Samsung to introduce solar-powered mobile phone

Samsung to introduce solar-powered mobile phone
The global phone maker Samsung is set to introduce its brand new Blue Earth solar-powered mobile phone today at the Mobile World Congress event in Spain.

The phone is made out of recycled water bottles, prominently features a pedometer and includes software that reminds you how "green" the phone is.

The solar panels are on the back on the handset and the front is a full touchscreen interface. There is no word on pricing or availability as of yet, but we will update the article when more details become available.

This is a nice step in the right direction for handset makers.

That looks awsome, I want one. I hope the battery has a good life on a single charge, I would have to get used to sitting my phone upside down.

    hmm.. i'm not sure..

So is the solar panels going to be the Primary and only source of power?

and it kinda seems unpractical.. since our phones usually dont see the sun, and are always in our pockets etc. so in order to charge this monster you'd have to put it outside.. or hold it in your hand, making it a target for theft.

but, i dont think samsung would be stupid enough to make solar power the only power source, so we could be fine.
but nice idea none the less.

Yeah, because we all know that the minscule power usage of Cell-phones is a significant cause of global warming.

Basically, you get to pay more to feel like you are "doing something.
    Kind of like Hybrid cars.

Exactly. Lets see how many celebrities jump on this bandwagon.

I'm no scientist... but I would be willing to bet that the amount of CO2 expelled while TALKING on a cell-phone comes close to or is more than the amount of CO2 generated from cell-phone itself.
So maybe we should just be telling everyone to just shut up???

All sarcasm asside, I think it's a cool idea. I could place the phone on my desk and it would trickle charge while it's not being used... Should help extend battery life significantly.
For that reason, it's cool... but save the planet??? Puleeeeze

I like the idea of self-charging in general.... My phone is always dead when I need it >:(

They should also make it waterproof. That way, you can call somebody if you are stranded in some island like in Cast Away...

But wait, there won't be any signal though, but at least you would use it to play games instead of making a ball your friend.

dont most solar panels heat up fast meaning temperatures with that phone may be hot and leaving my phone in the sun should make it pretty hot as well.....just a thought

If it was in chrome... it might be cooler (wouldn't heat up).

I guess the motive deserves a thumbs up, but if you keep your phone in your pocket? and the lack of quality sun here in the UK.A bit of a gimmick I think.
