PlayStation division sees lower operating loss

PlayStation division sees lower operating loss
Despite overall bad numbers for the Q2, Sony's gaming division, dubbed the PlayStation division, cut its operating loss, year-on-year, and increased revenue over 10 percent.

The division still saw a $405 million USD loss for the three months ending September 31st, a huge improvement over the $1 billion USD loss they posted the same quarter last year.

Sales rose from $2.5 billion USD in 2007 to $2.76 billion USD this year, a 10 percent increase.

The revenue boost was attributed to rising sales of both the PlayStation 3 and the handheld PSP. Sony sold 2.43 million PS3 units for the period, up from 1.12 million for the same period year. The PSP sold 3.18 million units and the aging PlayStation 2 sold 2.5 million units.

For the period, the PS3 outsold its main rival the Xbox 360 by 230,000 units, as Microsoft announced last week that they had sold 2.2 million consoles during the period.

Sony also said it expects to hit 17 million PS3 sales sometime within the next month.

    Good news for Sony.

..... Isn't this the part where the flame provoking posts start?

    Hope not.

    the system is pretty cheap.

cheaper then the 360 when it was first out at 379.99 i'd say now is a good time to start buying.

since you get blu-ray and all, sweet gaming console, and sweet high def player

This is good news and i hope sony continues by lowering the production cost of the PS3. It would make a win win situation for us all as i dont think the PS3 is "cheap" price wise as of now but then again in my opinion all the next-gen consoles were overpriced at launch except the Wii. Blu-ray players prices dropping fast so PS3 should try to do the same.

well becuase in an ideal world, i would like it to be free :D

im not saying that reduce it to an unreasonable amount like £150 or something, but why would one WANT to spend more on something if it can be reduced?

I already paid top dollar for mine due to my own lack of patience. It is good to see the overall cost going down though. Good move for Sony.

Sometimes a second chance is just the opportunity to kill something thats already injured.

The prices will have to come down, nobody can afford to be buying new consoles, or pc's or anything at the moment.

So it's not as if they are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, it's because they know people don't have the cash, or else aren't willing to spend it at the moment.

Pyrite you need to go to Best Buy or any other electronic store and see if what you said is true. (even Wal-mart)

You buy a car off the lot brand new, drive half a mile and try to return it. You have lost money already b/c they will not give you what you just paid for it not to mention it was marked up anyway. Same with cds, dvd, video games. May not cost as much to make but they sell for a lot b/c everyone is trying to get paid or make a gain somehow.
