MPA wants London a ‘Fake-Free Zone’ before Olympics

Expected to be the largest anti-piracy campaign ever, the MPA and other anti-piracy groups have vowed to make London a “a fake-free zone” by the beginning of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The clearly impossible goal to completely eradicate DVD piracy was initiated by Intellectual Property Minister David Lammy.



The groups involved are The Motion Picture Association, U.K. Film Council, UK Intellectual Property Office, Federation Against Copyright Theft, London Councils, Trading Standards and the Police.

Lammy added, “Legislation alone will not combat counterfeiting and piracy. Good law is great but enforced law is better.” He noted that the campaign should send a strong message to citizens that piracy is a huge problem and will be tackled.

  What about the problems of war,starving children and people,homeless,bad world economy,global climate change,terrorist...come on huge is not the word for this..way to over react..more like you guys cant handle losing that 1 million you need to add to your other 100million dollar accounts...why not fixs the other problems that are actually HUGE..

  It shouldn't be too much of an operation to prevent piracy during the Olympics in 2012- let's look at the details....
  
  I mean all we are talking about is a city whose population will only slightly increase from 7.5 million to 16 million ( during the Olympics )- supported by the fantastic and ultra cheap London Undergroundf system to whisk them from venue to venue.
  
  The 50,000 extra police officers they will need to mount this anti-piracy operation in the estimated 5 - 6,000 street markets, car boot sales, vendor street stands etc will be easy to find - during the Olympics, the police will have absolutely nothing to do and will be at a loss for things to occupy their time with only 16 million inside the city.
  
  As for online piracy - he can simply take the chinese lead and deny its entire internet population access to the web for the duration of the Olympics.
  
  Yes, David Lamey has obviously once again thought this through very carefully and I applaud him for his moral decency and fine outstanding work on behalf of his quest for further self publication and ego boosting.

  The question is who determines what laws are good? Even "good" laws can backfire when the only way to enforce said laws is to violate personal liberties, rights, ect...

  How exactly is piracy a huge problem to the average person? It really doesn't even affect the corporation’s bottom line at current levels.
  
  On a further note how exactly is piracy linked to the 2012 olypmpics? How will piracy have a negative impact on people’s view of london? I now have more questions than answers... I’m never going to get the answers to those questions because there aren’t any meaning this entire anti-piracy campaign is Bull$#!%!!!

  Boy you Brits are gonna loves this. How much financial outlay have they allocated. Are they going to take more in taxes or charge a fee for every legit DVD-CD sold. All this while the world's crashing into a depression and by that time oil will be $150 a barrel again. Something for which to look forward. The Dollar will have no value and the Euro slightly better. And all the world's car manufacturers will be bankrupt. The subway should be fun. JM2C Sweet!!
