'Redesigned' PS3 coming soon?

'Redesigned' PS3 coming soon?
Although this is rumor for the time being, a PlayStation Lifestyle article is stating that Sony will introduce a newly 'redesigned' PlayStation 3 at the upcoming E3 event, alongside the imminent release of the PSP Go! updated handheld.

There were no other specifics posted, but PSL posts a few possibilities including the fact that the redesign may just be new colors, such as white or silver to match current peripherals available.

Another interesting option is that the upcoming console will be a 'PS3 Slim,' adding some small updates such as Bluetooth 3.0. The console would also be lighter, and more streamlined, somewhat like the PS2 Slim models and the updated PSP models.

We will keep you updated on any developments.

why would they ever release another ps3 now the originals still aren't selling great it's a recession, it's only been a couple years since the release and the worst reason i would have to buy a new one

...Plus a "slim" unit will use less power, make less heat, and be cheaper for the customer...this leaves money for people to buy games (where the money is made).

This would be a real smart idea for Sony if they want some more market... Not only is the buyer getting something fresh and new, but at a lower cost too. Then there are the people that already have a PS3 but just have to have the latest redesign because it's new and cool and stuff... Why?

This is great...but it seems that the main issue holding the PS3 back is the outrageous price. A hardware upgrade isn't a bad thing, though.

if its anything like the slimline PS2 i wouldn't touch it if it was the last gaming console on the world.

they don't need a new product line what they need is a reduction in current console price and more RPG's.

its been awhile since a decent rpg was released, if they did release a decent rpg id probably piss myself in excitement.

FF13 is going to be Pretty Sparkling Garbage, you can tell by the trailers.

If the redesigned PS3 is cheaper, slimmer and less energy-consuming, with added Blutooth 3.0, I might even consider buying a second one to go with my PS3 60GB SKU (the original released one, with the Emotion Engine chip installed).

The PS3 has become my main multimedia hub to the point that it's the only console I'm still playing games on and it's the only player I use to watch upscaled DVD's, Blu-ray and digital media, as well as my default photo-viewer on my HDTV. A second one wouldn't hurt to put in another room perhaps ...

They will probably announce it during E3, drop the price on the current models and then release the Slim around the Holiday season (probably also add a bundle with GT5 for killer sales). There are A LOT of things going on for Sony this year and from all the info I have, E3 will be an eye opener say the least.

Here are some supposed pics ~ http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/17964.cfm

IF they are real it's still to be confirmed.

It'll be interesting to see where Sony get the space from as the PS3 is mainly cooling and you don't want to cut back on that. An external PSU would be a bad idea as the current internal one gets stupidly hot and Sony are particullaly poor at making them (PS2 recall, VAIO ones are appalling). A smaller Blu-ray drive would push prices through the roof, as would a smaller HDD.

Why do obscure sites always get the first photos?

:-( nice way of reminding me of my failings in my German speaking test earlier (maybe I should of spent more time revising and less on AfterDawn)

Actually the main site that posted them was a Chinese site named LevelUp but has since removed the pics so I linked to a German site that still had them...here's another, plus it looks to have been partially confirmed as real (from an insider in the know). But an earlier version of something that is much improved over what has been leaked so far. We'll see though...

Man i could care less what the new PS3 looks like. The main issue is the price drop that would come with the newer unit. I really want to get a PS3 but i dont have a good reason as of now with the Xbox360 having cheaper price and great games. I hope this slim PS3 is for real b/c i have 2 cousins both overseas in service who i would love to play against.

This pretty standard updates the only thing that take my attention would be the blutooth that it would come with it. I would love to have that in the ps3 i have.

Well if they did make a redesigned "slim" model, i don't think it would be very good at all. For one thing I don't think they would be able to retain all the hardware in a smaller unit, bluetooth, wireless, large harddrive. I think some of those features will either be removed or limited and the slim model wouldn't be as powerful as the originals either. Then again I could be wrong, I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I don't know why they bother.. yeah a few desperate for every new gadget people will buy them but as they stand looking at the few leaked pics.. who wants to spend that amount of money to talk to their phone when their pc does it either as standard or with an add on £10 dongle?

I said this before.. IF they were to decide it is actually a media center which just happens to have the capability to play a few games they should make it in a standard hi-fi case format so it can be stacked up with the rest of peoples gear.. normal 19" rackmount cases have ben standard for dvd players and vhs machines and everything else people use for entertainment for years. Do that and they might well have a winner.. carry on with the top loading and the separate psu and the stupid curvy fits with nothing else styling and design and they have a loser.

I guess the console makers still have a very long way to go in the design stakes. The audio people worked out years ago that to sell hardware it neds to fit in a domestic environment with other equipment.. offer it in a flat front loading box in black and silver with everything on the front and back.. so easy to do. but the console people don't get it.

FYI .. it's SHE and HER .. those are the correct pronouns to use ;)

I will agree to that if they are going to want a full service media device then they should get together and create a hardware forum and make universal hardware, get a cut of the licensing nonsence from both software and hardware then focus on more software.

The only trouble is the console makers main profit is from hardware sale but they have to spend alot of money on R&D they have not hit the trade off point like radio has though.

In the US the main 3-6 corporations have bought up all the radio stations and fired 80% of the staff setup a statilite repeating station on the tower to run their favorite music and bland nationalized talk 24/7 at first they made millions but now everyone has run from radio because its so antiseptic and predictable and with corperat flipping the bill to miantian all those stations they are loseing money.

They should have left things independent and paid them to run their songs in some numerical average an hour(100 songs 1 will play every 10 minutes) doing it like that they can charge 10X more for the licensing and between them paying to have their music played that with the advertisers who they are partners of or own paying for their stuff to be put on air you have a situation where the local indapendalty owned stations will stay in money because so much of it is flowing freely.

Ah modern gaming its like modern film only the watering down of fiction and characters is replaced with shallow and watered down mechanics, gimmicks and shiny-er "people".
