled down to the consoles level and destroyed than i care to mention.

Starwars went downhill after Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy was just a cash cow and was the beginning of the decline for the series, now with Star Wars The Force Unleashed, it's very apparent that the title has moved completely away from the great PC title it once was to a cash cow made for the consoles that sucks beyond belief.

Don't try to miss quote me to pull me into your pathetic console, i hate ps3, i hate m$ bull crud, go away little boy, get back to infants.

I love how Nintendo is not doing anything over the top and they have still lead the rest in the market and the rest are updating and upgrading things to their hardware to keep up.

So the Wii is trampling the PS3 but not the 360...Hhhmmm, Oookay -_-

But while we are on the topic of console sales in this thread

Xbox 360 Price Cut Hardly Hindering PS3 Sales

Quote:When Microsoft announced its new Xbox 360 pricing scheme in September, most industry experts agreed that the price cuts would have two effects:

    1. It would increase the sales for Xbox 360 hardware, and
    2. It would decrease the sales of its competitors, mainly Sony's PlayStation 3

Our data indicates, however, that a price cut from either system plays a minimal role in affecting the others' sales, with the most recent example being the September 2008 price cut by Microsoft.

While Xbox 360 weekly sales jumped by 42 percent, it played no role in hindering PlayStation 3 sales, which actually saw a small (.1 percent) increase.

In the same respect, looking back to last year, the PlayStation 3 had a 100 percent increase in weekly sales following its July 2007 price cut, but was of no nuisance to the Xbox 360, which achieved a 7 percent gain in the same month.

While it is tough to conclude using only a few data sets, both situations show an emerging trend -- a price cut for one system does not hinder sales of the competition.
So while this analysis is still ongoing the preliminary findings are that price cuts for one console or the other does not affect sales of their competitors. To reiterate ~ so far this goes both ways for/against MS & Sony.

Then we would be able to go from there. But this is the wrong place for that discussion, please visit our Console section and we can help you there!

.... Back on topic for me.

If you are looking for more Wii games I can agree that the selection can be difficult for certain tastes. I saw a good preview on the new Tencu (sp) game and it looks promising. This is by far not the first complaint on lack of titles.

I find that ott because Ninty does have some violent games (a la Resident Evil).
